Going into next season the Buffs are still going to be weak at some positions - I think that several of the incoming Freshmen are going to be playing in 2012 especially on defense and the Tight End position. That means the Buffs may have more talent on the field than last year but are going to suffer from inexperience. One way to mitigate some of this is for some of the existing players to step up their performance a notch or two.

Nick Kasa - big things were expected out him coming out of HS but for a variety of reasons his promise has not been realized yet. I would like to see him have a big year at Tight End - he has the athletic ability but does not have much experience at the position. This is a position of need for the team and if someone steps up they will get the opportunity.

Ryan Dannewitz - Well regarded coming out of HS, he has contributed but needs to start being more dominating. Another Senior that could seize a leadership opportunity.

Jack Harris - While we are on the Oline, it would be nice if Harris could be injury free going into the fall. The coaches have been high on his ability but injuries have undermined his contributions.

DaVaughn Thornton - DaVaughn has always been an intriguing player to me, if you watch him in scrimmage he is no doubt a good athlete but seems to be a little light for tight end and also has had drops in key situations. I think he can contribute if he steps it up. I would like to see him as a slot receiver - he would be tough to cover for a linebacker.

Jarrod Darden - Yes he is still on the team, he was well regarded out HS but has not been evident after 3 years in the program. Time for him to make himself known...just want to see something out of him.

Josh Moten - Another good athlete who seems to be uncomfortable in his position. He seemed to man up after being suspended - first player to be reinstated. Would be really nice if he could be a solid contributor as a DB.

Quarterback - No names here just a big need. CU needs someone to step it up here. Connor Woods or Nick Hirschman seem to have the lead at this time but have not seen either one of them very much. But CU desperately needs better QB play. CU's drive efficiency was horrible last year and needs to improve. If someone could step into this position and play well - I think everyone knows what it would mean.

These are just a few and there are some others that could make a difference. Ray Polk has been a starter but I would like to see him become an all-conference caliber safety - he has the athletic talent he just has to put it together.

I agree in regards to Kasa, Dannewitz, and Darden. I think that Kasa has the tools and the coach to make it happen in Embree. I know that there are openings at the wr position behind P. Rich, and I would love Darden to come out of his shell, but I just don't think that light is coming on... I think we will see Thorton and Spruce emerge as the two main guys behind P. Rich, with a true frosh possibly making an impact too.

After watching the year of the tall athletic TE in the NFL, I have to hope that Kasa could be made into a target that defenses fear. I remeber Kasa ran track back in HS, and was a 100 meter sprint guy. If he gets back down to 255 and has his speed back to his track days he could create some great miss matches for a D. Too fast for a LB, and too tall for a S. I am not holding my breath for this to happen, but he does have the right coach and is in the right system to make this happen in 1 year.

I completely agree about Kasa. If, and its a big if, he can get a decent grasp of the offense, he might be able to open up the middle of the field. Also, he would undoubtedly become the go to target in the red zone. If Kasa gets to ~35 catches i think it will be a major accomplishment.

I'd like to see Pericak light it up next year.

We really need Kasa and Slavin to step up. I expect Austin Ray to come in and play as a true freshman, but we need the two veterans to carry the load.

Dannewitz is never going to be a guy that dominates at this level, especially if he stays at RT. I would settle for him being mediocre as a senior (if he sees the field).

Agree on Harris. Our line gets better in a hurry if he is able to stay healthy at RT. He could be the breakout star of the entire team.

Darden is just not cut out for this level. Hopefully he proves me wrong, but I do not see him ever making a meaningful contribution at CU.

I would love to see Polk finally take a big step this year, both from a level of play standpoint and a leadership standpoint. We're going to have a very young secondary and he needs to take control of that group beginning in the spring.

I'm hopeful Kasa can blossom as a TE, but it's hard for me to expect too much considering he's so new to the position. If he had 3 years left and could develop I'd be excited for him, but a position change this late in his career doesn't give me a lot of confidence. The lack of TE depth will certainly give him some opportunities, so I hope he makes the most of it. At the very least, I'd like to see him in some goalline situations - maybe a tackle eligible?

Not to come off too harsh here, but this spring will be a great opportunity for some guys that are at positions that are really thin right now that will be bolstered by an infusion of true freshman in the fall. These guys have to show NOW that they are D1 players. If they can't show that, I can't imagine these guys sticking around for 2-3 more years if they get passed up by the newcomers.

    Now or never list:

    Poston - DT
    Moten - CB
    Slavin - TE
    Allen - TE
    Vigo - DB
    Williams - LB
    Grossnickel - P
    Darden - WR
JJ Goodson - ? (only has 1 year here, but 3 freshmen coming in and he is NOT going to play CB ever again). If he was our answer for the return game, we'd have seen that. 3 RB's coming in tells me something here.

All of these guys have been on campus for at least 2 years and all are at positions where we are really thin. They also all have at least 2 years of eligibility left, meaning they could transfer and get some PT at a lower division. Many could transfer and still have 3 years left. We got like 10 scholarships next year as things sit and I don't see JE playing nice here (just sayin').

These are the guys that will either step up or be passed by True Freshman this fall.

With Darden's height, I expected him to be a possession type match up nightmare. At 6'5" he could be a problem for DB's. I always wondered why it wasn't working for him. Maybe he surprises us all this year.

The few times I have seen him, he looked incredibly stiff running routes. If you look at him just standing, he looks every bit the part of a BCS-level WR.

If you compared him to Toney Clemons (another guy who looked the part just standing) once the action started, there was no contest.

Guys who need to step up and be effective Pac-12 starters:

    Connor Wood
    Alex Lewis
    Kyle Slavin
    Tony Jones
    Some WR opposite Richardson
    Nate Bonsu
    Chidera Uzo-Diribe
Brady Daigh and/or Woodson Greer until Rippy is back to 100%
    Some CB opposite Henderson
    Some S opposite Polk

The last 2 are huge. Ideally a CB steps up and Orms can play safety.

I want to see how Juda parker has improved, and nelson spruce. Also, can Kasa and Thornton be viable Te's for this season. Harrington and bell should be an interesting watch.

Thornton will not be playing TE. Not big enough and can't keep weight on.
