Nick Hirschman said Wednesday he left Colorado's program because he made a commitment before spring practice that he'd leave if he wasn't named the No. 1 quarterback.

Well, not quite as illogical as that Offensive Lineman's reasoning for picking Nebraska a few years ago....

If Nick really has a confirmation that he can get into a Master's program at an Ivy league school, then he's doing the right thing. Despite what he tells Henderson, I'd got to believe he has good information to support that move. His Bachelors in Communications isn't that valuable by itself frankly.

And lastly, for the record Nick, you didn't outplay Wood. I didn't have it as close. On the 100 point scale:

    Wood 90
    Hirschman 78
    Dillon 62

The opinion of one. Wish we had you for a backup though.

You didn't make the case that you are the #1 alone. You were good but Conner was just as good or better. Good luck Nick!

Here is his other actual quote:
    "I believe I was No. 1."

He wouldn't have left if HCMM picked him as #1. I would have left because I can't take another blind coaching staff. Glad I'm staying for the time being....

"Of course I did," he said. "I'm sure he felt he outplayed me and I'm sure (redshirt freshman) Shane Dillon thought he outplayed both of us. That's the way we're wired as athletes. We do what the head coach calls and says and we're good soldiers about it.

"I believe I was No. 1. That's the coach's call and it's more about the commitment I made to myself before spring started. If that decision wasn't made, I was going to move on."

Remind me in September why this kid left CU! I wasn't surprised he left, but I'm shocked at where he is going to. I don't believe his chances of playing are greater than they were here btw.

Akron < Colorado in every way imaginable. Their football team is more lousy. Their staff is a joke. The degree won't mean as much back in NorCal, where I'm sure Nick will end up....

Snapshot of the primary position coach who will be mentoring him:

Offensive Coordinator and QB coach has the following experience.
2009-10 – North Alabama (graduate assistant)
2011 – East Mississippi Community College (quarterbacks)
    2012- – Akron (quarterbacks)

East Mississippi plays NU in Lincoln this year IIRC. Their mascot is the Fightin' Hush Puppy.

Nick: Not to be too judgmental, but if you are mid-level (talent-wise) and obsessed with playing a sport in your fifth year of eligibility, you have lost focus. Start thinking about a job that pays money, and not playing football in the MAC. Just some free advice. Don't be that guy that talks about your football career in a deserted bar or a franchise health club.

By all means Nick, it is absolutely vital you get a job right away and start working your ass off. Taking advantage of a fifth year of school is really dumb.

I'm not sure using up his eligibility and getting a year of grad school paid for is all that Uncle Rico of him.

I don't think any mid-level talent who really loves football should give up if they have eligibility left. He's getting a free graduate degree and a chance to compete in the next two years regardless of whether it was here or at Akron. Best of luck to Nick.
