Will it change anything? Probably not, but it was easy to try it, and it is Friday before the holidays and I had some time.

Let me know your thoughts and i can edit it. If any of you are better writers than I am feel free to redraft and send to me.

I understand your POV. And you may be right. Maybe crippling the AD further to the point where media, alums and fans put a ton of pressure on the university administrators and politicians... and the AD loses so much money that the university feels the pinch... is the only way to save things. That we need to completely burn it down so we can rebuild the right way.

But I disagree. I've come down on the side that I need to give more support to the Athletic Department. My take is that the only way we are going to see what we want is if we have a strong AD that is financially independent from the university, including it being free of all debts. That we need to get facility upgrades done ourselves and fund additional tutors & academic support ourselves. Only when we have winning teams with good academic performance and an AD running far into the black will it have the muscles to get concessions from the university on admissions exceptions. Only then will it have the autonomy it needs to replace failing coaches or increase budgets without university meddling.

and while I disagree Buffnik I totally respect the position. We all want the same thing and are going with our gut instincts on how to get it.

petitions are so 2004, why don't you man up and get a billboard on I-36, even Raiders fans can put up enough money to do this and Oakland is a ****hole.

I am really torn on what the best approach is under the circumstances. However, there isn't much of a decision for me as I am not able to be much of a supporter anyway!

Big time college sports exist at universities that provide support through thick and thin. The difference between "major college" sports is that there is always fan support regardless of winning seasons or other BS that occurs within the program. This doesn't mean that the fans sit idle and be docile and complacent sheep, far from it.

But withholding money and cancelling tickets are pretty severe actions that just might cut off our nose to spite our face. If enough of that does occur, maybe the Mountain West Conference would be a better home for a "mid-major" CU Buffs athletic department.

I understand that many fans and supporters feel different, but this whole thing is like being a kid watching your parents get divorced. The whole situation sucks and nothing good is coming from it as the family is ripped apart and goes there separate ways.

I wish Hawkins will resign the moment his team becomes eliminated from bowl eligibility next year and save us the grief, money, and keep the FOOTBALL issue out of the POLITICIANS hands.

If the fans make every effort to burn what's left of the program to the ground it will be more likely that the powers-that-be will point to the lack of fan support as another reason not to bother with changes.

Withhold money, voice your displeasure, throw a tantrum, avoid the recruiting luncheon and boycott the games
... and the only message regents will get is "see, football isn't that important after all."

Or, conversely, continue to give money, stop bitching, go to the games, show nothing but support, and the administration will say "There are no consequences to keeping Hawkins, so why fire him?"

It works both ways. We've tried EVERYTHING to let the administration know that we're pissed. We've called. We've e-mailed. We've sent letters. We wore blue to the games. We've called radio shows. We've bitched on bulletin board sites. Nothing seems to be getting through to them. What's left? At some point, when your lover ignores you long enough, you have to realize that he/she doesn't love you as much as you love him/her. I've come to that conclusion. CU simply doesn't give a damn about me. Well, if they don't give a damn about me, why in the world should I give a damn about them? I'll still go to the games, but my emotional investment in this program has come to an end. With the emotional investment gone, the financial investment is pretty easy to give up as well.

I'm firmly in the wear blue camp.

I'll direct my $$$ to the programs w/in CU that I believe in.
My personal list includes Presidents Leadership Class and Cross Country/Track.

Right, and if the place is packed every saturday for home games and we keep losing, they'll say, "see, the fans are showing up despite losing".

The fans have been bent over enough.

Exactly. I will go to some games next year, but I will try to score discounted tickets. My support means jack **** to the AD, so they will not miss me.

Okay, the football as your lover goes only so far as a metaphor.
Because if you don't get what you want from your lover, and you've tried everything: roses, chocolate, walks on the beach, whatever you think will make her love you back ... then you have to give up at some point and move on.

What you're proposing is when "your lover ignores you long enough, you have to realize that he/she doesn't love you as much as you love him/her" so at that point ... you should bombard her with petitions, emails, late night phone calls, cut off all funding for anything fun, quit taking her places and telling her her hair looks nice...???

THAT isn't going to bring your lover back, and it's not going to make the decisionmakers sorry they didn't do what you wanted with the football program.

No, but after realizing that my love is unrequited, it's pretty easy for me to avoid taking her out to dinner ever again.

Up until now, I was pretty sure whe loved me as much as I loved her. When it became obvious that wasn't the case, it took a while for me to get over it, but the healing has begun. I may never love again, but you know what they say - 'tis better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all.

plus if you love something set it free, if it comes back to you it was meant to be. I think some people are ready to set CU football free, they will be back in 2011 when Hawk is gone.

The more I think about this, the billboard sign makes a lot of sense on the front end.
I really doubt that Di-stiff, Benson, Bohn and the rest of the clown posse would like driving by a billboard sign every day knowing that it targets them specifically and sends a very loud and clear message that would also draw local and national attention to their nitt-witt decisions. I doubt it would cost as much as what the Oakland fans paid. It's possible that some of the $$$ could be contributed by CU alums and businesses that have supported CU football over the years to help pay for the sign. Then pass the hat for any leftover $$$ required.
The bigger questions are, what would the sign say? And what would be the most strategic location? One side of the billboard or both sides? How long would the sign stay up? :smile2:

With all this talk about having an unrequited love affair with CU athletics, I've decided to go over to Mike Bohn's house tonight and blast my boombox until I win him back.

The football program is less than the University overall and that's what they are concentrating on now.
    Reality bites.
