I haven't seen any pieces like this on CU. I wonder if Dan Hawkins even cares or is trying anything different. We should have a whole new spectrum of athletes to recruit and I haven't heard crap on our end.

The part that pisses me off the most is I think Dan is gone. Bohn wants Dan gone but can't fire him. Dan knows he's gone, knows that Bohn can't fire him and is just going through the motions collecting a paycheck and we're missing out on valuable time. That makes me want to throat punch somebody.

    Overreacting?

I bet Dan is feeling left out of all the excitement of the Pac 10 since he knows he will never actually coach a game in the Pac. Dan is probably feeling sorry for himself and wanting Bohn to come up and give him a boost of confidence but Bohn cannot stomach doing that.

    Just a guess.

Sounds like a darn good guess IMO.

It's different going from a non-BCS conference - I'd expect them to get more juice out of the move, especially with their recent success on the field.

Utah will be getting a HUGE shot in the arm from this move. If we had a competent head coach and were winning more than we were losing, we'd be getting a shot in the arm as well. Alas, we have tweedle dum running things, so we won't get much of a bump from the move. Once Hawkins is unemployed, we'll see some results.

    1. Dan is a lame duck and recruits know it. 2. Dan probably lacks desire to recruit since he knows he will get canned.

Sidenote: If #2 is true Dan should resign immediately.

The part that pisses me off is that's a year TOO late. We're sitting on this thing waiting for a good time to fire Dan. Party started an hour ago and we're planning to attend tomorrow. THat's the most ass backwards way of running things.

Anyways, I know there isn't much we can do about it, I just want to bitch.

This is the big thing, guys like the idea of going someplace where they feel like they have a chance to be part of a winning program. With Utah they have won a lot of games in the last few years and have a coach that looks like he isn't going anywhere soon.

CU on the other hand has been consistently losing and has a coach that looks to be on the way out the door sometime soon. Players look at losing records and the uncertainty of what the new coach will be expecting to do when he gets here. Will he want to go with his own recruits or will he give a fair chance the the guys from the past regiem? Will he use a system that fits their talents or go to a system that they are a poor fit for? Will he make them feel welcome or try to push them out the door to make room for more of "his" guys?

On the other hand a lot of the Utah recruits were expecting to be playing for a MWC school and are now looking at a BCS conference school, they are secure in the coach being there to follow through on his promises and have a good idea of what system will be run.

This is all the more reason we need to get Hawk out of here sooner than later and get back onto solid footing in this program.

If Dan was a man, knew that Bohn planned to get rid of him, he should step away. Are you just sitting around waiting for a pay-day? Get out of the driver's seat and give your son a chance to work with a new coach and hopefully a better offensive instructor.

Damn the last few years have been messy!

I wonder if CU admins (the ones who over-ruled Bohns decision to can Dan) would have been more willing to fire Hawk if they knew they were going to the Pac. Just seems like with all of the excitement comes a "crap we still have Hawkins another season" thought. Kind of bittersweet.

Keeping Hawkins the extra year will hurt CU but you guys will get back on track in the Pac. I was a poet...

See, I think this has been in the works for a while, and the reason Dan was kept was precisely because we'd be making a move. The kind of coach we will be looking for as a member of the Pac is probably different than the kind of coach we'd be looking for as a member of the B12. We have a better chance, IMO, of attracting a quality coach now than we did a month ago. We're going to have to take our lumps this year, though. Dan Hawkins is a worthless football coach, and we're stuck with him for now. All we can do at this point, as fans, is to dream of better things to come, because this year is going to suck.

This makes a lot of sense. To expand: A new coach will not only be secure knowing we can pay him a or more if he does well, he will also know that the AD will have more money to spend on facilities, recruiting, and even assistant coaches. We just got far more attractive to a far sighted coach.

As bad as Dan has been, he's not going to just mail it in. Even if he thinks he's a goner, he has to coach for his next job. Sitting back and collecting a paycheck isn't going to help him get hired somewhere else.

You're right. He is saying multiple times that this programs was burned to the ground so it isn't his fault so he gets hired somewhere else.

If this is the case does Hawk last the season, or would Bohn pull the trigger after the non-con?

I also think that as bad as things have been Dan Hawkins truly believes that he can turn it around and make CU a winner. It may mean ignoring the obvious, convincing himself that the truth is a lie and that his lies are the truth, and ignoring even the people who he has trusted in his life, but in his heart Hawkins is certain that he is just a few plays away from being successful at CU. I don't see him quiting on himself or his team even in the face of what has happened on the scoreboard for the past four years. When he is finally fired, in his heart he will believe that had he been given just a little more time he would have had a winner.

Understand that my response will be pure conjecture and speculation, but I *think* what will happen is that Bohn will have Chuck Nienas prepare a working list of candidates. He probably already has done this. We'll make contact via Nienas to scope out the interest level in the various candidates. Once the season is over, Bohn publicly announces he's beginning a "nationwide coaching search", that will probably last all of a week or so, because it's already been completed for the most part. We have our new coach hired by the end of December, just in time to make the most of whatever is left of our recruiting season.
Keep in mind that even if we do fire Hawkins after the OOC, we won't have another coach in place until the end of the season. Any prospective recruit is going to want to know who the coach will be prior to commiting. Last, but not least, keeping Hawkins through the end of this season will end up saving the AD a little money. The long and short of it is that we're going to have a sh*tty season, but I believe brighter days are in our future.

You know, for a while now I've been speculating on my tin foil hat conspiracy theory about the big flipflop on Hawkins firing. By all accounts prior to the NU game Hawkins was a goner. Then Bohn went out to the Hawaii invitational tourney with the B-Ball team and after the trip Dan supposedly had his job back. By all accounts Mike spent a ton of time out there talking with the AZ AD. Supposedly the CU to the PAC talks got their start all the way back in October. I've always thought there may have been some strong suggestions from Byrne that CU might want to save a bit of its war chest to cover the move to the PAC if he was telling Bohn that things looked good for an invite. Now I think Benson not wanting to take the political heat is probably the most likely answer, but this very well may have been a factor, particularly if Bohn came back and told Distefano and Benson that we may be needing to look at a move over the Spring. May also explain Dan's...umm...less than enthusiastic response to the PAC move if he knows that's what saved his job.

Well, see, the move to the Pac 12 is a big thing. Dan only deals with little things.

Dan Hawkins was given the public vote of confidence by Bohn, DiStephano and Benson last fall. He isn't going anywhere prior to the CSU game, barring some salacious story. Don't hold your breath for a DUI or anything involving hookers, guns and blow. The timing of hiring a new coach 5 weeks before fall camp isn't right. Anyone CU would want is already a member of a program who is getting their players ready. Any new coach needs more time to piece together his staff of assistants for the 2010 season. So long as the Buffs win, Dan Hawkins can stay. But if there is an other Toledo style embarassment against the likes CSU or Hawaii, then any patience that the fans have left will be gone. CSU is a MUST WIN.

IMO there are 3 hurdles to clear. 1) Resolution to the B12 exit penalty. 2) Selection of new candidates based upon conference reallignment. 3) Dan Hawkins failing to win.

Any of these hurdles aren't resolved, it's business as usual.

Maybe I'm wrong but I think if anyone cares to take a look they'll find that the bulk of Utah's verbals are Utah kids. Now I'm not suggesting those guys won't be legit players, or that a winning coach in Hawkins' position wouldn't be getting a similar bounce with CO kids, but it's not like the Utes are signing four *s or raiding USC's turf.

Obviously he isn't getting fired before the season starts. What I was asking (and I tend to agree with Sackman) is would we cut Hawk loose if the team has a rough non-con and just name an interim until the season ends, or would we let him ride out the season regardless of his record in non-con. Hopefully Hawk wins 11 this year and goes on to great success, but most people don't see that happening.

Either way I don't think we'd have a new coach in place until the season ends.

i'd like to believe that part of the reason Dan wasn't fired last year was because the losingness of the season came as a surprise to everyone in the AD....and they simply weren't prepared to make a move when the time came/became obvious Dan was gonna go below sub .500 after (I think) everyone around the Dal thought a bowl game was the season's outcome. you have admins like DiStephano and Benson who didn't want their "job performance review" to include a hasty, 2nd rate hire and if Dan tanks again, they can say he hung himself and they showed "commitment to doing things the right way" and "getting it done in the classroom". All the stink is on Dan for not winning...and they look like the good guy admins. with a year to get someone like Neinas prepared, they ought to have as solid a list as they could have. with the Pac feather and the promise of more revenue....you go up in price range.

    i'd like to believe...

a person would have to have integrity to do that. if there's one thing hawkins has shown with his constant excuse making, finger pointing, and handling of players, it's that he doesn't have any integrity.

And that might be the silver lining in this debacle that is Dan Hawkins' tenure at CU. Any prospective coach would know that the AD will be patient as long as the team is headed in the right direction. The downside is that we may lose another recruiting year. Whatever coach comes better hit the ground running on the recruiting trail. Maybe the new coach keeps some of the old staff, say like Ambrose who is young and a pretty solid recruiter.

Totally disagree with you. Hawk has his faults and it's completely fair to question his coaching ability, motivational tactics, ability to prepare his team, decision making, PR savvy, or his ability to evaluate his own performance and make improvements, but I'd never accuse they guy of having no integrity.

By all accounts he's a stand up guy who cares deeply about his family, his team, and this program. He doesn't cheat, he believes in himself and his staff, and he's trying to produce a winner.

I have nothing against Hawk the man, I just don't want him to be our coach anymore.

How much of the "recruiting rankings" get an automatic "bump" because of the conference affiliation and "BCS status" of the schools they are committing to?

I'm sure Rivals, Scout, and ESPN are wanting to take full advantage of gaining new subscribers so they will cater to Utah Utes new BCS status.

As mentioned CU was already in a BCS conference so it is a "lateral move" as far as the services are concerned.

That said, I would expect our coaching staff to start killing the CA/AZ recruiting pipelines with this official move, but the current coaching nightmare is the biggest obstacle.
