It's almost here! Anyone going to make it to some practices?

Here are some spring ball notes from CUBuffs.com

    General Spring Notes:
Offensive lineman Erick Fataagi is academically eligible and he should be able to step in and play this fall...Cornerback Benjamin Burney has a couple more surgeries to go through this spring and it is questionable if he will play this fall. “His (available) redshirt year is a window for him not to play,” Hawkins said... True freshman Lynn Katoa will start out spring practices at the inside linebacker position...Hawkins said the new depth at linebacker with four incoming recruits and the return of sophomore Michael Sipili will help in several ways: “Special teams guys are typically bigger running backs, linebackers and safeties,” he said. Having more of those guys will be big on special teams and not just the defense.”...Speaking of linebackers, Hawkins had some words of praise for junior Jeff Smart. After reviewing game film from the Independence Bowl, he said him and his assistants would be amazed at some of the plays they thought senior linebacker and Butkus Award finalist Jordon Dizon was making before seeing the pile unearth the unheralded Smart. “He is fully capable of having a Jordon-type season,” Hawkins said.

    Position Battles:
The cornerback position will be an area of focus this spring and fall with the Buffs losing departed senior Terrence Wheatley and with Burney’s availability a question mark. Sophomore Jimmy Smith and redshirt freshmen Anthony Wright and Lamont Smith are three true corners who could get a crack at the starting spots. Senior Gardner McKay and junior Cha’pelle Brown have been used primarily in nickel and dime situations, but they are the two most experienced players at the cornerback position. Sophomore Jalil Brown and redshirt freshman Anthony Perkins have been working mostly at safety, but Hawkins said they could be in the mix at cornerback as well. “Like the O-line and the D-line, you can never have enough corners,” he said. “Especially in this league where you play a lot of nickel and dime.”...Junior tailback Kevin Moyd and sophomore tailbacks Demetrius Sumler and Brian Lockridge have a chance to show their worth this spring before a trio of talented running back recruits arrive in Boulder this summer. Said Hawkins: “Brian only knows one speed and tempo. It doesn’t matter if he’s competing against Walter Payton or Eric Dickerson—he’s going 120 mph. Clearly it’s their time and they have to know that. There needs to be a sense of urgency there.”...For the third time in three seasons, the Buffs will have a different starting placekicker. Hawkins said he is not worried about how the battle will unfold. “I don’t have any doubts. Aric (Goodman) is a good kicker and so is Jameson (Davis). I just don’t know who it is going to be right now.” Goodman is a sophomore who transferred from Wyoming after his freshman season as the Cowboys’ starting kicker. He sat out last season at CU due to NCAA transfer rules. Davis is a high school recruit who has already enrolled in school at CU (along with Katoa), and thus is eligible to participate in spring drills...Hawkins also had very good things to say about redshirt freshman quarterback Matt Ballenger, who he called “very, very, very competitive.” Hawkins said that in high school, Ballenger’s basketball growth (he was Idaho’s Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior) was considerably higher than his football growth. Before coming to a football camp at CU, Hawkins said Ballenger always envisioned himself playing basketball. “I’m looking to see him get more confident as a football player,” he said. “He is a very smart kid. If we had a couple of quarterbacks go down last year and we had to put him in there I think he would have managed it.”

Just got back from practice. Nothing really new to say.

Josh Smith changed his number to #1. And Maiava is now #40...
...Josh Hartigan got hurt. probably a stinger. He left practice early...
    ....No Katoa and Geer.

I also heard Hawks new offense will use a no huddle offense. Just a rumor.

Hawk also had visitors sign in. They said he'd like to know who his fans are. I thought it was a cool gesture.

I read today where the spooners are looking to do the same thing. Seems to be the rage in the B12 - I think there are 5 teams who used it pretty extensively last year.

I saw Herrod at practice today. That kid is a monster. I'd hate to line up across from him.

Yup. Just walk in. You have to stay on the end of the field though. It's the same as the outside fields.

Kid went through alot last year,I think he will step up big time this year, nasty and motor never stops. He will have a better understanding of the speed and plays this year and they will just cut him loose.

Looking forward to seeing him and obi on the ends .

I didn't see anything that really stood out in practice that much really

....DT Brandon Nicholas looked really impressive out there during the one on one drills vs the Olinemen. He was really dominating imo. One word with him, Experience....

...OL Erik Fataagi was out there for a little bit today. I'm guessing he had another class because he left early today. He looked good from what i saw. Really light on his feet for such a big guy.Grimes had some high praise for him today....

...The PK Goodman and Davis look really impressive. I think Hawk found some gems with those kids...

...Josh Hartigan is still in a neck brace today. He showed up in street clothes(obviously) before practice ended. I hope he gets well soon...

...CU continues to work on their no huddle offense during today's practice. I'm not sure if its a 2 minute drill, or if Hawk is planning to insert a no huddle offense. I've heard rumors that he will be going no huddle. Not positive on that though....

... Nicholas and Hypolite are going to be solid for us on the DT front. The only question is who will step up at the DE spots...

Going no-huddle would seem to feature Kai a lot more in the backfield versus a typical FB role. Any thoughts or reports on him?

there were two guys in Rockies hats. I was standing in the back on the southwest corner. Were you the one talking to the younger blonde guy? I got there around 4:30 and stayed till 4:50 because I had a meeting to get to.

From my limited time there I thought the kaj did a nice job, he was running well with some force, and caught every pass towards him as they were working on screens.

I did notice that ballenger completed every pass I saw him attempt while cody had some trouble on a few but was still the one telling people where to go in thw drills.

Our TEs look pretty good and there were 5 practicing today so I think that we should be okay even though Devenney is the only one with game time experience. Devin Shanahan was the one that caught my eye, big frame with nice hands and good body control.

I noticed that solder and miller were being paired together often. That duo was pretty intense, the were pushing the defender (just holding a pad) back the fastest and the farthest. Definitely dominate and solder doesn't look that small surprisingly next to miller just not as thick obviously.

There is a short video on CUBuffs.com from yesterday's practice.

It's in the "Latest Clips" tab on BuffsTv

I think Kai will have a huge impact this year. He caught all of his passes (except he catches them like you would expect an offensive lineman to catch) but he ran well with the ball and I watched his blocking excercises and he looked good. Good decision by the coaches IMO.
