That hit was unquestionably a personal foul.

That being said, it was really nice to see some attitude and pissed off play. If that WR was matched up with Mahnke again I would be willing to bet that hit would cross his mind before catching the ball again. That's the sort of stuff that leads to drops, fumbles, etc.
 
If the ball is overthrown over the middle a linebacker will still put a lick on the receiver, and as long as the ball was around the receiver at the time of the hit it wouldnt be called. The same rules apply on the Mankhe hit. I rewatched the hit numerous times and he timed it very well.

He was committed to making the hit as the ball got there. He probably didn't know it was overthrown and even then, it's too late to stop. You see the ball thrown, you find the receiver and you make the hit. It was close, but I'll take aggressive play any day - and so would Bo Pelini! Big time player the last two games and it's what we need.
