Saving Scholarships...

Next year is a very small class of seniors. Smaller than what we thought most years would be. The Buffs have a ton of guys they signed that were fringe signings that don't look like they will pay dividends. Please excuse me if I'd rather see a scholarship go to a guy like Moeller or another walk-on that busts their ass and contributes over another recruit with similar attributes.

While it sucks to have lost out on guys like Brown and Bartlett, the other guys some people cry and complain about are like many of our other players we have recruited, solid football players but are they truly difference makers? Tuli will be changing positions and need at least 2 years to make any impact. Guys like Shay Fields and those types are the ones you say ****. This recruiting class, due to another ****ty season, is not good so go for broke next year, save a schollie for a better guy next year or already on the roster or that wants to transfer over a greyshirt candidate.

Now if we lose Lynott, ****.

Going for broke is not this coaching staff's M.O. The numbers won't change anything.

There's nothing to save. If we get Wilson, for example, we make room. Otherwise, we fill to 85 after spring attrition by granting 1-year scholarships to our most deserving walk-ons to have those slots open for the 2016 class.

What happened to the Roster sticky?

I unstuck it since it was the 2014 roster. The better one for right now is the spring roster I posted in the football forum but didn't stick. A search for "spring roster" should bring it up so you can bump it if you want. Either way, I'll be editing that one soon to include things like Middlemiss being a January enrollee.

Agree. Wilson and other talents that warrant a scholarship, great. Come on board.

It's the fringe guys that choose other schools that I don't get too worked up about.

I almost feel like the Hockaday schollie was that reach to fill a position like some others have. Hopefully he and others prove people wrong but we need some talent that warrants a Pac 12 scholarship rather than just filling a schollie because it is available right now was what I was trying to get at.

Are gray-shirts Isaac Miller and Grant Watanabe going to be enrolled shortly and on the roster for Spring?

By my count we are about 6 schollies over the 85 limit right now without signing anyone else. What kind of Spring attrition is normal?
Will some guys potentially retire due to injury? Cotner, Henington, Mosley, Bell?
Is McIntire willing to ship a couple Juniors out that have never met expectation?
Or does he tell some of the fringe signees to gray-shirt or maybe just yank the offer? How does this work?

Also it appears that we have over 1/4 (23) of all total scholarships for the team used on the D-line(4 positions). I understand the importance of recruiting to this area of need and casting a wide net to catch a few keepers but what happens to the others? Surely there is not room for all of these guys: Tupou, Solis, Norgard, Lopez, Jackson, Carrell, Franke, Umu, Sewell, Tuiloma, Tonz, Kafovalu, Henington, Gilbert, Wilson, McCartney, Shaver, Coleman, Reed, Mathewes, Robbins, Hasselbach, Fehoko.

Yes. Enrolled and in Boulder

We're not 6 over. We will need some attrition in the spring, though.

Cotner will graduate and not play football any more. No indication the others are hanging it up.

We'll see.

Not his m.o. on the gs to do that unless he'd already discussed this as a possibility with the kid. Completely not his m.o. to pull the offer.

Playing a 4-man line, 4/22 starters are DLs. That's 18%. Figure an 82-man roster (3 under 85 limit to account for K, P and LS). So, give or take a scholarship or two, normal numbers would be 18% of the 82 or 15 scholarship DLs. Expect some attrition because 23 is way too many. Also expect some of these guys to change positions. Shaver, at least, will be at OLB. It wouldn't surprise me if Hasselbach also moved. Maybe even Gilbert.

Hey, thanks for the quick response. I should have read your spring roster posting before asking questions. I saw in that post that Mustoe, Cotner and Yates will graduate early. Congrats to them. And that Miller and Watanbe have arrived.

I had thought that Jordan Murphy was a scholarship player. I guess not.

I see that Jaleel Awini is not on the Spring roster. That is dissapointing. Or is he a walkon?

The numbers don't look so bad now.

You're welcome. Awini is still a walk-on. Still at QB, too. In fact, supposedly had a good QB camp over break with a specialist.
