So, the last races for the ski team before the NCAA Championships (which start Wednesday, March 11th) are a combined conference championships and NCAA West Regional, being held today and tomorrow at Girdwood, AK (same location as the just completed Seawolf Invitational).

So, after three of four races scheduled today (Men's giant slalom still must be pending completion), the Buff's have a narrow lead-

Another 4 events tomorrow and 1 today, so of course anything can still happen before the team champion is crowned.

Skiers In Close Second At RMISA Championships

Release: February 27, 2015
By: David Plati, Associate AD/Sports Information Send Mail Print RSS

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The University of Colorado ski team enjoyed a solid first day here Friday, as the Buffaloes are in the hunt for their 27th conference title at the midway point of the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association (RMISA) Championships, which also double as the NCAA West Regional.

Utah holds a slight lead over the Buffaloes, ending day one with 315 team points; Colorado is just eight back at 307. Just 10 points separates third through fifth place at this juncture: Montana State (277), Denver and New Mexico (both 267).

Colorado has finished first or second in the RMISA title meet the last nine years, and 47 times since 1950, when the Buffs first started a varsity program.

“We are getting more and more comfortable on this type of snow, the same kind of snow situation in the east,” CU head coach Richard Rokos said. “We’ll see more of it in training when we get back to New York, but we had a far better day today with our individual runs. The consistency isn’t in place yet but we’re getting there."

3 Buff women in the top 7 of the slalom after the 1st run (per http://www.live-timing.com/race2.php?r=149153 ). If they can keep their positions there in their 2nd runs, that will be a big help in catching the Utes. (Men's Classic Nordic race, which should also help the Buffs, should be completing soon.)

Looks like another 1-2 finish by the great CU men's Nordic tandem. Congrats to them!

(If my suspect math skills are correct, this could mean the Buffs and Utes are exactly tied, with only men's and women's slalom events left to complete.)

And, in the Men's slalom, with closeness of times it looks too close to call between the Utes and Buffs after the 1st run, with Utes in 1-13-14-28 spots and Buffs in 6-9-12 and 27th. Of course, it's all about the 2nd runs now.

Looks like great work by the women's Alpine team, with unofficially a 1-5-6-8 finish in the slalom (per http://www.live-timing.com/race2.php?r=149153) by the top 4 women (I believe only the top 3 scores from each team count?). Special congrats to Jessica Honkonen for the win!

With Utah's top 3 skiers coming in 11-13-14, the Buffs have definitely gained a little points cushion over the Utes going into the last event- the men's slalom 2nd run.

Edit- looks like the Buffs are now 40 points up with the men's slalom pending-

It definitely helps the Buffs a lot that Utah is that far back

Unofficially, congrats to the Buffs for winning the conference/ NCAA western regional championships! (More details/ total scores coming I'm sure momentarily.)

I couldn't find via a quick Google search how the scoring works exactly, but the Buff men's slalom team had a good performance so that I don't think there's any way the Utes made up the 40 points necessary to pass the Buffs for the overall win. The top 3 Buff men unofficially came in 4-6-11 (with another 15th), while the Utes finished 2-10-14. Congrats again to the ski team and coaches!

Keep the momentum up so you can blast through the upcoming NCAA national championship races starting in ~1-1/2 weeks!

Edit- mostly for my future reference (for the NCAA championships, etc.), think I found how the scoring works- looks like the top 30 finishers for each ski event earn points. The scores earned for the top 8 finishers from 1st through 8th are 40 (for 1st place)-37-34-31-29-27-25-23. After that, the 9th through 30th places earn one point less for each lower place finish, so for example 9th place earns 22 points, 10th place 21 points, etc., all the way down to the 30th place finisher, who earns 1 point.

I was assuming RMISA and/ or CU skiing's twitter would post official final scores, but nothing has showed up (hours after the championships have ended). The below tweet at least seems to confirm the Buffs DID win, however!

(Assume an official cubuffs.com article will be coming out later tonight or tomorrow.)
