Lawrence Phillips sentence to ten years in prison ...

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3624420

Seems like just yesterday when he was pushing his girlfriend down the stairs in Lincoln. And Tom Osborne suspended him for something like two non-conference games ...... (somebody check me on that).

Well, 10 years just might have become life.

Dr. Tom can't get him out of this one, even if he had a game on Saturday.

But if it happened in Nebraska he would probably try under those circumstances.

In related news, NU has found a loophole in NCAA rules and has declared Phillips eligible to play one more year in Lincoln.

I assume his cell mate disrespected him. Or maybe he just didn't pick up after himself.

Maybe you weren't paying attention. The corn aren't being criticized because a former player turned out to be an awful human being. They're being criticized because they knew a (then) current player was an awful human being but decided he needed to play football anyway.

I get that. Hey, I hate 'Braska as much as anyone and believe that the actions of Phillips and Osborne were reprehensible. But to sit here and act like CU has been nothing but choir boys and that Rae Carruth's violence toward women began the moment he left campus, it seems a bit disingenuous to me.

This was the same Dr. Tom Osborne that Nebraska voters by a large margin sent to congress.

Every program has some bad apples. It would be fair to say that if you selected a random 100+ young men from any university campus in the country and track them over 4-5 years you are going to have incidents like fights, public drunkenness etc. You are probably going to have some incidents stemming from emotional events involving young women. You will have some thefts, some academic cheating, etc. It doesn't matter if the young men are athletes, band members, or sci-fi geeks.

This comes naturally as you have young men away from home for the first time in an environment that has limited control over their behavior. It's a part of the process of growing up.

Is the incidence rate higher among athletes? Probably somewhat. You have more guys who come from broken families or from families that don't have college history and who don't know how to support and prepare them to handle the college temptations. You do also have some guys who have gotten away with things because they were the big time athlete on their HS campus and got some favorable treatment.

Coach McCartney didn't recruit a bunch of choir boys (who also can get in trouble at college) and yes he did help some of them through rough spots but I feel comfortable in saying that the culture at CU never got close to what Nebraska had for a much longer period and still has with their worship of the fusker football team.

Even in the championship years there has always been an anti-athletic element in Boulder that made sure that certain transgressions made the media when involving CU athletes. In Lincoln both these critics and the media have been effectively squashed by the tidal wave that is Cornhusker fans.

The guy was a tremendous talent. His life was and is a terrible waste. I hope he gets it together.

We can all see why Osborne took a risk on him. I could see McCartney taking a risk on him like he did on some others. Hoping to guide him away from the bad things he did and had done to him. Hoping that football would keep him in line. He created a lot of headaches for Osborne.

    Sad story.

My response exactly. We're not talking about some 22 year-old. This is a forty-something who may have just murdered his cell-mate.

I hope he gets it together as well but if this is true it will only be a matter of how he serves out the rest of his life.

He is going to be 40 in less than a month. He is already a muti-time convicted felon. Reasonable to assume that he gets at least another 20-25 years added on means that even with good time he will be in his mid-50's when he gets out with no marketable skills. If he spends another 25 years that would put him in his 60's.

Talk about a guy who had every chance and burned them all away.

I can think of multiple reasons why killing your cell mate in prison may be your best option of survival at any given time, even if the long term repercussions mean you spend the rest of your life there.

I suspect that few of us can truly relate to prison life.

I realize the NU hate is strong here, but I'll reserve judgement until more info comes out.

The dude is a mess that seemingly can't control himself when he gets angry. I hope that he can overcome that.

I feel mostly sorry for the victims of his violent actions.

None of this has anything to do with NU and it is lame to gloat on this as some kind of reflection on that program or their fans.

I still hate NU and always will. Hoping against all odds that the next time we play them, we stomp their assses.

I have zero pity for him. I don't care if he "gets it together" or not. He's human garbage, and I try to spend as little time as possible concerning myself with people like that.

Didn't want you to feel left out.

This guy has been trouble his entire adult life, is serving a 31 year sentence, and just killed his cellmate. What makes anyone think he wants to change, let alone can?

That's because few of us are dumb enough to commit crimes that will land them in prison. LP is even dumber because he had the opportunity of a lifetime to become a very rich and very successful professional athlete. He is dealing with the consequences of his actions. He earned his prison life.

And Phillips had every opportunity to avoid it.

You can talk about his background and other factors but he also had a chance to get a paid for education, he had an NFL signing bonus, he had coaches that tried to keep him out of trouble. His choices are what put him where he is and will be.

Wish there was a way to keep these things from happening but I feel a lot more for the people who didn't have his opportunities.
