Skiers Primed For NCAA Title Run (BUFFS WIN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!)

I also have this list at the bottom of the original post, but now that the championships are over also wanted to post the list of individual Buff All-Americans for this year as a new post. (Ask forgiveness in advance for any errors.):

1st Team All-Americans (1st-5th place in their race)- Rune Oedegaard (3rd) and Mads Stroem (4th) (Men's Nordic 10K Freestyle Nordic); Maja Solbakken (4th in Women's 15K Classic Nordic); Mads Stroem (2nd) and Rune Oedegaard (3rd) (Men's 20K Classic Nordic)

2nd Team All-Americans (6th-10th place in their race)- Maja Solbakken (6th), Petra Hyncicova (7th) and Ane Johnsen (10th) (Women's Nordic freestyle); Henrik Gunnarsson (7th in Men's Giant Slalom); Petra Hyncicova (6th) and Ane Johnsen (9th) (Women's 15K Classic Nordic); Thea Grosvold (6th) and Jessica HONKONEN (7th) (Women's Slalom)

A few final notes from me (unless I think of something else)-

1) Don't think I ever said "Thanks" to the coaches for Buff fans, but they are obviously the planners, architects and engineers of the great accomplishments by Buff skiing over the last 25 years that Coach Rokos has been at the helm, including of course the last four days.

(If folks haven't read it and have the time, there was a Daily Camera article written by Neil Woelk before the championships started about the Buff skiing tradition and its great coaches and skiers (http://www.buffzone.com/skiing/ci_27667856/woelk-cu-skiing-shouldnt-be-taken-granted). One very provocative paragraph in that article is -
"But CU skiing has never been a minor sport. In terms of influence and impact, you will be hard pressed to find any sport in CU history that has had such a worldwide impact. In fact, the CU ski team has had perhaps as much impact as any single program at any university in the nation has ever had in any sport."
(I'm not enough of a sports or skiing historian to even hazard a guess as to how accurate that proposition might be.))

2) Although they probably individually might have wanted to get a win or two in their two races, the Buff men's Nordic lead tandem of Mads Stroem and Rune Oedegaard came through with, as can be seen above, great finishes with one 2[SUP]nd[/SUP], two 3rds and one 4[SUP]th[/SUP] place combined in their two races. As I also wrote yesterday, thanks again to senior Mr. Oedegaard for being a mainstay of the Buff teams (including two national championship years) during his time in Boulder, and best wishes to him in his future endeavors. (Thankfully, Mr. Stroem is only a sophomore, so hopefully will be around to help lead the Buffs for 2 more years.) The 3rd men's Nordic skier, sophomore Jackson Hill, also earned a valuable 17 points in the 1st race of the championships to help get the Buffs get off to a great start.

3) Great job also by the women’s cross country/ Nordic team. Last year that team, made up of 3 freshmen, was the lowest point scoring unit for the Buffs. This year, with 2 NEW freshmen and one returning sophomore, tied with the Men’s Nordic team for MOST points by any Buff unit. With their youth, looks like they could become the Buff’s top scoring unit for years to come. Congrats to the 3 young women on this year’s team who, as can be seen in the list at the top of this post, each earned 2 All-American honors for Top 10 finishes.

4) The Alpine Teams did what was needed, especially impressive given how much pressure there was today. Congrats to them all, with a little extra to the one senior on the Alpine team who was competing at these Championships, Brooke Wales Granstrom. She leaves the Buffs as a two time 1[SUP]st[/SUP] Team All-American in the Giant Slalom, as well as being a member of a plethora of Academic All-American Teams over her career at CU. (Per the article mentioned and linked to below, she has earned “nearly a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA in Integrative Physiology”. Wow.)

5) Speaking of academics, this team is also VERY impressive in that area. (If those interested hadn’t read it, there’s a recent cubuffs.com article entitled “Eleven Buffs Earn National Academic Ski Honor” describing the ski team's "off the snow" honors- http://www.cubuffs.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=4242&SPID=273&DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=600&ATCLID=209930942 .)
