The Lombardi Award released its preliminary watch list, and seven Big 12 players made the cut. The list will be reshaped again before the season begins.

The award is given annually to the best lineman on either side of the ball, or linebackers that line up near the line of scrimmage.

Last year, Nebraska's Ndamukong Suh took home the award, and Oklahoma's Gerald McCoy was among the three finalists.

Texas defensive end Brian Orakpo won in 2008. The three schools have won a combined 11 Lombardi Awards in the 39-year history of the award and are among just six schools with multiple winners.

Here's who made the list from the Big 12 this season:
  • Sam Acho, DE, Texas
  • Pierre Allen, DE, Nebraska
  • Jeremy Beal, DE, Oklahoma
  • Ugo Chinasa, DE, Oklahoma State
  • Travis Lewis, LB, Oklahoma
  • Von Miller, OLB, Texas A&M
  • Nate Solder, OT, Colorado

It's early, but from that group, the likely front runners would be either Beal or Miller. What do you think?
