Since I'm a bit of an outsider... I'll give an unbiased assessment of CU for this season. As far as defense goes, if the 1's stay healthy, CU should be in the top 30 in defense this year. The DBs and LBs were good, but the DL needs to do a better job with the pass rush. But it's a good situation if the injury bug doesn't hit.

On offense... average all around... CU really needs a gamebreaker at a skill position, and though there are quite a few solid and dependable players, there isn't that guy that can change a game really quickly. With the schedule, I see 6-7 wins and a bowl. The OL needs to man up and just get it done as well.

    Honest feedback of the assessment?

I think it's pretty accurate. I still haven't taken off my rose colored glasses yet as when compared to what I saw vs. CSU last season, this team looks like world beaters, but I'll come down out of the clouds in the next couple of days.

Don't necessarily agree about not having a game breaker. I think Patterson or Clemons are those guys. I really think Patterson takes back 2-3 punts for TDs this season. But I agree with not having a game breaker at RB. Talked to a guy at the game watch yesterday who was at the A&M game when Von Miller broke Speedy's ankle. He was saying it seems that Speedy has lost that "step" he had when he broke out as a frosh. More I think about it, it makes sense. Saw some holes opened by the O-line yesterday that Speedy used to get through and go for 15 but instead stopped for 3-4. Then when at the second level, it looked like defenders closed on him faster before he could make a cut and get more.

Right with you on the win total. After last year, that would feel like an MNC to me.

Me as well, though I think the potential is there to be significantly better. Eliminate the drive-crushing penalties, cut down on the dropped balls, find a go-to second back (Torres?) and establish a real running game, scheme better to get pressure on the quarterback...

Based on the way most of the Big XII represented yesterday 8 wins should not be out of the question.

Then again... My expectations go week to week.

I think you are being a bit generous with the defense, but they did look better than I expected at LB yesterday. Top 30 is a tall order, but maybe they get there. Unfortunately the injury bug has already hit in the secondary. Cannot afford any more injuries there. Also, we will get a better idea of how good this defense is after we see with a true passing threat. We were not challenged yesterday (and to be fair, we had quite a bit to do with that as well).

The offense still looks disjointed to me, even in year five. I would like to think we can just clean up the penalties and dropped passes and everything will be good, but we have been saying that for a while now. The pre-snap penalties are really getting tiresome. I can handle a personal foul on the punt returner, but multiple false start penalties is a bit different. Third down offense is still an issue too, 5 of 13 is not going to cut it. We have work to do here.

Overall, I'm not sure that game yesterday really answered any major questions we had about this team. Hopefully we will get a better idea over the next three games.

I think CSU made us look a bit better than we really are. If we hang with Cal next week I may agree 6-7 wins this year. If we get clobbered I still say we will be in the 3 to maybe 5 wins this year. That said I still enjoyed kicking CSU around.

I'd like to see our offense look more fluid. False starts, dropped passes looks like last season. Just sharpen it up a bit, or cinch it whatever. We have a better wr core that's for sure.

    My take on the game

First of all, it is always great to get a win over CSU! Here are a few of my thoughts on the game: I was pleased overall with the defense. The DB's and LB's looked great and give hope of keeping the Buffs in some games when the offense is struggling. We are going to need more pressure from the D-line...Pete had way too much time to throw, and better, more experienced quarterbacks the Buffs will face will shred the defense in the zone holes in future games if we don't start getting more heat on the QB!

After the scripted plays, we executed a very vanilla game plan, which is a credit to the players for their overall dominance over CSU. We were never threatened after the 2nd quarter, which allowed the Buffs to save a bunch of surprises for Cal. There are of course some execution issues that need to get ironed out, but we moved the ball on an experienced CSU defense (that dominated our offense last year) all day without too much trouble (excluding our own stupid penalties). The line needs to continue to work on opening bigger holes and providing better protection, but one of the biggest breakdowns i saw was BLock's pass blocking was terrible...it may be time for JT Torres to step in as the second back because of his more physical nature.

The coverage teams continue to be shaky...CSU was one tackle away from breaking a long return on both punts and kick offs a couple of times! The better teams we play this season are going to score some return touchdowns if we don't get that problem squared away. The return teams have some electricity factors again, and I think it will just be a matter of time before Patterson takes one to the house! Goodman, who I have been hard on over the years, actually looked good and may have finally overcome his mental obstacles. I loved the blocked field goal!!! How long has it been since the Buffs have done that??...I am thinking not since Tyler Brayton's playing days at least!

You all think CSU was terrible, and they will not be great, but I expect them to thump Wyoming this year...the same Wyoming team that we beat last year and who went to a bowl game last season. I think the Ewes will go 5-7 or 6-6...not great, but better than most people on this board are giving them credit for.

That Ewes team was not good. They will be lucky to win 3 or 4. The talent is young and they will learn a lot over the season but they are not very good. It is nice to get a win over CSU but we learned very little about this CU team. We do have better receivers this year and I love Clemons and Patterson. Both lines make me nervous. We got absolutely no pressure on a true freshman yesterday. The LBs and DBs will be good, not great. I exected picks against a Fosh QB and we got 3. On the Oline, penalties and protection that was not great. Running holes were just OK as well. We had better athletes and it showed. Next week we will see how it goes. That team will pressure our D and we see a fast defense.

Bottom line, we did what we were supposed to. Next week will tell a lot more.

My take from yesterday is...to wait and see. I see potential and talent, but not really sure what to make of the whole package yet.

I think maybe a little too generous on the defense and possibly too harsh on the offense. The DL did not get any pressure in the four man rush all game. And, our blitzes rarely got much more. They were super STOUDT against the run, however. So, if the DL can manage to collapse the pocket a little better, I think your prediction could be pretty close.

On offense, I think they do have some game breaker types now with Patterson and Richardson. Richardson will take time to get up to speed, but he's fast and talented, it's clear. Clemons gives us that tall target for corner routes and fades, and Scotty is a protypical slot receiver. He's going to be open a lot with Clemons, Patterson, Richardson, and even WillJeff on the outside.

What will determine whether the offense is average or above average is (1) whether the OL can start to dominate and create space for running and (2) whether Tyler can play 5-10 percent better than he showed yesterday as far as making his throws, making his reads, and making the right decisions in the pocket.

I think if we work on the little things, cinch it up, get our horns out, and bring our lunchpails we'll only be 10 plays from a bowl game instead of 20.

Oh, not that I think we'll beat Cal BUT after looking at the game again today, I DO think we went plain vanilla on the offense once the game was comfortably in-hand; thus I believe we'll see more of the offense next week. If D plays well, we cut down on the flags, and the O get a running game going in addition to the passing the game we may have a chance. Still dont predict a win but it will be closer than expected.

    Expected by whom?

I believe the opening betting line has us as 4 point dogs. My impression is that Cal fans are a lot more confident than that line and CU fans are a lot less confident.

It has already moved to the 7.5-8 range. I'm not surprised because 4 seemed very low.

Is it just me, or were we rushing three an awful lot against CSU? Why is that? Against a true freshman QB, no less. This team has fared notoriously poorly rushing three...

We also don't appear to have much potential for big plays, which is necessary in CFB IMO. There was very, very little throwing down the field.

I have one word for the second half...the offense let off the gas when the game was in hand. Buffs in coverage=interceptions.

Maybe three interceptions would be part of the argument for rushing only 3 or 4 guys. That is why I was one of the only guys prior to the game that didn't believe we should blitz. The thing about blitzing is that, well, csu blitzed on McNights TD. If you do it and do not get to the QB, there is usually a recevier open somewhere.

If I were one to bet against CU, I'd put my house on Cal if they are giving only 4. That seems REALLY out of whack. I'm betting it goes up to at least 7.

I'm waiting until after Cal for judgment. From game 1 to game 2 is when good teams make strides and bad ones revert to their losing ways.

Positives -- I was quite impressed with the D. Major and Perkins looked awesome imo. Solid effort by the D though.

Negatives -- what's already been mentioned. Penalties & the finesse O (but this is who the Buffs are now. soft on O. & passing teams tend to rack up lots of penalties)

We have a good contigent of Buffs here in Bahrain so I was able to watch Denver Directv using the Monsoon Hava HD Player(similar to a Slingbox). The game started at 9:00pm and there was much drinking and eating as we celebrated the win. I will be watching again this weekend (10:30pm start this time) and singing the fight song with every score.

I'm not certain if CU's dominance on Saturday was a result of how good we are, or how poorly CSU played.

The one thing I saw on Saturday that I have not seen in years out of CU was CONFIDENCE. If they play with the swagger they showed on Saturday, the
sky's the limit with this team, and they beat Cal by 10.
