Other hoops games - week three

Duke would be in serious trouble tonight against Yale if the usual Krzyzewski shenanigans weren't taking place: 22 ft's to 2...and rising.

UConn looked really good tonight. 84-70 win vs Michigan. Watch out for the Huskies come tourney time.

Kansas has too much for #19 Vanderbilt and is about to close them out.

So odd to watch Cuse and UConn battling it out with no impact on Big East standings.

Still can't wrap my head around Syracuse, Notre Dame and Louisville visiting town for ACC games. It's fun and new, but the round robin 9 team ACC bloodbath was something I'll always miss...even if it resulted in unkind records. And then there's Boston College, the complete snoozer the ACC just didn't need. BC being in the ACC just sucks. The ACC didn't need a Wake Forest part deux.

17 Notre Dame falls to Monmouth 70-68. That's an embarrassing one. Monmouth has already knocked off UCLA, though.

Wichita State just went down to Alabama. Their early season struggles really hurts the Missouri Valley Conference. RPI of everyone sinks with them not getting quality wins and raising everyone. Could very well be a 1-bid league this year despite Northern Iowa and Southern Illinois both being pretty damn good this season.

#18 UConn and #10 Gonzaga going down to the wire in a great game on ESPN right now.

Wichita State falls to Alabama. Tide are considered about the 14th best team in the SEC. These injuries are a killer for Wichita -- a team that has to rely on a good OOC resume.

Beat me to it. Can't have OOC losses like this as an MVC squad, injuries or not.

UTEP is now 5-0 after taking down a previously undefeated (and really good) Southern Illinois squad. UTEP is where former USC HC Tim "Money Envelope" Floyd and former Oregon PG Domic Artis landed.

They play at Wazzu in a couple weeks. Will teach us a lot about the Cougs.

Off topic, but speaking of that forgotten corner of the country (and UTEP's rival): someone needs to grab New Mexico State. That's a good program being left to rot. Easily the biggest loser of basketball realignment. NMSU has no business being in a conference with the likes of UT-Rio Grande Valley and Utah Valley. WCC, Sun Belt (who rejected a bid for NMSU to subsidize being a full member), MWC, C-USA...someone is missing out on what NMSU hoops offers.

#15 Miami just did the quintessential Miami hoops act of following up huge wins with a hungover loss to Northeastern. Granted, this Northeastern side may well Dance.

#15 Miami couldn't handle success. Just went down to Northeastern. Not sure what to make of them. Was it just a hot week for them? Was today's result just a blip? Hard to know.

If they stay healthy, they'll be in the upper-tier of the ACC (like 4-6) with a winning ACC record and will make March Madness. Top 15 was a stretch, but Miami does this sort of thing. They've got some big wins in them with a couple puzzling losses. Northeastern could well win the CAA. too.

It's funny seeing other boards and how differently fans react to conference rivals losing. We Pac folks tend to be way more into "win one for the conference" than certain others. We do so out of necessity, I suppose, as we know we can be the power conference that gets ****ed with 2 bids instead of generously handed 8.

West Virginia is one sneaky good team. Destroying SDSU tonight. Going to be an interesting clash of styles when they meet Virginia. WVU press and steal against a UVA squad that doesn't turn the ball over.

Hokies respond to a butt whooping yesterday by beating UAB in OT. Good day for the VT.

VT is better than Boston College. The problem for VT is teams like Wake Forest and Georgia Tech look improved. I do not envy trying to get out of the basement in this conference.

The injuries have really piled up for Wichita State and this season is turning into a nightmare.

Trail Iowa by a score of 51-26 about 5 minutes into the 2nd half. Let's all have a moment of silence for @ShockerHoops 's liver.

That sucks ... I like that guy.

Don't be a stranger Shocker ... we Buffs fans can help you through any hard times to come. We've had plenty of experience with that kind of thing.

The flip side is if they're healthy by March they still likely Dance. Could make for an interesting case.

Looking forward to the 8pm game between undefeateds -- Michigan State vs Providence. Two of the best players in college hoops facing off with Dunn & Valentine going at each other.

Arizona fans must consider themselves pretty lucky to be at an event with such big programs and see it live after their middleweight game earlier

In other news, Notre Dame falls to Alabama 74-73 (Rough week for the Irish. They're not a Top 25 team right now, but I could see them catching on as the season progresses). Boston College lost to 0-7 Santa Clara 62-45. It's time to send BC to the America East.

bammer has turned things around a bit since that blow out loss.

SEC seems to have a vast middle. This Bama side was picked 13th in the conference by the media. Seems the SEC is basically this:

Kentucky is the usual power

Vandy, Texas A&M and LSU are decent (although LSU was overhyped)

Missouri is absolutely horrid

Take the remaining 9 teams and shake them up however you like. Hopefully Auburn can take advantage and be a road win of decent value for us. Pearl will deliver some momentum.

The Sparty beat goes on. They've got Louisville visiting next for the ACC/B1G Challenge. L'ville is 5-0 but completely untested.

Missouri is absolutely horrid

Sad that they got caught in the post-Frank Haith hangover. Went the ultra-safe route and hired the winningest lower division coach in the region they could find who would keep the program's image squeaky clean but I don't think it will bode well for their recruiting. Mike Anderson leaving years ago seems to have driven both Mizzou and Arkansas to mediocrity. The grass isn't always greener.

This might be happening at the worst time for Missouri too -- the SEC is awash in cash and there are signs it's going to carry over to hoops and become a tougher conference. Mizzou should be a top SEC hoops program, but climbing back up may not be the cakewalk the SEC has traditionally been for much longer.
