I just caught a brief snippet of the show last night. The subject of John Calipari came up for some reason. Klatt is asked whether he would trust Calipari or Hawkins, he said Calipari.

Klatt then went off on Hawk with the whole "pavement cracking" stuff and started making fun of all the ridiculous "hawkisms" that we seem to be getting in steady doses lately. It's clear that Klatt has absolutely zero tolerance for Dan Hawkins at this juncture.

I caught this too. Both Klatt and Kreckman were talking in Hawk's nasally accent and quoting his colloquialisms, while ripping him. They also kept playing his "this is Division I football, this is the Big XII" clip intermittenly throughout the discussion.

The writing is on the wall for Hawk. I wonder if even winning will save him now. He has worn out his welcome and keeps throwing wood on the fire.

I got no problem with this. I Hawk can't take the heat, he needs to get out of the kitchen.

First off, winning cures all ills.

Secondly, I'm getting tired of people for criticizing hawk for saying nothing or saying positive things. When he was 'dodging the media' folks were ripping him. Now, he's back in public and people are ripping him. He's not going to come out and say that we suck and probably won't get to 500 this year, nor should he.

I dont have a problem with it either, just saying I think his routine is tired to everyone. Winning usually cures problems, in this case, Im not so sure that it will.

Winning is all that fans care about, if Hawk wins his little sayings are funny/quirky - when he loses they're annoying as sh**.

They didn't fire him after a 3-9 season, so I don't think they'd fire him after a winning campaign which is why the thought of a 6-6 season scares the hell out of me.

Quite true. Which underscores the magnitude of the stupidity of keeping Hawk. The fan base, mostly, has lost faith in Hawk. There is pretty much nothing that can be done to correct that. Years of winning mught get Hawk restored credibility, but that would only be offset by people being pissed and potentially not supporting during that same time frame. For instance, if Hawk, by some miracle, wins 8 this year, I will be thrilled. I'll still want somebody else because his record as a whole will still suck and he lost me after ISU in '09.

The admin effed this up big time. The ONLY move that made sense was starting over. The current difficulty is just a product of that monumentally bad decision to keep Hawk.

I think the biggest problem was letting it leak that Hawk was going to be fired and then going back on that at the last instant. If they had just said that he was going to get another year from the start, people would have been upset, but it would not have been nearly this bad.

Disagree in this instance. These tour stops are specifically designed to engage fans. Is it too much to ask that Dan Hawkins prepares something different to say than a worn out breaking concrete cliche? I know he is not about to win over fans at these tour stops, but he can at least engage us a little bit.

I dunno. It may not have been quite as bad, but I really wasn't hearing any Hawk is a goner stuff until after most everyone I know wanted him gone. If there had not been a leak, maybe a few people would be less riled up, but in the end, I don't think it would have made that much different. By the end of '09, Hawk had lost Buff Nation.

So do you suggest that he should say to engage the fans?

I think Talkins should make a tour stop at Sackys tailgate before one of CU's home games this year.

IMO, there is really nothing Hawk can say. He has alienated too many by losing, and by being a PR nightmare. If he were able to say, "Hey, we have got to get better. 3-9 will not cut it at CU and that is my fault. I and my staff are burning it at both ends and we will get better", that MAY buy him some goodwill. Hawk cannot do that because that would be "negative". I've said it before, Hawk IMO is a hard core PMA'er, and will never say anything he percieves as negative, because to him, that is as good as giving up. That is why you get the never ending stream of bad Tony Robbins knock offs masquerading as interview responses.

How about just speaking without using cliches or citing something he read in a book? Originality still counts for something in my book. The guy loves to talk and yet can't find something from a team of 80+ scholarship players and a coaching staff of 8-10 men that fans might find interesting and has never been aired in public? Maybe I am expecting too much here.

3-9 pretty well says we suck all by itself.

This is what I would have liked to hear:

"2009 was not a successful season. Our performance from top to bottom was not where we expect it to be, and we are committed to meeting the expectations our fans and we as coaches have for our team.

There are a lot of things this team and our coaches need to do better in order to have a successful season, some of the biggest issues which will be priorities for us this fall include:

    1. Consistent QB play
    2. Improved O-line play
    3. Committing fewer penalties than our opponents in every game.
    4. All special team units ranking in the top half of our league.
    5. 100% FG from inside 35 yds.
    6. 75% FG from beyond 35 yds.
    7. Ensuring all players on offense have complete grasp of the offense.
    8. Committment to running the ball even when we're trailing.
    9. Being in top half of our league in defensive sacks.
    10. Positive turnover margin in every game.
    11. Give up fewer than 10 plays of 30+ yards this season.
    12. Be focused and ready to play at full effort from the minute we step onto the field (practices included).

Of course ther are other important goals, but these are the things we are most focused on accomplishing this fall, and if we are successful in improving in these areas I have no doubt we will be a bowl team this year and will be in contention for the North.

Me and the entire coaching staff are fired up for this season and are doing everything we can to field a team that will make this University proud and we are all united in this goal. We appreciate the support of all our fans and are determines to see to it that your devotion and support will be rewarded. Go Buffs!"

    Or something like that.

While that's a reasonable response, I think that it is worth noting that Hawk is vilified for stating goals publicly.

he got ripped on the 10 wins thing because of 3-9 and ****ty coaching. i guarantee that he would not have caught flak if he had gone 8-4 or 9-3

He was vilified because he brought up 10 wins after a season that was sub standard and this after never having a winning season yet. I'd still like to hear him admit that he and his staff diddn't get the job done and they need to do better. Why can't he show some humility for once?

My problem with Hawk is that he's never acknowledged the weaknesses we can all see in his team. He has a massive offensive line and a stable of running backs, but he can't run the ball? His special teams have been abhorrent since he's gotten here. There are penalties, dropped balls, missed assignments, lackluster effort, poor playcalling and flat out horrible scouting/filmwork. It's like they go out every week and have no idea what the other team is going to do. I've never, not once, heard Hawkins address or take any blame for any of these issues. It's all 'we got to work on the little things' and 'we're almost there' and 'it's going to pop'. How much bullsh!t are we supposed to take from this guy?

I don't even care so much about Hawk "taking blame" because it seems he honestly believes he is doing what needs to be done to produce a winner - if that's the case, fine then the only thing we should really care about is winning.

He doesn't need to set some lofty win total as a goal (which has already backfired) - what I want him to do is say "we need to be better at X, Y, and Z - if we are successful improving in those areas we will win most of our games, if we don't we won't and this season will not be successful."

Kudos to Klatt for ripping Hawkins...Hawk really has an ego problem...I thought Hawk was one that would take accountbility for the team's losses and that was coming off of the Barnett regime where Barnett acted the same way after losses?

It seems clear to me that hawk also has a bit of personal agenda... He put that agenda above what was best for the team, the University, and ultimately snubbed alumni and fans when we demanded change. This became obvious with the asinine QB "controversy".

Hawkins deserves pretty much everything he gets, IMHO... but snarky antics like mimicking his voice seem pretty infantile to me. Talk about lack of class and originality... My eight-year-old daughter doesn't even do that crap anymore.
