I haven't watched an opening ceremony since the night I was on the edge of my seat to see if Ali would be able to light the Olympic flame without setting himself on fire.

The actual show part was pretty cool. Lasted around 90 minutes. Especially worth it if you like popculture.

Not as visually stunning as Beijing, of course, but I thought it was well-conceived, and entertaining.

I LOVED the joke about Kim Jong Il. Did anyone else catch that? Someone was talking about North Korea's golf prowess and Bob Costas more or less said that of the Dear Leader's 11 hole in one game, the shot that bounced off the windmill and clown's nose was the most impressive.

Maybe Nik would be okay putting this Olympic opening ceremony in the Bad movies with good soundtrack thread.

The opening ceremony of the event that celebrates the human spirit of excellence included Firestarter by The Prodigy? Seriously?

Man...without the TV commentary explaining all the symbolic crap in the first hour or so of this ceremony I would have had to be on drugs to try and make sense of any of it in my head

I didn't watch it. Did they really use Bieber music as someone joked earlier? I can't imagine watching a 3-hour fashion show set to Bieber.

Eh, it was alright. Some stuff I enjoyed, some stuff trying too hard to show this "new" Britain. (For instance, the whole NHS thing was rubbish)

Parts of it were a direct slap in the face for Cameron and his Tory government. To quote a parliament member on twitter "leftist multi cultural crap".

The NHS stuff made them look like cold war era soviets.

The whole thing was weird. I like the visitors found this page by searching for: terms.

NHS stuff was weird, very weird. Add in the Merry Poppins' fighting monsters and it got weirder.

Maybe when we do one next, we could have a Social Security themed one...

Parts of the opening ceremony borrowed heavily from Pink Floyd, right down to the smoke stacks, mindless industrial era brit zombies marching en mass, orphanage/mental hospital beds, helicopter over head and even Gilmore's guitar work. The olympic rings were a poor substitute for the flying pig.

I hear if you watch the opening ceremony while listening to The Wizard of Oz, it lines up perfectly....

Did anyone lick blotter paper before Captain Hook was vanquished by the Mary Poppins invasion?

Even weirder considering the NHS is essentially the ****tiest national health system you can find in Western Europe. Not exactly the envy of the world, by any means.
