Nice step forward for Mills and Sharpe last night

Sharpe finally showed some aggressiveness on the offensive end. Now I understand what all the hype was about. He was quick enough to blow by Kansas State defenders off the dribble and had the elevation & strength to finish at the rim. Further, he (along with Higgins) gets the credit for Pullen struggling most of the night due to some great on-ball defense.

Mills posts aggressively on the offensive end (even though he didn't get to see him fed the ball). More importantly, he runs well for a big man which fits perfectly in Boyle's system. His 2 blocked shots were huge last night. Nothing changes your defensive shooting percentage for the better as much as having a skilled big man as your last line of defense.

Also, since I'm talking about our freshman class I also want to mention Roberson. That blocked shot he had on KSU's 7 footer was impressive as hell. Plus, he kept so many plays alive by hustling and using his athleticism to tip rebounds or loose balls that we eventually recovered to get extra possessions. He does so much that doesn't even show up on the stat sheet.

As much as I loved the win, I loved it just as much to see our freshmen making a huge contribution. Major confidence builder.

i was going on and on about this last night. Definitely agree and hope we see both of their minutes increase. Although, Sharpe is just godawful from the field/line. A guy with his game CANNOT be that bad at the line or he will not play much, especially with more boyle recruits coming in next year. It is so frustrating to see an athlete held back by his inability to shoot. Does he just not put in the work?

He works. It's a confidence thing as he works his way back. When I was in Vegas for the tourney a guy who had coached SS was there. He went on and on about how SS would regularly knock down a dozen 3s in a row in practice. Give it more time. Shannon's not all the way back yet.

Good. Cause having him on the floor frustrated the hell out of Pullen. I love what he brings to our defense.

I think Sharpe had and up and down game. It was great to see him take it to the rack, especially with both hands, but he finished with zero assists and I didn't really see him drive and then dish it out. He also had two turnovers, one which was really bad a midcourt. he really needs to work on his outside shot, but he plays some pretty good defense, hopefully he will grow like Thorne did for us.

Is it just me or does Mills already look like he put on like 10 pounds since he has been here? He was really skinny early in the year, but it looks like he put some bulk in his shoulders, hopefully he can follow what tunks did and add 25 pounds this offseason and we will have a nice center rotation next year. I think we can be a really good team is Burks stays one more year and should finish top 3 in the PAC:12 if he does.

    next year:

    PG: Tomlinson/Booker/Sharpe
    SG: Brown/Spencer
    SF: Burks/Roberson
    PF: Dufault/Cain
    C: SHT/Mills

If Burks stay we should be a really deep team and be able to go 11 deep without any problems. The will absolutely kill PAC 10 teams coming to Boulder to play if our guys only have to play 25 minutes instead of 35

Here are the stats on Sharpe in high school.

As a senior at Centennial in LA, he led his team to a 27-5 record, including 7-1 in league play. He averaged 17.9 points, 7.7 assists, 7.9 rebounds and 3.2 steals. He shot 49.4% from the field, but only 19.3% from 3pt range. Free throw shooting was 63%. He was also the PG for the Compton Magic AAU team that was ranked #3 in the nation in 2008.

Then, he spent a year at Laurinburg Institute but didn't play basketball. That was followed with a lost year as a freshman at CU after he needed microfracture surgery to repair a new injury he suffered in October practices.

The book on him coming out of high school was that Sharpe needed to develop his shot (both his jumper and his free throws). He needs to work on gaining a compact stroke that looks the same every time. That's just repetition in the gym. All he really needs is to get to the point where he's over 70% from the charity stripe. And from 3 point range, he wants to be consistent enough that you can't leave him open or he'll make it. That will force defenders to fight over the top of screens to stay on him when we run that motion weave. If they go over the top, it's going to be almost impossible to defend his dribble penetration. Now, they just go underneath since they don't respect his jumper and it has neutralized his offense.

(I think the coach overheard in Vegas was exaggerating to pimp his guy, to be honest. That's cool though. It shows the love he has for Shannon and reinforces everything we know about him being one of those guys who has a certain charisma that makes him a leader. You want that in a point guard.)

The good thing for Sharpe is that with his defensive skills he doesn't have to be great on the offensive end to be a contributor, he just has to be a threat. If he can develop enough of an outside shot to keep defenders reasonably honest his ability to slash will make him an offensive contributor. If he can get his FTs into the low 70% range then he will make people pay for fouling him and he becomes a problem for defenses.

I don't know that he will ever be a star at CU but with some of the other guys we have coming in and Tad's history of developing guys we don't need Sharpe to be a star, we do need him to be a solid contributor however who can give us some solid minutes and change the pace of a game to our favor. His work on Pullen last night not only frustrated Pullen but seemed to put the whole KSU squad out of whack at times. For a night that Burks had maybe his worst game, Roberson and Relphorde were close to non-factors and Tomlinson was not available the work of Sharpe may have been the single most important factor in the win.

I also agree that Mills looks like he is physically maturing. He has a long way to go but his rapid development so far shows that he is a willing and able learner. I was thinking (rare occurrance) on the last inbounds that putting in Mills to cover the inbound passer could have made the inbounds that much more difficult. He doesn't have the strength but on that play his length and agility could have made for a difficult obstacle to pass over or around. They did use Dufault for that but Mills is at least four inches taller, much longer in the arms, and seems to move a little more quickly and "wider."

he is ridiculously popular with the crowd already. People cheer like crazy whenever he comes in or leaves a game. The Student section especially loves him.

True but he favored Mills over Trey and Trent, which i thought was smart cause mills is like the buffs birdman, he comes in and electrifies the crowd with any good play. Everyone loves him.

i think at this point, and where the team is at, it makes sense to get ben some meaningful minutes. i'm not suggesting we wasted his red shirt but he could proabably be used a bit more than we've seen.

I think it is because Mills plays much better than both of those guys, IMO. Trent was out of position a lot last night and even was part of the collision between him and I think it was Burks that resulted in a travel.

    What about Billy Boidock???

I dont know about Preston, but I would imagine Billy is doing something good. I had a bunch of classes with him (Mechanical Engineer), and he got ridiclous grades, crazy smart.

Jose Winston anyone? Exactly who Sharpe is reminding me of right now, although it looks to me like Sharpe has something offensively, just needs to get some confidence. Dude showed he can dribble penetrate and get 2 points. Now he needs to learn how to draw the double team in the lane, then find the open man. Come to think of it Burks needs to do the same.

After Mills blocked those 2 shots, did anyone else notice that K-State stayed away from him? Noticeable difference down low defensively when he was in the game. Shouldn't see anymore than 10-15 minutes a game from here on out, but get that kid some playing time.

Sharpe and Mills stepping up and giving quality minutes could be what this team needs to get over the hump.

Beyond the blocks, Mills also drew an absolutely essential offensive foul fighting for position down low. Might earn him some minutes. Definitely interesting to see future play. I would be surprised if he didn't get a few minutes against Kansas size upfront, especially considering the previous games failure to protect the paint.

Scotchy, Jose Winston was exactly who I was hoping Sharpe would be in terms of applying on-ball D. While opposing teams seemed to never even bother guarding Winston, watching him play D was one of the things I grew to love about watching the buffs in that era. It was kind of like the specialized thrill of sitting behind first base at Coors and watching Armando Reynoso's pick-off move.

I'm really interested in seeing Sharpe next year after he's had a chance to put the knee injury further in the past.

Shannon Sharpe only averaged 7 points per game this year at Cal Poly Pomona. Keep in mind he transferred to a D-2 school. Great athlete, not a great basketball player. Amazing that Bzdelik once said he was as good as Alec Burks.

Shannon would not be getting any playing time on this team but to be fair he wasn't that bad a player. Just working from memory it seems that he had some major knee issues that reduced his effectiveness that would still be slowing him down at CPP.

Sharpe missed his freshman season after needing micro-fracture surgery on his knee (hurt it during pre-season workouts). I don't think he would have been a good shooter, but he would have been a defensive stopper and a human highlight reel on the break and off drives. We never really got to see him play.
