My thoughts on the class thus far

I like the class thus far. Think there are some good athletes that can make an impact on both sides of the ball. Things that need to happen for it to be a good class come signing day IMO:

    1. Need to focus on the lines. Getting five for each side seems like a reasonable number to me. I would like to see a particular emphasis put on the DL. We need some numbers there. Our only commit thus far on the DL, Uzo-Diribe, is not a guarantee. What occurs in DL recruiting will make or break this class.

    2. I would like to see another RB in this class to complement Mister Jones. Preferably a speedier back.

    3. Would like to see a third TE signed if the numbers are right. This would allow some flexibility with Thornton. Perhaps he can be a big WR. As mentioned in another thread, Luke Walter's eligibility will probably come into play here. This is an area where targeting a JUCO guy might be prudent to allow one or both of the incoming freshmen to redshirt. Plus Favors is still taking visits.

    4. If the right FG kicker is available, make a run at him.

    5. As has been stressed by many on this site, please sign a full class of 25.

Read somewhere that Hirschman may be eligible to graduate HS early and enroll early. Not that he said he would, but he could.

If so, I believe that scholarship would count for the current unfilled class (2009) and we would have an extra scholly available for 2010.

(correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what I think happens.)

The glaring weakness I see (as you pointed out) is DL

Good post, sums it up pretty well.

I am worried about the number of soft commits we have, though. I'd also like to see a few more linemen, both offensive and defensive line. Another TE and maybe a bigger WR. A couple of LBers wouldn't hurt either.

Many if's here --- if the staff is still in place next year, AND the same style of offense is used.....(you get the drift)..... then it might be smart to recruit a fullback this cycle.

I'm ok (not real impressed) with what we've done thus far. Its always the finish that I hold my breath on. What will we have to settle for to sign 25?
That's the big question to me.

We need to sign more than 25, because we all know we will have drop outs during the admissions process.

Do we have 25 schollys available? IIRC, I thought we only had something like 20~ish because of the small senior class. Attrition has helped  a little I suppose.

I'd like to see them over sign by 3 or 4, we are going to lose people in the off season, and at least one guy wont qualify.

Since this article was posted in September, Scott and Shields have left, which makes 23. Tau is certainly up in the air.

Seems like we are filling the 'ships faster this year and not aiming as high as last year. I think that resulted in us taking some last second guys with high upsides, but questionable ability to get into school. This year, I'd expect it to be near 100% acceptance, as it was the year before.

I would like to see us sign 25 minimum. Need some big bodies. Seems clear the staff has focused on athletes at all positions.

looks like a "depth" class to me... we need a ton of DB's and Dline.

I think the class overall is pretty decent, but considering where we are as a program, I think it's excellent. I truly do believe that Hawk is here next year, whether we like it or not, so with that said, this class is coming together nicely. If we do somehow win out and a bowl blesses us with a bid, and at the same time ND loses horribly, maybe Martin even comes over. I really am hoping that Legaux and Canty pull in Legania - I wanted him more than his teammates.

One thing I've wondered - we seem to recruit the OLine well. Why don't we transfer some of them over to the DLine? We've switched Dline to Oline in the past (Wilder, Goree), but why not the other way around?

Based on the Issues Kai is having at UCLA with dlinemen shorter than him, he might have made way more sense at nt/dt than FB regardless of his feet.

I just hope anyone who commits is committing to CU first, and not Dan.

I think the lines are the biggest problem here, but I think Bosnu, Forrest West, and Kasa will be very good players. Does someone in the know, know, what will come of our committed if Hawk is run off?

I would suspect a lot more than that. Unless you are a kid who grew up following a school, I don't see how it's possible to commit to the school and not the coach. Sure the staff is selling you on the school, but it's that person who you are buying into.

Not that I follow recruiting as closely as many here do but it's especially hard to get fired up about it this year. So many if's. I hope for the best with this class and it looks like a very good start but nothing feel certain.

I am sure a quarter of the class will pull their verbal as Hawk gets the boot, and then another quarter will follow as a new coach is hired, maybe more if no one has ever heard of the new guy. Point is, they need to do this thing about 15 minutes after the NU game is over and try and get someone lined up ASAP so they can hit the recruiting trail right away.

It's also timing, though. If a guy commits to CU, then his other schools of interest move on and take other players. Not every kid who decommits in January can walk right to their second place school land find a scholly. Some might not have other options at that time, so they'd stay, but not be ecstatic about it.

But I do think people underestimate Hawkins' ability to reel kids in with his personality. He is a big factor in our recruiting, big.

Every school loses committed recruits when it fires a head coach, but, based on your comment (which I believe is true), I think we should expect more than average attrition if Hawk is fired. So I agree that if he goes, the earlier the better, from a recruiting standpoint.

If kids are already sold on the school and area, it probably then really depends on who the replacement coach would be and how that new relationship is pursued.

Agree. Though 5 may be too many at OL. Minimum 3, but I'd prefer 4.

I would be fine with 3-4 OL. The key is getting numbers on the DL. We need to build some depth there.

I would also add that Slider's idea of bringing in a JUCO corner seems like a good idea as well. Obviously, we must be selective in targeting JUCOs, but I think TE and CB are two positions where we need an impact performer from this class ready to contribute next season.

Also, I am hoping the coaches are evaluating athletes that can potentially be kick/punt returners right away. Those spots should be up for grabs after this season. Like I said in the original post, I see some good athletes in the group thus far so maybe one of them can step in right away and compete for the return jobs.

You are going to spend hours every day with your coach. A teenager wants to know who that is going to be, and wants to think they will have a mutally respectful relationship.

I think we most definitely need a true center in this class, if not two, plus a tackle and one more guard, so 3-4 more in addition to Munyer would be perfect for this class.

A Juco CB and TE would also help, especially a TE would give the young players time to grow.

KR/PR will be interesting with Clemons, Ussery, Darden available next year. We need another Rodney Stewart back there at KR/PR if we could.

One thing I'm wondering is the LS position. We graduate Drescher this year, correct? Is anyone waiting in the wings? If not, that becomes another position that needs to be addressed.
