My old AMD Phenom II X6 1050T finally showed it's age with the Battlefield 4 beta. I couldn't play the game unless I turned off every single program on my computer and I still lagged.

What an awesome time to be doing an upgrade. Going Intel this time because AMD is sucking ass in the CPU department. It was one hell of a choice between Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge-E, or Haswell. I was hearing some people complaining about Haswell because they don't overclock as well as Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge. I almost pulled the trigger but in the end I felt the Z77 chipset was starting to show it's age. I went with the Haswell i7-4770K. From what I am reading it has insane single thread performance.

Motherboard choices were so many and so good I just went with the one that I thought looked the coolest. Yeah I picked on looks... Memory is insanely cheap these days. 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR3 DDR3 2133 for 160 bucks?!?! Going to be trying out a closed loop watercooler for the first time too. CORSAIR H100i

I have AMD 7950 video card which is still doing a good job so I figured I wouldn't upgrade. They have actually dropped to around the 200 price point. I might just buy another and crossfire them.

I ran a bunch of benchmarks on current computer and can't wait to benchmark new parts when they come. I will be ready for Battlefield 4 come Tuesday!

That sounds like an awesome setup. I want to build another computer sometime, but that system would be overkill for running Quicken and reading Allbuffs. Last system I built and still have running was an Athlon x64 chip, can't even remember the exact one, ASUS sli motherboard with a NVIDIA graphics card from BFG. I had 2 gig then, now up to 4. Upgraded to Windows 7 a few years ago after I bought my laptop.

Sweet. I backed off the liquid cooling last go round and I've already replaced a fan. Let us know how you like it

If all you do is browse the interwebs er allbuffs and Quicken you could upgrade for under $500 Not much for gaming since this would be using the built in video in the Haswell

Yeah I have held off for too long. I would love to do a custom water cooling loop someday though after a few hours on Frozencpu.com I figured I could easily spend 700 bucks on that site just building a water cooling system.

    800 bucks.

Awesome build! I stopped doing water cooling because of bad experiences in the past. You can achieve near same results with the right air cooling if you don't mind noise. I play with headphones on so I don't hear it anyways. My gaming rig is getting dated but it still takes care of most things I throw at it. i5-3500k Sandy w/ GeForce 560Ti and 16GB RAM. I'm sure I'll need to do an upgrade sometime in the futures but it's adequate for what I play right now. My biggest performance issue is still running HDDs.

I am so sick of CPU heat sinks that are 12 inches tall, block memory slots and make all kinds of noise... I don't think a haswell would be big enough upgrade for you to justify the cost. Though I would throw in a new video card soon. Tons of new models coming out which means good prices at the moment. And for the love of God get an SSD. This here is one of the top SSD right now. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009NB8WTI...TF8&colid=1PSVFFDLKCNEP&coliid=I12N8H5OD57ARS When I went with my SSD I went with the 256 GB which has been plenty of space if I don't install every single game I own. I keep mechanical HD for storing music/videos/porn etc

Parts are in and running! The Corsair h100i is a little louder than expecting but I give zero ****s about how loud my PC is. After installing it I will never deal with a huge heat sink/fan again. I have not benchmarked vs old CPU yet since I am playing with overclocking. So far 4.3 GHz is stable with just a minor voltage increase to 1.2 volts. Temps are not bad at all so far. Around 65-68 under stress test. I am thinking I may not have to delid this processor. (Google the vice method lol) I am going to try for 4.5 GHz today. That would be a full 1 GHz overclock. Seems to be all luck when it comes to how well Haswell's overclock. I may be lucky. At idle this processor is at 1.6 watts. That is just crazy. Haswell is going to lead to some long battery life in laptops.

h100i fit like a glove in my monster case.

What are your specs? I haven't picked it up yet so I'm curious if it would push my rigs limits.

Hey, no jokes. I sold those things along with Atari 400s and 800s. Then moved on to selling Epson PC clones with 8086 processors and a turbo button. Two slots for 5.25 floppys, no hard drives yet.

The commodores had to be one of the most failure ridden products ever made, more defective units than functional.

Stable for the last couple hours. Temps are at my limit under load so no going higher. I may delid the processor. I hear that is good for a 20 to 30 degree Celsius drop.

I doubt BF4 is choppy due to your CPU. Its most likely your graphics.

I'm now wondering if it is because of the servers right now and the lag. I'm also only at 4 gigs of RAM, so I may look into adding a couple more.

This game is surprising CPU heavy. I went from 35 FPS to 90 FPS with the same video card with this new CPU

That is a problem right there. I was watching it last night and the 64 bit BF4 was using around 6 GB of memory.
