Kipp Clocks Season-Best Time to Advance To Worlds

MONACO, France — Shalaya Kipp was good in June, but she needed to be better in July – and she was.

The University of Colorado senior placed third in last month’s 3,000-meter steeplechase at the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships, earning a spot on the U.S. roster for the IAAF World Championships in Athletics this summer.

But Kipp finished the race in 9:46.83, not the ‘A’ standard of 9:43.00 needed to automatically advance. In order to solidify her spot on the team she had to run under 9:43 before July 20.

It came down to the wire, but Kipp did just that on Friday, with one day to spare. She finished fourth overall at the IAAF Diamond League meet in Monaco, clocking a season-best 9:37.23 and having over six seconds to spare in achieving her required time. She also was the top American in Friday’s race.
