Great day in Boulder today. Warm and a great crowd-getting nearly 18K is big step in the right direction. Watching Ralphie V run twice was hilarious.

    The good:
    1. Both Hawkins and Nelson look pretty far ahead of Ballenger (to be expected).
    2. Moyd looked pretty shifty at RB.
    3. Devenney at TE looked pretty good. He seems to have some deceptive speed.
    4. All the guys on kick returns looked solid.
    5. Quite a few LBs were making plays out there. Burton was all over the place.
    6. Overall, this team looks bigger (particularly along the lines) and faster than the teams over the last 3-4 years.

    The bad:
    1. The offensive line didn't look horrible, but we have a ways to go here. Solder isn't quite strong enough to handle DEs quite yet. Herrod just about ran right over a few times. As I looked at Maiva standing on the sidelines for a good portion of the game, I still don't understand that move one bit. The one bright spot was Ryan Miller. He looked very good.
    2. Game got pretty sloppy in the second half. We still have a bunch of young guys on both sides of the field that aren't quite sure where they are supposed to be all the time.
    3. QBs were a little slow with some of the reads. A couple potential big plays were squandered.

    The ugly:
Special teams were pretty bad today. Two blocked punts, a blocked field goal, and a fumble on a punt return. The field goal issues look to be an issue of timing to me. Not quite sure what's going on with the punting game.

Was 18k all that showed up? Looked like we were at least in the mid 20's to me, though I guess without ticket takers it's kind of hard to tell how many individual people came and went (most of my old crew didn't show up until halfway through the third quarter)

I watched the Texas Tech spring game on ESPN and it didn't look like they had hardly anyone there. I was kinda surprised considering they are up and coming? Who was probably the most impressive at your spring game???

I also thought Beatty looked good on defense and Luke Walters looked good on offense.

In terms of the field goal timing, keep in mind Drescher didn't play. Even the punts we got off were awful and/or our return guys did not catch them.

Overall, I was underwhelmed but after all it is just a scrimmage.

D Scott was over on the east side entertaining a TALL WR from Texas. Scott is a rock star. He was down in front of us signing autographs, taking pictures and hanging out with J Fly when he wasn't in the scrimmage. Scott must have been interviewed at least 3-4 times that I saw.

    Posting from airport on Blackberry!

Up and coming? I think "plateaued 3 years ago and showing no signs of moving in either direction" would be a lot more appropriate.

Anyone know if she's going to grow much in the coming years? Compared to Ralphie IV she looked like a muskrat running around down there. An exceptionally violent, ill tempered muskrat, but a muskrat just the same.

The handlers said she will grow. I remember when Ralphie IV was that small. However, they said it is difficult to say how big she will get.

I actually agree on Beatty and Walters. Both looked pretty good. I was underwhelmed for the most part as well, but it was a nice day and any football is fine by me.

RM, I estimated about 20K so 18K might well be right. It always seems CU underestimates Spring game attendance though.

Hmmm i wonder who it was but i saw the WR too, they were always together. Also, there was a constant group around Scott and everyone around me was pointing in awe saying hey there's scott. Ralphie V was incredible, way faster. It looked like she was trying to gore some of her handlers too.

Espinoza was pretty impressive along with Kevin Moyd--very shifty. B.J. Beatty looked very quick and rushed the QB very well.

Riar Geer was in street clothes working the chains along with Brian Lockridge, but Lynn Katoa was in uniform signing autographs on the field.

THere were quite a few 2008 recruits at the game. Bryce Givens was standing next to Ryan Miller and he looked taller, but thin. BTW Miller is HUGE.

There wasn't quite 20K, but a much improved turn out. The students came out in force this year.

Overall it was a pretty fun game, and nice to see some football again. Go Buffs!

were they written by horn fans?

if so, tech handing oklahoma their hat recently has induced a state of arousal which has spilled over and damaged common sense.

:lol:They may have been written by some Texas fans. Watching them today I didn't see anything too impressive, but then again I'm hearing some unimpressive things about our performance as well.

Answering my own question from before, I found an article on the Colorado Daily (God only knows what I was thinking reading that publication) that sheds some light on Ralphie V's girth, or lack thereof:

Actually, I'd recommend reading this whole article (linky). Mildly amusing when it was printed, this story becomes hilarious after what went down today. Paraphrasing the Ralphie V handlers and caretakers, "basically we want Ralphie's run during the spring game to be the exact opposite of what Ralphie's run ended up looking like"

"Every run -- even with the old buffalo who we knew was just an old hat at it -- you still just get this feeling like something could go wrong," Lawson said before practice on Tuesday. "The band could get taken out, a cheerleader could die, you never know what's gonna happen. And now it's just times ten with this new buffalo."

"Scott, who is expected to challenge for a starting job, or, at least, considerable playing time, also spent the afternoon sitting with Jarrod Darden, a lanky wide receiver from Fort Worth, who came to Boulder to check out the program."

This may be the funniest quote I've ever read...anywhere! Is this from the Onion?? Fantastic.

This quote suggests the entire band could be taken out, not just a trombone player like in the sissy 1982 Cal/Stanford, but the WHOLE FREAKIN' BAND! A dead cheerleader?? Cripes! It sounds as though we were already walking a line (even if we didn't entirely realize it), and now we've increased the threat tenfold.

Hey Marching Tuba, if you don't get picked up for Ralphie runner (I'm sure you will, but bear with me on the hypothetical) perhaps you could try out for cheerleader. Somehow, someway, you will find a way to get to get trampled by Ralphie.

As for me, I'm now afraid to even attend games. Just too freakin' risky. Also, I'm a bit squeamish with blood, so even on the off chance I don't get gored, I'll almost certainly be forced to witness the grizzley demise of a cheerleader. Unless, of course, I'm up getting beer when it happens. What??!!! No more beer at Folsom? I'm definitely done attending games!

    Ralphie V rocks!

    My two cents:

    1. The OL is much better from a numbers perspective, but still kind of shaky in spots. Tau looked huge , but his feet aren't all that nifty. Solder's feet looked nifty, but got pushed around a little. Miller was the best OL out there IMO. Sanders was steady, Iltis, Behrens and Daniels played OG. Kind of hard to tell. Head looked good. Overall, there is some work to be done.

    2. RB's were running hard. Sumler was pretty good. Moyd looked shifty. Nabors looked OK.

    3. Cody was clearly the most polished QB. Balklenger looked big and strong, but tentative. Nelson was inaccurate at times.

Overall, I still saw a lot of that misdirection stuff, very little line up and knock people backwards with a FB.

    My other two cents:

    1. DL looked pretty good. Obi and Herrod look really good. IMO these guys are going to be good before too long.

    2. LB corps are deeper than I thought. Ahles played OK. Beatty played really well. Sip and Burton, especially, looked very good.

    3. DB's were a mixed bag. Jimmy Smith looked OK. Anthony Wright and Anthony Perkins are very athletic, but it was hard for me to tell very much.

Special teams were scary. Marques Simas looks real good. Scotty McKnight and J. Smith are known quantities, but it was again hard for me to tell much.

Overall, the Buffs are getting better, but I see somewhere between 6-6 and 8-4 this year. Especially with the schedule the Buffs have.

I was able to watch a lot of the game on cubuffs.com. The KOA coverage was decent, although there was a lot of buffering time that I missed video. It looked to me like Cody had a little trouble, not a lot, handling the shotgun snap, Nick looked great, and Matt looked very good - gotta agree with Ringo that this is the best our QB set has looked in a long time. Ralphie V was awesome! Why do they even talk about other mascots....
