The highest paid coach doesn not guarantee a bowl win.
Nor does 60,000 attendees at the spring game.
Nor does a bunch of five star recruits.
BUT having such a fllowing does buy favor with networks.
It also entitles you to play for all the marbles with an undefeated or one loss record.
Utah's stadium holds only 42k. It's easier to imagine the Ute faithful cheering on the Red Rock gymnastic or basketball team, or heading up Little Cottonwood Canyon for some spring skiing. This Utah team is the direct beneficiary of the 2002 SLC Olympics, which brought the Utes world class athletic facilities. It's certainly arguable that the 2008 team, and that of Urban Meyer would never have happened without the Winter Games. This was the shot in the arm that put Utah infront of BYU.
At this point, the Buffs have neither the tax based capital infusion from the state that the Utes enjoy, nor the pure volume of bubbas that put butts in seats down in Tuscaloosa.
The answer to this is beer sales in Balch Field house, more state & government funding, and some sugar daddy that can shake Boulder out of it's neo-hippy trustfund culture and back into headlines that are more positive than dead beauty queens and football scandals. It would be nice to see Boulder on the bleeding edge of the next economic boom.
