OL recruiting - a big problem

Strangely enough, OL recruiting was the highlight of the HaLkins years. Unfortunately, we had major issues with position coaching (except under Grimes), the strength & conditioning program, a culture of being soft, and horrible luck with injuries/discipline. But the OL is one place where we were bringing in a lot of talent over those 5 long, long, long years.

To me it's indicative of what was discussed last week. The local kids are going to be a tougher sell while the mentality about the Buffs being bottom feeders continues to exist. No one is closer to it than they are. For now we are generally going to have to shop elsewhere. I was happy about the kids we got this last class but irritated by the ones we missed. We need to start landing the John Lopez, Colin Sutton, Dane Crane type kids pretty soon if we are going to make a significant upgrade at the position and set the pace for years to come. Shame of it is Buff linemen have been graduating and going to the NFL even during the losing years and this still doesn't seem to be much of an incentive for some of these kids.

Having guys like givens and tuioti not panning out didn't help.

I don't see us making the necessary offensive improvement unless we improve on OL. I'm a recruiting novice but still unsure why OL was not more important with the most recent class. One thing that I hope Embo will not hesitate to change/upgrade his assistant coaches. If Marshall is not pulling his load recruiting/coaching than I would hope he goes.

That said, assistant coach instability, lower talent level, and lower salaries as compared to other programs (resulting in an inability to get better asst coaches when needed) are, in my opinion, some of the top issues that have held CU back and hampered improvement. And I'd rank this above facility improvements.

sweet @$$ avatar - I might be slow but I also have not logged in for a cople of days...

I would rather have a NR player like Ryan Clady or Orlando Franklin or David Bakhtiari.

You can have a program that relies on "hidden talent" for every one of those guys you can look at the recruit list for those years and find bunches of guys who didn't pan out.

I'll take the program that fills up on 4*/high 3* talent and has some occassionaly not pan out.

The 2* guys are great, thats why Bama, LSU, Mich, Ohio State, USC, Oregon and the rest of the teams that normally win a lot put so much effort into finding them.

Franklin hasn't taken the recruiting services world by storm yet, in part because he didn't begin playing high school ball in the U.S. until this spring.

He was born in Jamaica and moved to Toronto when he was 6, beginning to play football there at age 9. After moving in with a cousin in Florida last year, he wasn't able to play football as a junior because he was academically ineligible.

Forget star ranking and all its gliter, get into the film room and evaluate players without the aid of some journalist and his ranking site.

Gliter my way of symbolizing false sense of acomplishment of being ranked a 4 star or 5 star recruit by a journo. Or the false sense of accomplishment fans get by the team signing a 4 or 5 star recruit.

How do you symbolize clueless fans that think filling out a depth chart with walk-ons qualifies as success?

HOw do you symbolize clueless fan that base recruiting entirely on jouranlist ranking sites. Big problem we lost Chris fox 4 star out of Colorado, we are in Big trouble.

Well considering the guy can't figure out how to spell glitter properly, this will probably be all for nothing, but here it goes.

Top 5 OT prospects for the 2012 draft:

There's a couple of 3*s in there (both 5.7) and a 5.7 rated DE, so I think it is important to note that OL are hard to project, but to take NR players over 4*s just because Ryan Clady and Nate Solder blossomed is pretty stupid. Not to mention, scout failing to rank Orlando Franklin doesn't really qualify him as an under the radar prospect.
