First of all, recognize that the jack-offs on the afternoon show are all mega- homeslices (ie, love everything Texas - Cowboys, UT, Baylor, etc). Mel Kiper was this afternoon's interview. When asked about the surprise Big 12 team for this year, Mel chose the Buffs. He rationalized an 8 win season, and mentioned Solder, Miller, Scotty, Jimmy, and Speedy as being some of the best players at their positions in the conference.

Mel's comments were met with pure disbelief by these dooshes ("Colo-frickin-rado? Are you kidding me?") I was laughing my ass off...Thanks, Mel!

Phil Steele is another well respected person that has picked the buffs to have a surprise year. Yet, when someone like me says it, I get made fun of.

Does an 8 win season really make the Buffs a "surprise" team.

Personally, I will be surprised with 8 wins, so perhaps it does.

Based on last year's record, the fact that numb nuts is still our coach, and most "experts" are predicting us to finish 5th in the North, I would say 8 wins is very surprising...

    Under Hawkins, yes it is.

Kiper knows his stuff so he could be on to something.

So, Kiper "could be on to something" but DBT is an idot? OK, I see where this is going. Let me ask you something. If I had Big Hair like the Kipster, would I be on to something then?

No, I agree. Kiper, for all his douchiness is a pretty good evaluator. I like that he thinks we have some guys that are the best in the conference at their positions. But he left out Hansen. I'm not saying he's the best, but I think he has a chance to surprise some folks.

Kiper always makes his CFB predictions based upon how many pro prospects he thinks the program has.

I think we win 8 this year, and shock the world once or twice (Georgia and Oklahoma, I'm looking at you)

I really wouldn't be that surprised by 8 wins (after all, that's what I picked in the poll we recently had... :smile2:). I say this for a number of reasons - the experience on the OL; the newcomers at WR; Jefferson and Simmons getting a full spring and camp under their belt; experience and talent at DB; the return of Kasa; Major coming off a season slowed by injuries, the running dimension that Hansen brings to the QB position; and a schedule set up to win 8 games with 1 or 2 mild upsets combined with winning the games we should win. Now there's no doubt that winning the games we should win is not much of a guarantee based on the history of this team under Hawkins.

However, I firmly believe that if we were to win 8 games that it would be in spite of Hawkins' coaching, not because of it.

Not to pat myself on the back but I made the case for 8 wins in a thread in December.

Not to pat myself on the back, but in August of 2006 I picked 17 wins. Just 1 more to go, baby! :woot:

Agree. I sure do hope these guys predicting 8 wins are right, but I, like the majority of fans, am skeptical about winning any game while dumas$ is still the coach. I hope and pray the team somehow comes up with some wins despite the ineptitude of Hack and most of his staff. Guess we'll find out in 9 days.

o-line is the key. they need to create an attitude or identity because they did not play as a unit whatsoever last year. just ****ing smash some heads and have your mate's back.

i wouldn't expect much from simmons, can't explain it but while watching him this fall he just doesn't seem to have it.

I think everybody, especially the team, wanna give the nation a great big **** burger to eat. Why not? If those guys in that room believe and I mean believe, thats gonna be big. I hope they will. Ever since I moved from Texas, besides 2001, we have been either pretty good or terrible. Another season like last year and I might have to move back lol. I think these guys know whats up and will play pissed off. As long as they harness that, they will be fine.

Im sure they are, I hope they go out and play above their heads. If these guys play like we believe they can, I highly doubt 8 wins is their goal. We have a little more talent than the past few years, hopefully we will see it. Sept. 4th is a big step even if it is CSU. We need to kick the living dog**** outta them and get some momentum.

I can only hope with everything I have that Mel is right. This team has the talent to win and win big. If they can get on a roll they have the talent to play with anyone on the schedule.

My concern like most people here is the head coach. After losing to Montana State, Toledo, CSU, ISU, almost to Eastern Washington I have no faith in this coaching staffs ability to motivate and lead this team to the level needed to win games. Also in order to win 8 games this year that means we will have to win multiple games on the road. Considering that Hawk has managed to win a grand total of two road games his entire time at CU I find it hard to have confidence that that will happen either.

On the other hand, for the first time since Hawk has been here we seem to have real leadership from the players on the team, we have a group of vocal leaders who are committed to this team and also have the talent to back up their mouths on the field which goes a long way. In the past few years we have either had talented leaders like Jordan Dizon, Tyler Polumbus who could play but who came from the prior regiem and never seemed to buy Hawk and Co. or guys who bought Hawks stuff but lacked the talent to give credibility to their leadership. Now we have guys with both.

For the record, I have been as strong as anyone here in saying that Hawk should not have been brought back after last year's disaster. 3-9 in your fourth year at CU is not acceptable when you haven't had a winning season yet. At the same time I like Hawk as a person and wish him well. I don't believe that his record at Boise was an accident and I don't buy the idea that it was totally a result of the coaches before and after him, they won a lot of games and he was the man in charge, he gets credit for wins as much as he gets credit here for losing. I would not be surprised if the Buffs have a turnaround season andthe team truly starts to believe, with the talent we have returning, if we run off a series of big years. Hawk has proven he can coach from the top, he just hasn't proven that he can take a team to the top.

I think the fact that Kiper and Steele and others see the talent on the team (and no longer the "youth" excuse) this just puts all the more pressure on Hawk and Co. to perform. There should be absolutely NO debate that we have the talent to be and 8 win team.

Anything short of that is going to be on the coaches head, and rightfully so at this point.

I love the self-victimization here. I'm pretty sure that if you guys have been beaten up, it's not for simply saying "we could win 8 games this year." If you'll notice, there's lots of folks drinking the Kool Aid around these parts and getting excited for the season.

No, if you've been beaten up for saying we could win 8 games (and I'd be surprised if you have) then it's probably how you said it. Or maybe we're just a bunch of assholes around here.

I'm not sure how a rational person can look at this team and find 8 wins on the schedule, given what we've seen from the staff the last two years. I think it's easy to convince yourself that there is talent there, but having talent is one thing, seeing it perform is quite another thing. Hawk & Co have had ZERO success in turning potential into results.

We got to 6 wins with less talent, experience and depth in 2007. More importantly, we had a lot less ability to make explosive plays from WR, RB, QB, TE or our return game. Throw in that the Big 12 doesn't have any proven quarterbacks this year like it's had in years past (neither do any of our non-conference opponents). 8 wins is very realistic for this team.

This would make me excited if it didn't come from Mel Kiper. The guy is a joke. It's nice to get some love from ESPN though. I'm sure it was really hard for them to pull away from sucking all the usual ****s (UT, OU, OSU, Mich, Bama, Florida, USC, etc.) to talk about CU.

I hope we have a good season, but I'm hungover this morning. So go ***k yourself ESPN and Mel Kiper. We will win without your bull***t speak.

We need an ESPN for the mountain and west coast time zones. I'm sick and tired of hearing about all these midwest and least coast teams. Go away Kirk Herbstreet and that jack*** that does MNF now.

We got three wins with pretty much the exact same talent last year. We had a stable of four running backs and a massive offensive line and couldn't get more than 2.5 YPC. We gave up over 50 points to TOLEDO. We got bitch-slapped on our home field by a CSU team that couldn't even beat UNLV or San Diego State. We were two plays away from being 1-10. We were flat-out pathetic last year. We lost our best assistant coach in the offseason. We're horribly thin at RB and DB. Our WR corps consists of Scotty and a bunch of guys who have never played a down of football at CU.

AND DAN HAWKINS REMAINS THE HEAD COACH.

All reasons to suspect this team is headed for another entirely mediocre if not piss-poor season. You can spin it any way you want to. It's easy to look at this team and say all the things you just said. In the end, I've seen no evidence that this staff has what it takes to carve 8 wins out of this season.
