Here is a snippet from this article: http://www.denverpost.com/cu/ci_13346430

After an embarrassing loss at Toledo, Colorado football players knew they would have a hostile greeting when they returned home, but maybe they didn't know the extent of it.

    They do now.

"I have this geology class," senior linebacker and captain Marcus Burton said Tuesday, "and the professor's like, 'You people may think this class is boring. We're just talking about rocks. But it's no more boring than both the CU games. Marcus, you're a captain. Can you tell us about that?'

"He calls me out on the floor. I wanted to leave, but I didn't. I'm in the class to learn. I'm not there to talk about football."

And who says the academia isn't into football? Too bad we can't get them to go after Hawk and expect the same kind of results the rest of our educators provide.

Weak move by the professor. You're there to teach not to embarrass your students in class.

Very inappropriate. Glad it's printed in the paper. That prof should get some flak.

Yeah, I agree it isn't really the place and I am sure it didn't go down quite like how it is reported in the story, but it is still good to know that there is some emotion left up there. Maybe we should let the Geology prof do some coaching. I am willing to bet he could fire the team up more than the Hack could.

We don't know how the comment was made. It might have been a joke, albeit a very poorly timed and worded one. Remember, we're dealing with academics here. They're not exactly known for their senses of humor.

He might've been talking in class or something and that was the professor's way of getting his attention..

I did have a geology teacher in my senior year, so 2.5 years ago, that would freak when people's phones went off or when they talked in class. It might've been the same guy.

it was probably just an inartfully executed joke. football players are big men on campus (at least they were a couple decades ago, even at Boulder), so sometimes the profs use them to try to "relate" to the students.

i doubt he meant it in a mean-spirited way. it goes the other way too, we've all seen players get singled out for praise after a good game, right?

I don't think I ever saw a football player singled out for being a football player in any of my classes at CU.

really? then maybe it is different than a few decades ago. imagine that! :smile2:

a couple examples i can remember--- i had a stats class with an o-linemen and he aced every freaking quiz, every freaking test, everything. the prof at one point singled him out and talked about how well-rounded he was for being awesome at basically everything.

another time, i was in a class with a player who had been knocked out of a game with a concussion a couple days before and the prof made a joke about whether the guy was ok. it wasn't totally mean...

Yeah, I remember a standing O in one of my classes after Thanksgiving in 2001. I used to make fun of my players all the time with stuff like that, good and bad.

It really does all depend on the situation... In my experience with Geology classes, none was over 50 people in a class, so they probably had at least a little relationship.

Most college professors epic fail when they try to work a football reference into their lecture. Marcus is busting his ass in practice and on the field, not to mention the classes he has to study for when he's not being consumed by football. I guarantee he's one of the most fired up players in the locker room, and being a captain probably takes more responsibility for the losses on himself than he should. And the geology professor rewards him for that effort by dealing him the punk card. Not cool.

It doesn't matter whether the Prof was kidding or not, it matters how the player took it. Obviously was embarassed by the quote he made. They're still kids, still trying to make it. Not cool to single anyone out for the efforts of many, IMO.

Definitely inappropriate, to the point he should be admonished in a very public way - the punishment should fit the crime. Remind me of the CU public flogging policy?

Props to Marcus for not blowing a gasket or mouthing off in response. It would be hard for me not to respond, but we all know the Post would have been all over it if he had.

Keep working Marcus, you're a stud.

I makes me laugh sometimes how quick people are around here to go on the offensive against the smallest thing. He did not single out the player, he single out the team to a player of that team. Do the democrats on this board feel singled out when people make comments about republicans and vice versa? chill out...he is a big boy and it is motivation. He is in the public eye as a football player and, as a member of the team, I am sure he took it as i am sure it was meant. a joke with some truth to it and motivational material to step it up. I am sure he is not all wrapped up in it like some of you guys get...and it was said to him. I have heard several players on here single out this team as boring, inept, and unmotivated (myself included). I am sure that there are some current players that check this stuff out...so, you are just as guilty. Play hard and win, get praise...look like **** and lose, accept the ridicule. it's high profile sports...the nature of the beast.

I guess we live in a society where no one, even young adults cant take a joke anymore.
Comon, the prof. was obviously kidding. I see nothing wrong with his goof.
This is an example of PC run amock.

Bulls***. It's one thing if he poked fun privately, but to call him out in front of an entire class is a dick move.

If I'm busting my ass everyday trying to win games, then have to spend hours studying - I don't want to hear some clown who has never played a down of football ask me why our team is so boring.
Stick to pebbles and hot lava d-bag, you're paid to teach not coach.

ABSOLUTELY AGREED. We think these kids are coddled, and, to a certain degree, they are. They have a chance at the big time, get a hell of a lot of attention (big man on campus, lots of girls, whatever), but, they work their nuts off. In addition to what other students are putting in, these guys go on the road, practice nearly every day, watch film, are subject to immense pressure/criticism/etc. They dont need some ****ing guy who beats off over pebbles to give them **** in class when its a miracle theyre in class in the first place. Dudes probably just there because it's called Boulder and he got a hard on for a rock.

And yet there are people on this website doing the same thing. He called out the team, not him individually. His assessment of the games seems pretty accurate to me...they looked bad, and he called out THE TEAM for looking bad. BJ was just a representative of that team available at the time of the comment. nuff said.
