    Okay guys,

    Woody likes the following

    1. Tosh Lupoi
    2. Brent Venables
    3. Kirby Smart
    4. Dave Logan

What say you? What are your top 4 picks and why?

    I like:

    1. Jon Embree - Black and gold guy who knows California and has worked in the NFL and for a big time BCS program
    2. Brent Venables - OU defense under stoops, BCS experience at big program and could recruit Texas
    3. Kirby Smart - Alabama and Nick Saban nuff said
    4. Eric Bienemy- Same reasons as number 1 but also has the fire and charisma, good recruiter.

Only requests - No Dave Logan as Head Coach - Sorry guys, would love to have him as an assistant but don't think you can go from High School to BCS Head coach in one step. No Troy Calhoun or mid major head coach- Again I know this will piss some people here off but going from having a bunch of highly motivated cadets willing to work hard in a MWC to the Pac-12 with "civilian" atheletes is too big of a stretch for a program as desperate as we are. If you notice I left coach Mac off the list because I still don't think the rumors are true. Okay what do you guys have?

Venables doesn't do a lot for me. not sure why. does the conference move affect BV as a candidate? any talk of Logan has to be prefaced by a year or 2 as OC somewhere.....you don't go from HS coach and First Bank commercials to HMFiC at a BCS program.

I would support an Embree hire, but methinks we already cashed in our Mac nostalgia hire with Barney.

What's wrong with the coach we have now? He's awesome!

Well, I like the Mac interim/short term option as choice numero uno.

    After that I'd say:

    2. Mike Belotti

    3. Al Golden

    4. A top Pac 10 OC or DC.

Woody needs to get over the Dave Logan love fest.

I like Venables out of his list.

I'm not sold on Bienemy as a first time HC to repair all Hawkins damage. I think Embree has missed his window. Looking back i wish they would have hired him over Hawkins.

I really think CU needs to look at canidates that have had a proven track record in large conferences at the coordinator level.

Hawkins, never a coordinator. Helfrich, first time OC. Kiesau, first time OC.

no more learning on the job types. one thing i like about Venables, he does like to bring the heat on 3rd down. you watch OU play, they send people every time on 3rd down.

I've never heard of Tosh Lupoi until reading Woody's article. IMHO he not head coach material yet but maybe as OC ?

Venebles would be fine, but he's a nuclear meltdown waiting to happen.

I still say take a hard look at Larry Fedora. He did wonders at Okie State as OC (with Colorado native Zac Robinson) and would bring an interesting approach to Boulder. Plus he's not a disaster in front of the media.

I really like the idea of a BCS OC or DC who would bring in some top notch assistants. I can go for an OC or a DC from a non BCS school, but not a head coach

dude, i'm with you on Fedora. while i prefer a badass DC type, i LOVED Fedora's O at O-State. Venables lives up the street from my mom/step-dad in NW Norman, and it's a nice crib. guy might be taking a paycut to CU.

I'm curious about the Lupoi choice at #1. DL coach at Cal for just 3 years, and he was a player there only 5 years ago. Very young and no coordinator experience. Pluses would be that he knows the Pac 10 and he was Rivals recruiter of the year last year...impressive for a young coach, but I'd maybe prefer if he was a DC first.

What's the deal with Al Golden, people really seem to like him for turning Temple around, but it's still Temple. And I remember the UVA defenses being decent but not spectacular...someone enlighten me on the appeal.

Would love to see Logan come in as an assistant. I believe he has a chance to be a good head coach some day, but would not want to roll the dice on it now. He also would be a powerful force for in state recruiting.

I just hope the discussion on who should be our new HC becomes a reality-based discussion within the next 6 months.

I would support Fedora, has a lot of the criteria I would be looking for, BCS Coordinator Experience, HC experience, has recruited Texas heavily in his OSU days. As long as he brought in an aggressive DC to go with his aggressive Offense style, I'd be all over it.

Edit: Looking through his bio, he also has ties to Florida. Another notch on the positives.

Who do you like and who do you think we could get right now? I think we have a salary range of 1-1.5 million.

Lupoi and Smart would be good choices atlhough OKC's comment about Venables being a potential meltdown is a bit of a concern. Lupoi may be on his way to being a head coach in a few years but it sounds like too much of a rush with him, and Logan simply doesn't have any experience at the college level.

I'd like to see Bud Foster get a look and even with the $1 million annuity VT will pay him if he stays there for 5 years, the 1-1.5 million range would still amount to a fairly substantial increase for him.

Cool, I think there are some good candidates out there and I could be down with Bud Foster. I'm just excited that their is a chance that we could be getting a new coach after this season. This and the PAC 10 move are the most interesting and exciting thing to happen to CU football since the 2001 Big XII championship. Finally some positive stuff

I will never understand the Dave Logan argument. It's brought up every time there's a coaching search at CU. It was even brought up when Neuhisel was hired. There's an inescapable truth that cannot be argued when the subject comes up - Gerry Faust. Gerry Faust was Logan x 100 in Ohio High School Football. He was a complete and total failure as a big time college football coach. The exact same thing would happen to Logan here. If, as everybody seems to think, Logan really wants the job, he'll HAVE to take a job as an OC or position coach first and work his way up the ladder. That's the way it works. Sorry Dave, if you don't like that. There are dozens of other guys who do it the right way and don't expect special treatment.

Hold on just a gosh darn minute. So he's co-opted all these phrases now? Nobody can use them without being associated with him?

I just write it off as the media playing up another media member within their circle. As for Logan himself, I've heard him address the question in the past and got the impression that he never felt as though he was a serious candidate, if one at all. And even if he was given serious consideration, I'm not so sure he'd even be interested because it would mean him giving up his Broncos play-by-play gig, among other things.

It's easy for a local media guy to say "Logan". But there's no way any of them would actually give Logan serious consideration if in a position to do so instead of just being a fish wrap hack.

If Logan wanted the CU job, he needs a college job first. Like what Briles did. Go coach Northern Colorado for a few years, win big, and then get hired at CU.

He is the media darling...I don't think he would recruit Colorado as well as some think - there are a lot of CO HS coaches who do not like the recruiting that Logan does. I am reminded when the CSU job was open after Lubbick was forced out. Joe and Irv has the CSU AD on the phone and asked him if Dave Logan was a candidate - his response was " You have to be kidding me, right?!" Joe and Irv were really taken aback but it certainly killed the Dave Logan discussion.

I certainly do not want to hire a guy who has no college coaching experience. Logan would not be a candidate at any Division 1 school other than CU because of the local media.

Wasn't the Sandman in the Spiderman movies played by Brent Venables? The resemblence is striking.

Tosh Lupoi looks a little bit like a re-incarnation of the young Tom Landry, so he's got that going for him. But would Lupoi wear the fedora?

The rumor down here is that's a big reason he didn't get the KSU job when Prince did -- too volatile of a person mentally. Basically, the gist seems to be "Great coordinator, but NOT someone you want leading a program." I think that's why he's been at OU so long now. As it is now, he freaks out on the sidelines during games. He might go Woody Hayes someday. Just not what I'd want here.

I hope Fedora does just well enough this year to get noticed -- by us and not many more. He's a steal IMO.

I worry about a young coach like Lupoi having the coaching relationships necessary to attract a great staff to a place that only offers 1-year assistant contracts.

Logan said on his radio show he would take it if offered. It is his dream job.
