Recruiting News - Olympic Sports

Per Rich Kern's volleyball site, CU has received another verbal for 2016 volleyball from Rachel Whipple, a 5'7" DS/L from Smokey Hill HS in Aurora, She was selected as first team All-Centennial League this past season. She evidently had previously been committed to VCU, according to the website of her club volleyball team. Welcome to the Buffs Rachel.

Always great to get confirmation from Rich Kern re volleyball commits! (See post #169 for 1st notice of Ms. Whipple committing to the Buffs, and a little more info (high school stats, etc.) on her.)

CU has now officially announced the last 2 of 4 known 2016 incoming volleyball players. (Article- http://www.cubuffs.com//ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=600&ATCLID=210794502 ).

The 2 are MB/OH/OPP (Middle Blocker/ Outside Hitter/ Opposite) Lillie Klemmer from Hawaii (see post #125 for more detail) and DS/ L (Defensive Specialist/ Libero) Rachel Whipple from Centennial CO (post #169).

Welcome and congrats once again to both for joining the Buffs!

Welcome Rachel and Lillie!

Do we know if the recruits Kritzka had signed are still coming to CU?

Thank you. I have noticed Spann tweeting with our women's athletes, both basketball and volleyball. Players seem to hang out together.

Re Lauren Dorrell, I know Coach Mahoney tweeted back in February he was able to go out to a signing ceremony/ party held for her, so assume she's still 100% a Buff. (Her party was right around the soccer signing period, so assume it may have been a combined event with other athletes, as I think she'd already formally signed back in November.)

Sounds like a couple nice miles today for incoming Buff distance runners Madie Boreman and Sage Hurta, as they come in 1-2 in their section at the prestigious New Balance Nationals Indoor. Congrats to both!

Assume the name will soon be known, but looks like soccer has received a new 2018 commit.

Aztec - Any further info on who this player is? I've looked at my usual on-line sources (Top Drawer Soccer), and haven't found anything. It's been a month since CU Soccer tweeted this and usually we'd know by now. Typically a commit sends TDS the information I think. I wonder if it's an international player and thus harder to do the detective work via social media, etc. BTW, thanks for being on top of all the Olympic sports recruiting...you do a fantastic job.

Nope- like you, haven't seen anything substantive(***), and my guess, like yours, would be that increases the chance it might be an international player. (I figure the players in the U.S. seem to be more into announcing their decisions in social media (and in English) and, even if they don't, their clubs like to let everyone know they've helped another player obtain a scholarship.)

(***Right around the time of the #CUin18 tweet, I did notice CU Soccer's twitter account started following a U-16 international player, but they no longer are. I did look quick in her twitter at the time and never saw anything indicating she had committed, so there was nothing near definitive enough to mention.)

I know that they have been and still are following several very highly rated international players on their Instagram account, and some top rated American players (some who are already commits). Two of our four current 2018 commits are TDS Top 150 players, and as we all know, often a zero or 3 star player turns out to be a TDS 4 star eventually, or turns out to be a top player even if not in the TDS database. The top national women's soccer programs always seem to have one or two zero or low star commits every year, some of whom often end up starting on a Top Ten ranked team before all is said and done. I look at the Instagram account fairly regularly and will report anything I find that might be of interest, although I don't like to mention names. Don't know if this is true, but I also guess/assume that sometimes a player or coach doesn't want to broadcast their interest on Twitter or Instagram until and unless they are committed to a school.

Per the below tweet (and also shown in Milesplit- http://www.milesplit.com/signings?year=2016&sortBy=&collegeSearch=university+of+colorado ), looks like men's Buff cross country/ track has a new commit in Colorado distance runner Paxton Smith from Highland Ranch's Mountain Vista High School.

Congrats and welcome to him joining the Buffs!

Times/ results-
Cross Country- http://www.athletic.net/CrossCountry/Athlete.aspx?AID=4751823 (Looks to have been shown good improvement throughout his high school career, improving from 74th to 17th to 5th in the 5A State Championship races from his sophomore through senior years, with his senior finish helping pace his team to a state championship.)
Track- http://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=4751823#/L0 (Assume he'll be looking for good finishes at the state meet later this semester, especially in the 3200M race where he finished 8th last year as a junior, and was the 3rd fastest non-senior finisher that race.)

Nothing against the international kids, who in a sport like soccer provide a great athletic, educational and cultural experience for the student-athlete AND his/her team mates, but I like the way that CU cross-country does it solely with American kids and still competes/wins national championships. Who could turn down running for the best coach in the country, and one of the best ever in collegiate running history?

Just to clarify, the two 2018 commits we have that are TDS Top 150 rated are currently shown as 3-star players but are certainly 4-star in reality and TDS will likely change them to 4-stars before they finish high school. Our other two 2018 commits so far are currently shown as no-stars, but I guarantee they will be 3- or 4- star before they graduate from H.S. They are both outstanding young players and had eye-catching high school Freshman seasons. TDS often gives 2- or 3- stars even to their Top 150 rated players for the younger classes and as they get older the number of stars increases, and again, there are plenty of players who have zero stars after their Freshman seasons, and 3-stars after their Senior seasons, who end-up playing and having great careers at even the best collegiate programs. This time last year one of our 2016 NLI sign-ees who will be joining the team in August had zero stars, and now has 4 going-in to her Senior H.S. season. And one of our other 2016 sign-ees who is a key player for the US U-18 National Team is 4-star rated by TDS now but is surely a 5-star in reality when compared to several of the other 5-star girls. I'm sure TDS does its best to rate players, but as far as the star designations go, it can be pretty subjective, just as it is with all college sports.

CU does have the best cross country coach in the country. I worked in a D3 academic sports department for a while and the track and cross country there (who had a decent D3 program) said Wetmore was the coach in the country that he looked up to and tried to emulate.

A couple of incoming men's track Buffs had BIG races yesterday in California at the "APU/Arroyo Meet of Champions Distance Classic". In the mile, at a ridiculously quick high school level race where 11 racers finished under 4:10, incoming Buff Connor Dunne won as noted in the below tweet with an impressive sub- 4:05 time. Another incoming Buff, Eduardo (Lalo) Herrera, came in 3rd in that same race, and then followed up less than 1-1/2 hours later with a win in the top 3200M race (with a solid 9:02.95 time).

Was just doing a (pretty random) Google search this Saturday morning, and, per a potential new source I found for commitments (https://www.fieldlevel.com/view-commitments/all/all/co), looks like volleyball MAY (???***) have received a new 2016 commitment a few days ago from Middle Blocker/ Outside Hitter Emily Crossley from Custer County High School in Westcliffe CO.

Assuming this is accurate, congrats and welcome to Ms. Crossley!

(***Couldn't find any confirmation via social media or other websites, and since fieldlevel.com is a new source I'm not sure how accurate it may be.)

Couldn't find height for her, but here are links to her stats-

Looks like we have the first known verbal commit for the incoming class of 2019 in any sport as, per the below tweet, midfielder Carley Farella, who hails from Westfield HS in New Jersey and the STEPS New Jersey club, has verbally committed to Buff lacrosse. Welcome and congrats to Ms. Farella!
(Based on the #sisteract in the tweet, and where she's from, assume she's the younger sister of 2017 verbal commit Haley.)

(CU commitment also being shown at https://lacrosserecruits.com/carley_farella .)

Now on RichKern : 2018 setter 5'10" Jenna Ewert from California commit to Colorado. She has been in the USA National Youth A1 training group so is probably pretty good.

Thanks so much. Was trying to find who Coach Mahoney was tweeting about, but wasn't having any luck.

Based on Maxpreps stats (http://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/jenna-ewert/vjE11i4LEeS00gAmVebEWg/gendersport/volleyball-stats.htm), looks like Ms. Ewert has been a solid all-around performer in high school. Per the Maxpreps' roster, she was also impressively already a captain as a sophomore. She must mainly be a setter in club so far, as it looks like she's mainly been a hitter so far in high school. (Her team had a senior all-conference setter, which might explain her playing as an outside hitter this and last year. Ms. Ewert was also named 1st team all-conference per http://www.eastbaytimes.com/brentwood/ci_29220438/all-bval-fall-teams .)

Kathryn Attar, a 2017 outside hitter who had verballed to CU VB a few months back, is no longer listed as a CU commit on the Rich Kern web site. She is not listed as committed anywhere right now so maybe she is re-considering her options in light of the changes here.

Guess with no NLI, CU can do that. Yes, it's brutal and I feel for her. Hope she finds a great school, just not one in the Pac 12

Just wanted to mention that, per Rich Kern, Ms. Attar has now committed to a liberal arts school in New Haven CT that has a pretty good reputation (I believe it's called Yale).

So, great to hear she DID find a great school.

Beat me to it, Aztec.

Tennis announces its 1st formal commit- welcome to Chloe Hule from Adelaide!
(She becomes the 3rd straight Aussie signed by the tennis team, as both of this year's Freshmen were from Melbourne.)

"
BOULDER – University of Colorado tennis coach Nicole Kenneally announced the signing of Chloe Hule to a National Letter of Intent on Monday. Hule joins the Buffaloes from Adelaide, South Australia, Australia, and is the first recruit to sign with CU for the 2016-17 academic year.

“I am excited for Chloe to be joining us in the fall,” Kenneally said. “Chloe is a great player with a wealth of international experience and along with that, she is a great girl who is going to fit right into our team culture. Chloe is a team player and will be a great addition for us on the court as well as off the court. She is ready to play, compete and win in the Pac-12 Conference. I am ready for August to arrive and for Chloe’s arrival.”

Hule is the highest-ranked Australian signed under Kenneally, as she has been ranked as high as No. 188 in the world among juniors, and 45th among females of all ages in Australia. She is a two-time representative for South Australia in the Pizzey Cup and has represented her home state in 12-and-under and 14-and-under national team championships. Hule has also been a member of the Australian/Asian Pacific League for five years and was a member of the Australian 16-and-under American Travel Team when she was 15.

Hule was drawn to CU for the coaching staff, the academic prestige of the university, and the beauty of Boulder.

Good additions by Sanchez. I'm far from a soccer expert, but the general consensus (and eyeball test) was that this team really needed to shore up some issues controlling the middle of the field.
