I am having a hard time trying to figure out who will be the favorite in the north in '09.

Nebraska would be my guess, but they lose Ganz, a bunch on D, and Lucky.

Mizzou loses Daniel, and you can kind of sense that their moment of glory is coming to an end.

Kansas does have Reesing back, but they lose a lot of starters.

Colorado is coming off 5-7, but they bring back a lot of experience.
I really think CU can win the north, for one, it will be down next year.

Who will be the preseason favorite?

That makes sense. They did just beat this years North winner, and Reesing is back. Plus, they are coming off a good bowl win AGAIN!

KU will be the pre-season favorite, but CU will take it. They have a brutal schedule again given TT, OU and UT.

I consider the North wide open though. Kansas has the best QB (by far) heading into the season, but they have a rough schedule. NU has some nice pieces coming back on offense, but the QB position is a major question mark and they have the top North teams all on the road. Mizzou loses a lot of key contributors. CU is the wild card, and actually has the top teams in the North all at home. KSU and ISU will struggle IMO.

Nebraska..... (Please don't shoot me...) Honestly I think Nebraska is surrounded with the most talent. even if some of it is undeveloped they have had the chance to be plugged into a steady system. .
... Yea. i'm a little sick from saying that. butttt i hope i have something different to say next year..

I think Nebraska will be picked by most to win the North.

I have to agree half-way here. I think it comes down to the game in Boulder against the Corn next year. Which is as it should be!

I say Nebraska and Kansas up the point when the Huskes play CU. Then it may be up in the air depending upon how the Buffs develope during the season.

Keep in mind the NU-CU game is in Boulder next season and that will even things up some.

You can bookmark this now, and come back to it in June:

    1. Nebraska - Preseason magazines love the old guard. No one will criticize the safe pick, and the Cornhuskers will be on top and ranked in everyone's top 25. The Corn sealed the deal with the bowl win.

    2. Missouri - Two time defending Big 12 North champ. No one will predict a fall past 2nd place.

    3. Kansas - based on the win over Missouri, the bowl win, and Reesing coming back.

    4. Colorado - if the Buffs had gone bowling, and posted a winning record, CU would be a trendy pick to move higher. Now, with three straight losing seasons, no one will make the gutsy call and pick the Buffs.

    5. Kansas State - Much will be said about the return of Snyder, but there is simply a dearth of quality players.

    6. Iowa State - No reason to believe the Cyclones are going to move up any time soon.

Predicting the predictions is not complicated. Go with the safe picks; go with the national powers. If they don't come through, then everyone is "surprised", and you don't look like an idiot.

Note - this is not my prediction for how the North will play out - just my prediction for what we will see from Athlon, Street and Smith, etc., next June.

    Go Buffs!

I think you'll see these two flipped around. Missouri losing Daniels and Macklin and Kansas returning Reesing and Briscoe...

It's going to be a close one again and I think it may very well come down to that game in Boulder between NU and CU. CU has the talent there to make it happen if they can just get over the damn injury bug and play to their potential. The QB position is going to be a huge decision for us and how we will fair next season. ISU and KSU will still be horrible and Missery is going to take a step down IMO. I think it comes down to KU, NU, and CU for the North next season.

We have as good a chance at winning the north as anyone else in the north... Well, minus ISU that is...

I am really starting to think that a previous season has little to no effect on what happens the next year. Too many people change from year to year and even when you have the same people the next year, just being the same makes for vastly different outcomes that have about the same chance of being good as they do bad.

All I know is we better be competitive this year or next year around this time won't be very fun. Hmmm, since Shanahan wants to finish building his house in Denver, maybe he can... Ehh, nevermind.

    Get a rope!

Does NU have a super quarterback waiting in the wings or something? Any chance he is sub six foot and cant see over the line?

Depends on which of the two QB's I personally think will start that you may be impressed with:

First: (Sophmore next season) Kody Spano-6'2" 210lbs 4.7 40 time, ranked #9 nationally in dual threat QB's in the nation last season. Ranked in the Top 50 players in Texas last season, ranked in the Top 30 QB's in the nation last season. Is more of a pocket passer with a strong arm, can be effective in the run mode, but would rather take a hit and deliver a strike than take off running. 3 star ranking

Second: (True Freshman, began school in December) Cody Green-6'4" 220lbs 4.6 40 time, ranked #10 nationally in dual threat QB's this season. Is dangerous with not only his arm, but with his legs as well. Is more of a dual-threat QB than Spano and is shiftier. 4 star on rivals and 5 star on scout.

Out of those two I see Green as a guy you build a team around and try and get into the championship game with in 3 or 4 years. Since he is already at NU he'll have a little bit of help learning the offense which is good. If he decides to redshirt then as long as Spano has the offense down Spano will start until Green takes him out of that position. The other QB's in the waiting I doubt will see much playing time. Just a gut feeling of mine..........

I want to see Colorado and Nebraska returning to the top of the North and I think this very well could be the year. It's always fun to watch them play at the end of the season to see which team will win the North. CU beats Neb. at home to win the Big XII North in 09!

Here's a gut feeling of mine... Nebraska will realize how little fun it is breaking in an unexperienced, underclassman at quarterback... and NU fans will finally appreciate Joe Ganz, well after he's gone and is selling copiers.

Yeah we lose our DT, DE, OLB, as far as our starters go. We take the biggest hit on offense. Losing our OT, OG, both WRs', RB (we are ok there), and of course our QB. Our QB and WR spots are my biggest concern.

As far as Missery goes....I think they will still be competitive but not like they once were. They have a great new QB (Gabbert) but this is his full year starting. However....Like you said, their glory days are dead for awhile.

Colorado = They were bitten hard by the injury bug. I expect them to bounce back and do well next year. I gained a ton of respect for your coach after the NU/CU game.

KU = Well they have Reesing back and there is no denying that kid is a friggen gamer! It will be interesting to see how the Fat Man handles the losses of his key players.

I think the North will come down to 3 teams next year. NU, CU, and KU. That's my two cents in the matter anyways.

Anyways.....good luck with your recruiting class and let's all kick the hell out of the south!

That's a great damn question! All the reports I read were that he has good wheels and can throw on the run. I know his final game at his previous college he screwed up his knee so who knows if that is still a factor. Hell by now, you would think he has the offense down, being here for 2 years.

    Is Patrick Witt any good?

And is Suh going pro? Frankly, i think he should, he'd get drafted top 15 if he goes now, but obviously I want him off your team!

The word is still out on Witt. He has almost zero game experience but he has the offense down, so it's still a waiting game with him. As far as Suh goes....he says he's 99% certain he is coming back. He is getting an NFL draft assessment and the so called "experts" are saying that he is a projected 31st pick. This is according to Mel Kiper. He would be the 4th DT on the board. All the interviews I have seen with Suh, says he is coming back. Who knows.

I think it's Kansas and a very mediocre North next year. I would say Nebraska but they lose Ganz, Lucky, and their top 3 receivers. Not to mention Most of their d-line. I just think you are not only adding a QB but a team of receivers.

On a lighter note, I don't see any reason why Colorado can't compete in the North next year. For me the only games that I would say aren't "very winnable" would be @Texas and @Okie State.

After watching Okie State in the Holliday Bowl, I'd say they're beatable as well. Once Bryant was out of the game, their entire offense ground to a halt. Their defense was never anything all that special.

Got to give props to our Northern Rivals... 3-0 in this Bowl Season.

South is currently 1-2, though there is no comparison of competition.

Lee is supposed to be the best runner out of the bunch, but we haven't seen much of him. He is still an unknown compared to Witt even though Witt hasn't seen much playing time either. The problem with Witt is he is still very green right now and I think the nerves get the best of him.
