Spring game reflection

After thinking about it for a week, I think the Defensive coaches pulled their punches in the Spring Game. Lil Hawk was murdered the first two series, but then magically he (and Nelson) were given adequate time to throw the ball. I'm wondering if the defensive coaches didn't hold back in order to give the QB's some confidence.

Thoughts?

well, i guess it wouldn't be unprecedented. that's one reason that the fuskers and others go "ones" v. "twos" in spring games.

we don't have the depth, again, to do that. so, you've got a mix of 1s and 2s in there. i would hope that it wasn't so much that the 1s were holding back as that the 2s on d weren't as effective.

we could use a little confidence on offense.

could be. not really the same, but there were some completions during the 7 on 7 that were the result of either QB standing in the "pocket" for half an hour. really long time. that ain't gonna fly when it's live.

Or they changed the defense to practice man coverage, prevent, or zone. Possibly the subed in the 2nd and 3rd teamers which couldn't do didly.

What ain't gonna fly? Standing in the pocket for half an hour or playing offense with only 7 players?

At this point, I'm relying mostly on the comments I'm hearing from the coaches. And to a man, they are saying that we are lightyears ahead of last spring (and we better be!). New QB, whether it's Lil Hawk or Nelson, probably means some growing pains, but I'm excited about the potential of our QB play, whoever it ends up being (p.s., it's going to be Cody).

This is the crappy part of spring practices/games. If the offense does well, then the glass half empty crowd tells us that the defense is gonna suck this year, while the glass half full crowd tells us that the offense won't be stopped this year.

Glass half full? glass half empty?....me? I'm an engineer, so I think the glass is twice as big as it needs to be!:smile2:

One of the most exciting parts was watching BJax in other positions. The guy is flat out exciting when you aren't horrified he may throw the ball.

You're right. Reminds me of watching the CU/NU game in Boulder when Jamaal Lord was QB. Everytime he dropped back to pass, we would yell "Throw it!" because we were scared to death of him running with it!

I've said this before, but I'm excited to see how creative Hawk can be in using B-Jax. I think given the right plays, he could be a real weapon.

Ya know I can't argue with that! I used to scream OMG NO....he is going to pass it! :smile2:

Gee that take ya all day to think up that? I mean be2ween fixn up ure traylor and all!

clearly, you must troll the boards 24/7 if you expect everyone else to do the same.

sorry, dittums, he has been rather busy for the past couple of days, and therefore i have not let him come out and play with y'all.

:sorry: :finger2:

I hope so, but don't you think the defense is going to box him because they know he can't hit a moose in the ass with a snowshoe?

They had him playing a bit at QB, a bit at RB, a bit at WR, and returning punts and kicks. I think they're looking for ways to get him the ball other than QB.

i think they will try to break tendencies with bjax in the qb slot from time to time-- that will mean he will have to throw some to keep the d honest.

i would think we will see some run/pass option plays with him at the qb position and also see him moved around a lot in motion from other postions.
