If I am remembering his post correctly from the BuffStampede board, Rivals' Will Whelan (YungCoach on here) said that he thinks there's only about a 20% chance we would miss on both Miller and Welsh.

Which guy is your preference? Why?

What would you do if the 20% "doomsday scenario" comes to pass? Maten? See who is available in the spring? Bank it?

Miller because we need a beast in the middle that will punish people down low that want to be physical (aka that ASU ponytail guy) since the refs allow so much contact in the Pac, and he already has the size and strength to compete from Day 1.

Welsh might be a better long-term project (hence higher star ranking), and it would be sweet to beat at Cal/UCLA for a big, but I don't see how he fits into Boyle's system, which demands that bigs run the court. He seems better fitted for a half court team. ALthough, I wouldn't complain if we landed him because he is a true 7 footer with skills.

If neither, I would go after a one-year rental/grad transfer or a JC guy.

I'd be happy with either one. Would prefer Welsh, as we have enough talent in our front court to let him develop (assuming Scott and Gordon don't leave early). Getting a legitimate 7 footer could be a game changer

If we miss on both, would prefer we just bank the scholarship unless there was a top transfer. But that's not Boyle's style. He will likely add someone.

Agree here, we need somebody who can push and shove with the wide bodies we will face.

I voted for Welsh. If I'd voted at another random moment my vote could have easily gone to Miller. It's that close for me.

I'd be shocked if either guy (barring injuries) didn't end up being a good college basketball player.

I see both helping the Buffs immediately for the 2014-15 season.

    What I like about Miller:

    • Wide body
    • Plays with aggression
    • Runs the court
    • Good relationship with Dom Collier
    • Ready to bang with seniors from day one

    What I like about Welsh:
    • Legit 7 footer with offensive skills (rare)
    • Solid frame
    • Good hands
    • Good timing
    • Late developer = tremendous upside

The reason I voted Welsh is because I'm in a gambling mood today. With Miller, it's likely that you securely chart your path to annual tourney appearances as an important piece to the puzzle to complement all those combos & wings in the 2013 class along with Dom in 2014. With Welsh, you may not move the needle with his performance in 2014-15 as a freshman but the upside is that he has CU competing for national championships because there are very few teams in college basketball that can overcome an elite 7 footer if he develops into that. I think you've got to roll the dice when those types of opportunities arise.

Also, as a Top 100 talent (Welsh) to go with our other Top 100 in Dom, CU would make quite a bit of national noise with a 2-person class that could potentially be ranked Top 25. That pub, plus beating Cal and UCLA for a LA recruit, really sets the Buffs up for a 2015 recruiting cycle with a boatload of talent out west and the Buffs on pretty much everyone's short list already.

If we miss on both, I have to say I don't know enough about Maten to say whether Tad should sign him. It would be a letdown for me, though.

If i had to pick one, it is only due to his being ready today. Give me Miller. But saying that, I like the problems that we have. Just do not hit the doomsday scenario and let CU have one of them. Either will make us better and I will not complain.

Well Nik tipped the scale in favor of Welsh for me with that post. It's close though.

I've been on record as being in the Miller camp and that hasn't changed. If we do miss on both, I think Maten's already moved on, so I'd wait until spring to see if anyone emerges or take a shot at the transfer market.

Such a nice question to be realistically considering.

I voted Welsh (yes, even before Nik's convincing argument ). I'd be ecstatic to land Miller. He'd be a highly welcomed addition. Mature kid who would have a very solid career here out of the gate and help cement the Buffs as a Dance regular. But Welsh, while there are no guarantees....there is a chance that he could turn CU basketball into something extremely special. The shockwaves landing Welsh would send around the Pac would be immensely valuable too. Welsh has a ways to go, but he already brings more to the table with his skill set than most any 7 footer.

In the unfortunate situation we don't land either one, I'd be inclined to bank it while taking a look around in the spring.

Both would be awesome but I like Welsh. People are saying Miller would be better because he is better on the fast break and getting up and down the court. I counter by saying while Welsh may not be able to do the things Miller can on the fast break, you won't be on the run all the time and teams will try to slow us down into a half-court offense. Enter Mr. Welsh. He could immensely help us with our half-court offense where we honestly have struggled the past couple years. With guys like Jenkins on the outside the inside out game would be fantastic.

I voted for Welsh. If we don't get him, he'll be playing against us. Whereas Miller would *probably* end up at a non PAC 12 school.

I voted Miller because I really like the physicality he would bring to the team immediately from day one.

Welsh. Basically what Nik said. A true 7 footer who is 240 pounds before his senior year in high school starts, and has some decent offensive skills. Game Changer!! Once he develops that is. Dreaming about what this team could be with Welsh, Dom, and some of the other players being targeted for the '15 and '16 classes.

Having said that, would love to have Miller as well.

Nice points and good arguments from both sides of the fence.

Have we come so far that we're debating which one of two stellar young players we want to sign during the early period? Not long ago we would be trying to find reasons to like the table scraps left available by most every other program in the country.
