JE pulls 2 offers. I't amazing to me that he has the confidence he can 'dump' these 2, 'cause he knows he'll get better players. How good is/was Farrow.

Feel bad for the kids willing to commit to CU while we were down

While I hate to see this, and I don't like pulling schollies from commits, Embree is showing he has a very clear picture of what he wants and is moving forward with it. Might as well yank the bandaid off right now instead of the slow removal.

I like the move! A no nonsense decisive approach which is a great qualilty of a leader. Kids do this to schools all the time by changing their minds at the last minute leaving said school without a player to fill a needed position. I trust Embree's ability to evalulate talent much more than Hawks seeing that Embree actually played and coached in the NFL. We don't need another QB with Tyler coming into his senior year, Hirshmann to back him up and Brock coming next year and as far as RB goes we need a bigger back to offset our small guys and if there is anybody that can evaluate this position its EB. We have enough depth at these positions already, lets use the scholarships we have available to fill the positions we need.

I wouldn't mind seeing Hirshman unseat Hansen if the starting role.

While it certainly sucks for the players, in the long run, it will be better for everybody involved. They have plenty of time to re-open the recruiting process and land in a place where they'll be able to make a difference. It would be different, in my mind, if Embree did this a week before NOI day.

As I stated in another thread, if a kid doesn't fit the plans of the new staff it is probably better for the kid and the school to cut the ties now. Even if you honor the commitment the kid isn't going to get a fair shot at contributing. Better to let him find a place where he is wanted and can be a part of what the team is doing and at the same time use his schollie for someone who is a better fit here.

What I like is that JE understands the need for corners over converting a safety to play corner. Something Hawk never seemed to understand.

Coach has to do what he thinks is best for the program so I trust his judgement. My biggest worry in these situations is if it burns bridges with these kid's coaches, although I'm sure that is factored into these decisions.

they can still pursue a future scholarship as a walk-on; it is part of the process in any major administrative transition. i believe that barnett honored the scholarship for some of slick's players against his better judgement and we all know how that worked out...

This is the only time pulling scholarships is ok. Coaching change. It's still not good, but credit to him for doing it a week after being hired and not stringing these kids out. I do feel bad for them though, hopefully they land on their feet.

It is rather common to pull kids' scholarships during a coaching change, so I don't think it'll necessarily burn bridges with the coaches. However, i'm sure if Sherry is friends with some bad ass D-Tackle that's a junior, our odds of getting him just dropped a bit.

All in all, this is a benefit to CU, and I'm in support of whatever benefits CU. Let's go land some big names!

Mike Bohn had his scholly pulled by Chuck Fairbanks.

It happens. It's unfortunate, but the timing on this is very appropriate. At least these kids will have a chance to catch on with other programs. NOI day is still a long way away.

Can we pull his contract? I kid, I kid...sort of...

I have no problem with it, why bring a kid here you don't want? So he can sit for four to five years?

Let's not get too carried away here. I am sure Brown had a hand in that. Brown recruited every DB on the team (he's been gone less than a year) other than perhaps Terrell. His hands are on the current CB situation and he better find some guys who can play right away. I seriously doubt that Embree made that call on his own.

I don't mind this, it is a new coaching staff who is very strong in recruiting and looks to have a definite directional goal. They gave the kids as much time as possible to find alternatives; my brother-in-law had his schollie pulled by CSU on NSD eve, by the HC who recruited him, and had no chance to find a D1 school as he was from a 1A school that nobody outside of CO had ever heard about in the late 70s.

I am sure that is tough on everyone. Embree did not like doing it but sometimes tough decisions need to be made. This transition period is the only time it will be happening. Lets face it, over the past few years CU was offering players that other BCS programs were not. The approach under the previous regime was one of going after the outliers - kids who for one reason or another were not getting much attention. That has to change. Yes there are great finds at times in the under recruited players (Rodney Stewart) but you cannot make a living recruiting that way. Get several top 25 classes in here and with good coaching CU will be a force.

I always thought D II did an OK job at recruiting. CU does not lack talent. They lack depth, and certain positions may be lacking talent, but there is talent on the roster.

D II seemed to recruit around the edges and pick up guys late in the process who were on other team's B list or had some issue (i.e,.grades or injuries). That approach probably worked well at Boise, where most of the season you played WAC weenies. But CU was getting outmanned too often by their conference foes (and some inexcusable beatdowns by chump teams). D II brought in some studs, but filled his calsses with way too many sleepers who had a shiny lunchpail and a twinkle in their eye as their claim too fame...

A jerk would have gone out and recruited better players FIRST, and then pulled the schollies -likely leaving those kids in a bad position.

Maybe sounds silly, but Embree showed some courage and confidence, doing this early. Imagine (cause it isn't gonna happen) that recruiting didn't go well or we ended up 2 players short. JE would look foolish and take a lot of heat. I feel bad, esp for the one who said he was excited about playing for JE and EB, but it was a little gutsy and, if it had to be done, he did it the right way.

I share the concern somebody else mentioned - is this HS coach (and his buddies in the buisness) ever going to let another kid come to CU? The answer, maybe, is that JE called and explained to the coach. Hope so.

    Go Buffs!

In all likelihood no, unless CU is the only BCS offer one of his kids gets. Hurst is also in the Dallas-Ft Worth area Embo better know what he's doing. Could end up bad for Tejas recruiting, but we don't recruit well there anyway.

By all accounts, the kid (the RB) didn't even take any more visits after his trip here. In fact, we were the only trip and he took that in October so he has 4 more officials. He said he didn't want to take any more or would waiver b/c he sticks to his word.

At the end of the day, Embo understands it's all about W and Ls. Still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth though.

I'm sure you've all heard Embree's recruiting philosophy. Well, part of his philosophy. "It isn't the kids you don't get that hurt you. Its the kids you do get who never play that hurts you." Or something like that. He obviously believed these two kids would not play at CU. So, that brings something to mind. If he can't fill out his available scolarships with "kids that will play," will he leave any scholarships unfilled? Or does he believe, and he must, that he can fill up the available slots with "players?"

I'm all for pulling the offer. D2 spent way to many scholarships on players that had no business playing D1 football.

This year is all but wasted in recruiting anyway. It does no good to chase marginal players just to fill out a class. I would prefer that we have a small class this year, and go into next year and try to get a class of 25 kids that are all recruited by the new staff.

Embree called the kid in person and explained the situation. He has the guts to go after kids that can fill positions that we need. I'd rather fill that slot with a 3 star CB than a 3 star RB in Fallow who is basically the same size and build as the guys we already have. The HS coach should understand the way college football works. This happened after a HC change and the kid still has 2 months until national signing day to get other offers. If the HS coach and kid are butt hurt over it then fine, they don't have the killer instinct we want around here at CU. Its a cut throat business and the sooner this trophy generation of kids find that out the better off they will be. If it hurts our chances at this ONE HS for future recruits so be it. I think most any other coach in the area would understand the reasoning for pulling the scholarship. There are 300 DI football players that come out of Texas every year. Pleanty of other HS to go around.

I agree to a point - BUT - it's way worse for the kid to uproot/decline other opportunities, come here and have expectations, and then receive no attention from the coaching staff because they never believed in him from the start. Wasting a college career would do way more long-term damage than a Dear John phone call with 2 months left for the kid to get in visits & obtain other offers. Best of luck to him.

If these kids are legitimate D1 talent, they'll have no issues getting other offers.

it's never an ideal situation and you hate to see a kid get excited about CU and all the good things it offers, but from JE's perspective....he's recruiting with a low market value "brand" right now (if you want to use that terminology)...a year from now, two years from now he certainly believes he'll be after and landing higher caliber players with an emboldened CU "market" value.
