| BOULDER - University of Colorado combined events and jumps coach Lindsey Malone is pleased to announce the signing of two standout preps to National Letters of Intent to continue their education and compete for CU's track and field program. Donya' Green II (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Mariah Slack (Oceanside, Calif.) will join Malone's group this coming fall and both bring a lot of talent to the table. Green, a relative newcomer to the sport, started high jumping not even one year ago in March of 2012. The Vista Ridge High School senior qualified for the Colorado State High School 4A Championships in that first season and placed 10[SUP]th[/SUP] overall as a junior. Already this season, he has been breaking records. At the USATF Indoor All-Comers meet, Green placed first in the high jump after clearing 6-7, which broke the meet record. After that meet, he competed at the Colorado MLK Mile-Hi Classic and again placed first with another meet record at 6-8. Green currently ranks seventh nationally in the high jump. Prior to high jumping, Green played basketball and football at VRHS. The football team had been in the playoffs the last three straight years. "I am greatly looking forward to working with DJ in the high jump," Malone said. "He has made incredible improvements over the past nine months and I think he is just getting started. His personality and demeanor are a perfect fit to our program. DJ is one of our instate all-stars I couldn't be happier that he chose the University of Colorado to pursue his athletic and academic endeavors. We are tremendously excited for DJ's future at CU." A standout at Vista High School in Oceanside, Calif., Slack has been a member of the varsity track and field team since her freshman season (2010) when she was named the VHS Rookie of the Year, as well as All-North County Conference, All-San Diego Section, All-CIF, the San Diego Section CIF Champion and a state qualifier in the high jump. Slack also competed in the 4x400-meter relay that qualified for the state championships. As a sophomore she saw more success and was named the VHS Outstanding Field Athlete, Avocado East League Champion, all-league, all-conference, All-CIF, the San Diego Section runner-up and a state qualifier in the high jump. Slack's junior season saw her winning the Avocado East League in the high jump as well as the 800-meter run. She earned all-league honors for the high jump, 800 and the 4x400 and was again all-conference, all-CIF and the San Diego Section runner-up in the high jump. Slack was also honored as the team's MVP last season. Her high school personal bests prior to the 2013 season include: 26.34 in the 200, 58.99 in the 400, 2:18.04 in the 800, 16-09.25 in the long jump and 5-6 in the high jump. Slack also competed in soccer and cross country at VHS. She was named the cross country team's rookie of the year in 2009 and earned the "Tough as Nails" award in 2010. On the soccer pitch, she was named all-league (2011-12), all-conference (2012) and the VHS Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year (2012). Academically Slack has been named to the principal's honor roll and has been a scholar-athlete (2009-12) and earned San Diego Union Tribune All-Academic Team honors for cross country, soccer and track in 2012. "I am absolutely thrilled to welcome Mariah to the Buffalo family," Malone said. "She exemplifies the characteristics and dedication that we are looking for in our student-athletes. Mariah has balanced participating in three sports in high school while earning a 4.4 GPA including honors courses. She is determined, dedicated, and incredibly delightful. Mariah is the perfect fit for our combined events program and will make an immediate impact on our team. I am tremendously excited for her future as a Buffalo." |
