so, those that read rivals and scout have heard this news before, but collins over at scout now has an article up... they are going to try kai at fullback in the spring. and, solder is going to try tackle.

wow. that is one BIG effing offensive unit if it works. our o-line will be massive. and, maiava would be a nasty, nasty mauler at fullback. if he can show some hands and if his footwork is good enough, he could be a scary freaking fullback.

what this all tells us? they are prepping for the arrival of d. scott. folks, if this works, we are going to run, run, run the ball.

    interesting experiment!

They must really like the guys they redshirted at OL. Maiava played well most of the time last year. He did get bullied versus AL in the bowl game, but a lot of OL would get bullied by that DL, not to mention a true frosh. I think you are right, Hawk intends to line up and knock some people backwards on O. Should be fun to watch. Nothin demoralizes an opponent more than success running right at them.

A 6-0, 295lbs fullback? Sounds like what Texas A&M has been doing.

Is this going to be an "experiment" or an actual position change? i.e. is he going to be flip-flopping between two different positions all spring? Or is he just going to be playing fullback. Time will tell, I suppose.

Guess they really liked those redshirted guys and decided Kai was to short...

this staff, as near as i can tell, wants size on the ol. maiava only goes 6 feet. he had a great year for a frosh... hell, he was a freshman all-america, i think. but, they want bigger guys upfront. the thing that impressed me most about kai was his downfield blocking. if you watch him, he is relentless. he searches guys out to destroy. and, he has very good speed for such a big guy. those qualities in a fullback could make him a special player.

and, imagine solder and miller at each tackle position. your tackles are over 6'7" and they have good feet. scary.

it looks to me like they are hoping they can take the game off the shoulders of the qb and put it on the running game. we've had some damn fine football teams when we have been able to do that successfully.

the thought of maiava destroying a linebacker as d-scott scoots thru behind him is pretty fun!

the collins article on scout says they are going to try him, full-time, at fb to start the spring and see how he does. ... no flip-flopping, at least at first, it sounds like.

I love it... Let's pound it out folks!!!

This would probably involve a lot of conditioning, footwork, etc... I'm sure he would not be 295 come fall if this were true, they are going to want to trim him down.

I am excited to see what this "uber" jumbo package does when they also take Little hawk out and go all "wild hog" old school single wing on some fools.

Did anyone else notice that Scott through a TD pass in his last HS game?:)

    :yeahthat:

The idea of taking probably our best returning OL, based on last year's play, off the OL scares me. Obviously the staff knows more about the kids coming out of their redshirt year than I do, and maybe we'll be fine. But I' d really rather see Kai getting more experience on the OL this spring, and look elsewhere for the monster FB.

But if it works, it could be a hell of a lot of fun to watch, I guess...

We have had trouble with fielding a quality starting o-line for a while now. Not to mention we have had major depth issues. I don't like seeing one of our best returning linemen changing positions.

13 Olineman reporting for spring ball with 3 or so more highly recruited guys coming in this summer.... We should have some depth now!

Kai was a Frosh AA. You don't just move those guys to new positions, but I have faith in the coaching staff.

CU has pudge Sanders and Ryan Miller returning next BTW. I'm not sure Maiava is better than those two.

I'm with you on this. If its not working out then he needs to go back to the OL pronto, but is worth a shot. One thing that really stuck out watching Maiava was his quickness, and like you say he gets downfield well. If he can be a Drumm typd of FB this offense is going to be sick!

With our depth at OL, I'm not worried. I think this could make our offense even better, which by the way will be one of the best in the Big 12 if not the country next year or two.

How do you figure that? Sanders had 8 games with 80% or better and three with 90% or better. Maiava had 3 and 2 respectively. Maiava had a single game grade higher than Sanders or Miller, but not overall when compared to Sanders. Miller, well I'll give you that one, but just barely as he had 4 games over 80%.

i good with it. this is what spring ball is for. try new things out and mess around some to see if it might work out.

my guess is that the coaching staff is comfortable that someone can step into Kia's shoes and perform just as well thus making them willing to try this idea out.

    we shall see... :gobuffs:

Yep, I think people are forgetting the talent and SIZE the staff has brought in at the position the last two years. We are golden on the line. And there were many times last year when Maiva got pushed around by more talented D-Lineman.

I think that it could be a great move, if it works. I have no doubt that if he was 4 inches taller, there wouldnt be talk of this.

I know Kai was a pretty damn awesome Frosh Guard, but I also remember him just destroying guys in the open field. He can always switch back if necessary.

With the way our OCoordinator likes his weird formations this could be right up their alley. Screw "Wild Hog" formation, how bout the "Buffalo Stampede" formation?

    Find Scott now suckas!

with maiava moved there are only two returning starters in girthy and ryan. devin head has experience but after that there is nothing. maiava was the nastiest of the bunch and they are going to miss that toughness and leadership. his blocking in open space was the best and that is a good reason to try him at full back. i know he'll kill people now that he has a running start at the LBs and DEs. i hear he has great hands and is down to 280 lbs already. still going to miss seeing him tear guys heads off on the line.

Hopefully he turns into the new age "Fridge" Perry, only with a nastier hawaiian attitude.

that's interesting about his hands. awesome.

you wouldn't want to be an undersized lb meeting a guy like that in the hole, that's for dang sure.

Can you say bowling ball? I foresee a lot of 220ish LB's getting felled like old growth redwoods at a lumberjack festival.:smile2:

Wow. Im sorry you were not impressed with the freshmans hand skills and footwork. Maybe you missed the OU game where he man handled their nose tackle pretty effectively in the 4th quarter.
