Isn't Bill Mccartney's son coaching at one of the Boulder high schools?

What is his specialty? Is he an offensive minded coach? Or defense?

Assuming for the sake of argument that McCartney does come back to coach on an interim basis - I wonder if there is any draw to the idea of bringing McCartney Jr up to be an assistant coach.

It would have been nice to have a certain coaches son on our side on Saturday.

Tell that to people in Nebraska! But that would ruin their sex life.

I read somewhere that if Coach Mac comes back then his son will be an assistant in some capacity.....
that's part of the alure of the gig.... being able to spend his 'golden years' along side his son.

To answer your question, he's been the coach at Fairview since at least 1995, but I think a couple years before that. While I don't follow the team very closely, he's done a good job of keeping the team competitive each year and adapting to the strengths and weaknesses that each class of kids presents. Some years they run a power run game while other years they'll run something closer to a spread option. They're usually pretty good on defense as well.

Does that mean he should be on staff at CU? Probably not.

Tom McCartney has been the head coach at Fairview for the better part of 15 years now. He's done a decent job. They run an option -type offense there, with heavy emphasis on execution at the line of scrimmage. They will often line up with three backs and will use two of them to lead block. It's a pretty unimaginitive offense, but it works at this level. His defenses are usually good, but not outstanding.

If he were to come to CU, I think he'd make a decent RB coach or O-Line coach. I can't remember what he played in HS. Probably linebacker. I remember he was a better baseball player than football.

Little Mac's got good coaching genes, but don't we already have a high school coach (and a poor one, at that) running the show?

I could live with that combination as long as his son was nothing more than the water/towel boy

It's not uncommon for high school coaches to be hired as position coaches. Barnett came to CU from that avenue.

I believe Tom was a assistant back in the early nineties. Kind of like a grad assistant. I may be mistaken though.

Tom has done a decent job at Fairview, but nothing amazing enough to see him making the jump to college ball. jmo.

    Fair enough.

But I do think the potential of a father coaching with his son is one reason why McCartney might be interested in the job.

You never really know. I'm pretty sure there have been successful coaches out there who came out of nowhere.

Didn't Josh McDaniels come from from John Carrol U. to the QB's coach of the Pats in less than what? 6 years?

Actually now that I think of it, family in coaching might not be so bad. Oklahoma was it's best under Stoops when he had all his brothers there, The Bowdens, the Pelinis etc.

If we're going to get a HS coach to coach up at CU, I'd take Andy Lowry from Columbine before anybody else. There's a guy who has coaching skills.
