Recruiting Positional Needs (based on graduation)

Exactly. It has never made sense to me. Which likely means the info that's been put out isn't solid because we can assume that the coaches wouldn't intentionally do something illogically stupid.
...you do recall the time CU sent the punter out for a free kick after a score, right?

I had managed to purge that from my memory. But solid point. No decisions made by Neinas should be given ongoing credibility.

A kicker is often the difference between winning and losing a game. Remember NU in 1999?
FIFY. I was immune to the pain of losing by the time we got to that Cal game; that NU loss hurt.

The fact that Diego won the FG job and Graham was the Kickoff specialist seems rather counter to the reasoning laid out above.
I know what you mean, Idk how a guy that learned under Parcels hasn't fixed it? Should be kicker heaven.

Kickers are the most ignored guys on the team until they're needed.

That's how you go from losing they NU game in 1999 to recruiting Mason Crosby. It's a matter of priorities. Most coaches simply don't put adequate priority on special teams. I'm afraid MM falls squarely into that category as well. That might be my biggest issue with MM.

That kick was ****ing good.

The thing with Crosby is that we sort of fell into him. He came up for a summer camp before his junior year in HS. Barnett watched him drilling 40-50 yard field goals from the grass (most HS kickers use a tee, even for field goals), and offered him a scholarship on the spot.

The coaches obviously stayed on him the next two years, but it wasn't like they had prioritized recruiting great kickers as much as it was that he sort of fell into their laps.

It hurt for years, both emotionally and with what it did to the program. Hawkins banked everything on recruiting in December. No bowl, no practices, the downfall of the class. Plus he's the kind of guy whose bull**** is only swallowable when he's front running. Once he started losing, he quickly went from eccentric to weird.

Diego's issue was technical, which caused a mental issue. So it ended up being both. But from what I understand, once the technical tweak was done he was able to build back confidence that carried from the left hash into everything he is doing. I think he's going to have a good senior year.
His issue was totally technical. Yes the technical can lead to mental if you don't have an experienced coach to point out what you are doing wrong and help correct the mistakes. I know they don't have a coach to point out his mistakes. Typically the coaching you get from the team is "good kick" "bad kick" coaching, because they don't know the technical issues involved. Most kickers try to work their way out of the mistakes if they don't what they are doing wrong. Typically this is a bad way to do it, it causes more issues and longer time to fix, which turns into a full mental issue. I hope he does have an outside source to help him. His technical mistakes were not that difficult to see, and not difficult to fix if pointed out.

Ever since the third wide right against Miami, FSU has made it their recruiting priority to lock down the #1 kicker in the nation every couple of years.

Need good kickers and we haven't had one since Crosby.

Not sure if still true but back in the day UCLA got the top kicker out of CA every year. They stockpiled kickers. They also had access to the best kicking coach in the nation at the time.
