Pretty disappointed with this group's play this season. They were invisible on Saturday night. We have to be better in this area next year. I think Jeff Smart has done an admirable job, but he just is not cutting it as a starter right now. He was blown up about 4-5 different times against Okie State. One guy that continues to impress me is BJ Beatty. We need to get him on the field more. Hoping next year that at least one of the three redshirt freshmen are ready to make a big impact right away. We need an infusion of speed.

I agree completely. This team is set up for the linebackers to play large, and they haven't. Maybe we were too quick to believe the hype about Sipili, but I remember talking to one of the coaches at the kickoff luncheon last year who said that Sipili was a monster. He's been very un-monster like thus far. :sad1:

Back problems are a bitch. I am more concerned about why Burton is trying to bulk up to DT status.

We need to get Sipili healthy. His size would be a welcome addition to the LB corps. I don't know what the answer is at the LB position, but something needs to change. Even Mohler is missing routine plays right now.

I thought that Mohler played a pretty good game, especially the first half. Smart is just to slow and for some reason this year can't shed a block. Sip just falls into the injury bug category that has struck this team. Couldn't agree more at Beatty, the kids has put in some hard work and its paying off. We will get some speed next year with Kotoa, Rippy, some aggressiveness with Major. Lets see what Cabral can do with some talent back there.

Smart isn't any slower than last year, he doesn't have the best LB in the country taking all of the blocking attention. I like Jeff, but have come to the conclusion that he greatly benefited playing next to Dizon.

I don't think the LB's have been that bad. Compared to last year they are down but overall I think Jones, Moehler and Beatty (on run plays) have done better than average. I like Smart a lot but it's unfortunate that he's about a step slow for what his position calls for.

I also think the D is better overall than last year. The O is worse than last year but the D has kept the games reasonable (except one). The group that has really stepped up and made the difference this year is the secondary. In years past I used to cringe on every pass play because our corners couldn't hang with WRs and we all used to bitch about the 10+ yard cushin they gave. This season I see them in the WR's faces, getting physical, breaking up a lot of passes and making a lot of plays on screens and wide run plays. These guys are all young too and will be monsters in 2010.

one thing I've noticed this year is that the lb's are being asked to cover wr's more. They seem to be fine against the run but it's hard to look good trying to hang with wideouts. But I still like the way the next few years look. Does anybody doubt that rippy and major and katoa are going to get coached into stars by cabral?

I think Beatty, Jones and Mohler have played well together. Not quite to the level I expected/hoped for, but certainly not a bad unit. I really like Beatty's fire. That kid needs to stay on the field.

Not having any D line is killing the LB play. Run plays blockers are getting into the LB's, and pass plays the LB's are needing to cover guys way to long.

The D in general is missing that "one guy" that always seems to make plays when you need them.

Dizon was always good for a few huge plays a game, forcing punts, fumbles or whatever. Years past we always had a CB or S step up for the big INT when needed. I don't remember the last big time sack the D line had, but I think it might have been Tyler Brayton in 2002.

This years team never seems to be ablet to get off the field. We always seem to give up 5 to 6 3rd and long conversions a game.

Jon Major will crush the hopes and dreams of no fewer than 14 opposing running backs next season, bank on it.

Smart has been out of position on several up-the-gut plays that led to touchdowns. There haven't been enough picks nor big hits to mobile QBs. I kept hoping to see mobile QB's like McCoy, Reesing, Freeman, Robinson or White get blown up. But mostly they were able to fall forward for a couple extra yards. It would be cool to put the fear in a few mobile QB's and start seeing them slide feet first, or risk showing up on Youtube under 'Jacked Up'.

But the D secondary is more reliable than the DL, ST and O in every game outside of Mizzou.

Mohler has been pretty strong but he seems to have problems shedding the blocks on running plays sometimes. Smart is either good or bad. Jones never plays at LB anymore - ever. Beatty has looked real good. Sipili - not seen in awhile and needs to "focus". Burton plays on goal-line D where his 6'0" 260 body can be of use?

We return this whole crew next year and I'm betting there will be battles at every position throughout the year. Can Burton get in shape? Beatty continue to improve? Sipili come back to what we expected? Katoa? Major? Rippy? Hartigan?
Tyler Ahles has seen some playing time as a RS-Freshmen. He had a huge hit in the EWU game (I think it was that game)that kept them from getting a first down and had to punt in the fourth quarter.

It will be a good competition and should be a stronger group next year for sure.

Will a guy like Major get big enough to move to the line? How tall is he?
