Notes from the Independence Bowl

Indy Bowl

Guest
Greetings from the Independence Bowl. I just came from an event coordinated by Lift Up America, a foundation that supports efforts to eliminate hunger in this country. An entire truckload of food was distributed to local agencies in our area that provide for needy families. 18 pallets of food were donated by Tyson Foods and distributed. What I wanted each of you to know is that the ENTIRE Colorado football team participated in the distribution. Their response to this event was overwhelming. It was not required attendance and we anticipated that only a handful would participate. Without their assistance, the work would have not been completed in a timely manner. Athletic Director Mike Bohn was in attendance as well and assisted us in the endeavor. The football players had smiles on their faces and were extremely enthusiastic to help. The event was a tremendous success due to the participation of the Colorado football team. This is not something that the typical sports media would cover so I wanted the CU fans to know what impact your players had on our community.

I want to relay one story of an elderly gentleman from one of the surrounding communities where the distribution took place. He arrived by himself looking for assistance. He lived 2 miles from the site and had heard that food was being distributed. He did not realize that the distribution was thru approved agencies. The Colorado players took matters into their own hands. Upon arrival, he was offered three cases of food by the players. Seeing that he was not physically able to carry this load by himself, three Colorado players offered to carry the boxes 2 miles back to his home and began the trek. Shreveport Police intervened and offered to load the food into a vehicle and transport him home. With a police escort, the players loaded the food in a bowl courtesy vehicle and were escorted by Shreveport Police back to the gentlemen’s home. The players unloaded and carried the boxes into the man’s home for him.

I want you to know how much this means to not only our bowl organization but also the community at large. You can be proud of the way your university is represented. These fine young men made a difference in the lives of numerous families in our community and will be remembered long after the lights of the stadium fade on Sunday night. From everyone in the Shreveport / Bossier City community, thank you for sending your finest to our area.

Very cool. Thank you for sharing that with us. It certainly makes me proud to root for the Buffs.

What a nice story. All us Buff fans are aware of the type of young men we have on the team. It is good to see that folks outside the program are seeing it as well. I sure hope this story gets mentioned during the telecast! GO BUFFS!

Thanks for posting.

You and the rest of America should always know that when you invite the Buffs you are inviting the best there is. We are glad you are enjoying our Buffs as much as we do.

Hold on one second. There is no way Hawkins could have put together a team that has unlimited potential on the field, and behaves like this off the field, in 2 years. This Buffaloes revival just keeps getting better, and its starting to get ridiculous. When I read something like this, I think that Colorado has something very special brewing, and I think it all starts with Hawk and Bohn. Great job CU!

It makes me feel so good to hear stuff like this. Let's hope that this is the beginning of many more stories of a clean and classy Buffalo Football program. On a side note, I really hope I get a chance to meet some of the bowl staff while I'm down there. I think it's really cool that someone from the bowl (the chairman no less) is reaching out to fans on a forum. I can't wait to see a huge crowd rooting for the Buffs in Shreveport and even though I have to leave tonight for the 16 hour bus ride, I'm really excited for a Buffs win on Sunday.

I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible. I'll be in attendance at many of the CU events beginning Saturday. Again, thank you for supporting our game and your team. Travel safe. Go Buffs!!

We should focus on the original post...what a great story that needs to get out!

Yep, completely agree. Their actions will touch a community. You just don't hear things like this often enough. Kudo's to the players, the coaches, the staff, everyone involved.

Ya know, there might just be a few more fans in the stands cheering for the Buffs after this.

Mr. Darwin,
Thank you for sharing this story. It was reported in the Boulder paper yesterday so the story got out. I am very proud of all of our young men. And thank you for being generous with your compliments. Unfortunately I am unable to get to the game to meet you.

what a great story, thanks for sharing it with us...

unfortunately, i will not be able to make it down to shreveport this year either, but i have purchased some tickets for donation to some of those who can make it. i am looking forward to the game, and i hope the stands are full of cheering fans from both teams.

thanks for coming to this board to provide your personal messages. you show a lot of class, and that reflects greatly on your community as well.

take care, and GO BUFFS!

(Posted this before, but it moved to the off-topic thread along with the rest of my post. Reposting it here to keep the positives about the team and especially the Indy Bowl representatives in the right spot... )

Great story about the players on this team. Really appreciate the representative of the bowl game coming here to bring it to our attention. Making the effort to do these kind of things speaks well for the Indy Bowl in my book. I would really love to hear the announcers talking about this story to a national audience Sunday night.

now that's what I'm talkin' about...

Love this kind of stuff. You can tell these kids will have a future after college football, at the next level, or as productive citizens in their chosen city.
