It's hard not to be pretty stoked about the QB position going forward given the stable of 4* QBs we are building. I don't know about you guys but I was kind of shocked to read today in CUBuffs.com http://www.cubuffs.com//ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=600&ATCLID=205414872 that Embree is NOT planning to redshirt Dillon!

I had just assumed that Wood would likely start for the next few years, with Dillon redshirting this year. Assuming Wood did not lose his starting spot or get hurt, Wood would then have at least 2 years to start. Then Sefo would redshirt too ensuring that a long line of QBs selected one at a time in each class would always redshirt (barring injury) their first year, etc.

Am I the only one surprised to hear Dillon is not likely to redshirt? Does anyone think it is realistic Dillon would start or get significant playing time this year? If he does, that sounds like the staff is not very encouraged by Wood, or the potential for Hirsh or Webb if he comes if they are willing to burn Dillon's redshirt.

don't read too much into that. There has been some discussion regarding that quote in Dillon's recruitment thread. I believe it is just part of the Mantra right now... nobody's job is safe, and the frosh that are coming in will get looks at just about every position, including QB. They also promised Dillon a chance to play. Can't do that and then say the plan is to redshirt him.

    I think Snow nailed it.

If you ask Embree if he expects someone to redshirt, that's the same as asking him if his expectation for the guy is that he will be unable to compete this year. He'll never say "yes" unless, like he clarified, we're talking about a 250 OL or something.

I have a bad feeling that Webb (if he transfers in) will get the most starts over the next 2 yrs. I'm predicting he is more of a "gamer" than Wood or Hirschman. However, as sophomores, Wood/Hirschman have potential if they tighten things up and get to the point where they are playing with a lot of confidence...

FWIW, I liked Lifiau's tape WAY better than Dillon's who seems awkward to me. I hope Dillon proves me wrong, but I think he may be another Ballenger.

My guess is the next 2 yrs are going to be rough (I know, shocker) with Webb starting/struggling - ala the other little gamers: Mochetti, Hawkins, Hansen. Wood/Hirschman will get their chance(s) at some point.

If Lifiau doesn't get flipped by UW, then he is the first CU QB that appears to be a "gamer" and have NFL size in a long time. To finish my ridiculous prediction - when he starts for us in ~2 yrs will be when the program finally turns the corner.

When you say two years do you mean 2013 or 2014. Because 2013 needs to be the year we go to a bowl game if we don't go this year.

I really doubt Webb starts (hell its not even 100% that he's transferring here), his upside is limited and I don't think he'll know the playbook enough to start this fall. Dillon will challenge for the starting job in 2013 and Sefo will in 2014. I'll take any of them starting because that'll mean the best is on the field, and in the end, other than wins, I all I want. No more of the favoring players bull****.

2014. I was just throwing out a wild (and highly pessimistic) guess at what our QB situation is going to be like over the next couple of yrs. If Webb starts it means that Wood and Hirschman are really bad and nothing more than backup-quality QBs. Again I hope I'm wrong, but I think Dillon won't be ready to start for awhile if ever. Sefo is the first QB I've been hyped about in a long time. But like you, I hope any of the other guys step up and we make a bowl in 2013. Unfortunately, I think our bowl hopes for 2012 went up in smoke with Richardson's ACL.

I thought Wood looked fine at the Spring Game. He clearly has all the athletic tools. He just needs to grasp the playbook and calm down in the pocket a bit.

Why don't you think he will start ever? Because of his awkward film? That doesn't make much sense to me.

And attacking an opinion. His worries are valid, and his observations, while pessimistic, are understandable. I know you have a man crush on every Colorado player, but chill.

I'm not trying to attack it, I'm just having trouble understanding the conclusion he is jumping to with Dillon.

Coolio. I'm excited to see Dillon on campus. Word is that he is rapidly filling out and is already back from his shoulder surgery.

I'm just throwing out a far out prediction that is more about being hyped about a HS junior that may never enroll at CU than anything. If he does end up in Boulder then I think the timing for the turnaround matches up well for him. Really "know" the least about Wood and hope Embree is setting up the fall competition to light a fire underneath him. Webb as the starter is a worst case scenario. Don't want to bash Dillon, just trying to play scout.

If Dillon shows up looking like Brock Osweiler, I could be way off base.

You bring up good points and discussion and are obviously doing it in good faith (not trolling). No worries.

I love that we got Dillon, but again, recruiting, at some point, is still a numbers game and lots can go wrong. Some guys just don't work out. Dillon appears to have the mental and physical tools (despite looking awkward to some :wink2:), but that isn't a guarantee.

That said, now that you've called him awkward, he's gonna start as a true frosh and obliterate every single CU passing record except Cody's interception record. Good job!

He has. His recovery time for the surgery is pretty impressive as well.

You have a very good reason to be very excited about Sefo, I am, and I'm sure every Buff fan is very excited about him committing. Saying that, I don't think we should be sleeping on Dillon and I think Wood, Dillon, and Sefo will all give us very good years when they are under center. We haven't had a QB depth chart that will be this talented since the early 90's, and that's very exciting. They all are "gamers" IMO. Wood looked good in the spring game aside from a few overthrown deep balls but I liked his accuracy and decision making, and his ability to scramble is nice as well. Obviously, it's tough to take a sample size from that game with what the D had out there, but I think Wood is far ahead of #2, and will continue to be the #1 QB even when (or if) Webb comes in. Webb as a backup this year would be great IMO.

I guess is this is the million dollar question: If Dillon comes in and wins the job as a true freshman is that a good thing?

I envy you're optimism. I've just been beaten down by our history with QBs and can only allow myself to believe that 1 of the next few potential QBs will be legit and am trying to get in early with the Sefo prediction.

Hopefully you and others are right and Wood is the man and starts for 3 yrs, followed by Dillon, and finally by Sefo way down the line...

I don't think that is good at all. How many true freshman QB's have ever taken their team to a bowl game?

The difference b/w HS and Pac-12 competition (speed of play, depth of play book, size of players) is just too big for 90+% of Freshman QBs. If he wins it it means that Texas was right to bury Wood on the depth chart, it means that Webb didn't join or sucks more than we think or Hirsh and his head start on the system haven't helped him beat out a true frosh.

this is pretty much how I feel about it too. Most of the guys here seem pretty high on Wood right now and say he look good (not great or even very good), so on one side of the coin if Dillon comes in and starts he is already better than how Wood looks with the arm, maturity, and scrambling ability that Wood has and he also beat out Hirsh, who has experience with the playbook. So obviously you would think Dillon looks good and made quite an impression in such a short time. (I am leaving Webb out of this because we are not even sure he is coming)

One the other hand, that means we are rolling out with a true Freshman with zero college experience going against one of the greatest defensive lines ever seen (they got 30 or so sacks in a scrimmage) in CSU in his first game. It also means that our coaches might not be that great at evaluating QB talent.

Many Fans seem to think the team is set at QB (all the objections to recruiting Webb) but I do not think that is the case. The QB is so critical to offensive success that Embree and staff has to find the player that can best fill the position. Wood is doing all the right things but he is still very green since he has not played at the college level yet and I think the coaches were hoping he would use the spring to distance himself more from the competition.

Whoever can win the competition will be the starter and at this point that could be almost anybody. If Webb does come in I think he has an excellent chance of being the starter - no knowing the playbook is easily offset by having 20 some games as a starter at the Div 1 level.

I really wanted to see Wood come out of the spring as clearly defined starter but it did not happen so the competition is still wide open...if Dillion can show that he can do the job then he will be the starter.

Uhh what? Sorry but that does not work. If you have little knowledge of the playbook how are you going to run the offense?

That's not how I interpreted his post. I interpreted it meaning that having no knowledge of the playbook will be made up for by having game experience.
