Three Buffs have received W-League "Team of the Week" honors. Bri Hooks & Kate Scheele made the first team while Danica Evans was honorable mention.

The W-League is a pro-am summer competition for women that allows top collegians to retain college eligibility.

"Kate Scheele had a big night making saves to keep the game level while the Sounders Women looked to counter and find the winning goal. The game as billed as the top game of the week and it delivered with attacks regularly buzzing from one end of the park to the other. The half time score had the teams level at 1.
In the 52[SUP]nd[/SUP] minute, the Sounders Women broke free on a run by Brianna Hooks. Rachel Pittman played a nice ball in and Hooks smacked the net to make it 2-1 Sounders Women."

Incoming freshman Sarah Kinzner from Calgary has been named to the Canadian soccer team for the upcoming Pan Am games in Toronto. The team is made up of the top young Canadian players including several that are on the national team in the current Women's World Cup. The matches run from July 11-25.

Last night Kinzner's club team, Calgary Foothills FC, defeated The Seattle Sounders Women 1-0 in Calgary. The Sounders Women are one of the top sides in the W-League. Kinzner started and was very active in the attack.

I watched the Colorado Rush women play against the Seattle Sounders women last night. Danica Evans is going to score a ****-ton of goals for the Buffs. She has an amazing shot and has a dynamic game. She played most of the game as a target striker and is really hard to knock off the ball (which I wouldn't have expected because she isn't a big girl). But she is also quick as a motha', and made some really nice darting runs through Seattle's backline. Aside from Seattle's #10 (Rose Lavelle, who will be a star on the USWNT someday), Danica was the best player on the pitch IMO.

Also, just in case you didn't know already, Brie Hooks is fast as hell.

The two of them together will be a great strike force for the Buffs.

The combination for players coming in like Evans and Kinzner with the veteran attacking players that are returning (Hooks, Krauser, Stark, Pappalardo, etc.) should give the Buffs the ability to create a lot of chances shots this season. They could develop into one of the better attacking groups in CU history.

At the other end CU's keepers should be some of the best in the country. The question then is how the Sanchez rebuilds the defense in front of her.

Also just wanted to add that another incoming freshman forward, Stephanie Zuniga-Herrera, is possibly the highest ranked player (along with goalkeeper Jalen Tompkins) in this Buff class, so I assume will also be heavily in the mix for a lot of playing time in coming years.

In general (Assuming of course it works/ makes sense for their overall life plans), might be nice if we can see some more of the freshmen get to red shirt so they can build their strength and endurance, gain experience practicing with the Buff upperclassmen, etc. during their true freshmen years, and then have a good chance to start and thrive for all 4 of their competitive years as Buffs in the very tough Pac 12 conference. (I see the Buffs have 2 red shirt freshmen in the roster this year. Don't know how common red shirting is overall in the "non-revenue" sports in general and soccer in particular (?))

For the defense, it will be interesting if Coach Sanchez and staff continue to move players from other positions (last year- with great success moving Tori Cooper from being a reserve forward to being 2nd Team All- Pac 12 as a senior defender.). One change I can already see (after I believe 1st reading it as a Buffzone note) is that one of last year's reserve goalkeepers, junior Kenzie Tillitt, is now listed as a defender on the roster. (Of course, I assume some of the other already rostered younger defenders will also be (the 1st?) options going forward. I was very impressed with the one frosh defender who I believe got quite a bit of playing time last year, Joss Orejel, and assume she and some of the other younger Buffs will be ready to step up as starters over the next couple years if not this year.)

No doubt that Stephanie comes in with a lot of credentials - she looked to be on track for more playing time with U-17 US national team before she was injured. She may very well earn major playing time this season.

Interesting thought about redshirting some of the incoming freshmen. It seems this doesn't happen often without an injury.

As for the defense, I would bet Heather Ward will be one of the starts in the center of the back line along with perhaps Alex Huynh. Then it's a matter of finding the players for the outside of the back line. This is a very different position compared to the interior. It requires pace and the ability to get into the attack.

If there is another freshman who could have a big impact immediately it seems it would be Alex Vidger. In her case it would be either on the back line or as a defensive midfielder.

Today is the opening of soccer group play in the Pan American Games in Canada. It will be interesting to see how much playing time Sarah Kinzner gets as she is one of the younger players on the Canadian team. For the most part, the Canadian team will be made up of players not on their world cup roster, so they are working to build for futiure world cups.

Here's a recent interview with her about both the Pan Am Games and a bit about CU:

Kinzner started and played 66 minutes in Canada's 5-2 route of Ecuador yesterday in the first of three group stage matches. Canada play Costa Rica on Wednesday.

Here's a bit about Kinzner's role in the win:

"A thumbs up to the foursome of Ashley Lawrence, Emma Fletcher, Sarah Kinzner and Jessie Fleming. All four starting midfielders showed creativity and provided excellent service to their forwards.
Their support and rotation of one another was noticeable, but what stood out most was their no fear attitude. If they made a mistake or gave away the ball, they fought twice as hard to win it back. With a squad that’s predominately U-23, it’s easy to get down on yourself and dwell on the error. This was not the case here."

Canada lost night to Costa Rica 0-2 in their second game of the group stage. This loss is going to make it very difficult for them to advance to the knockout round as they will need to defeat Brazil and get some help elsewhere.

Canada was playing with their U-23 team - four of them were on their World Cup roster - while every other team has basically their World Cup team. So the Canadians were up against some really experienced team.

Kinzner played in the second half.

Somehow this didn't post earlier:

Despite losing to Brazil over the weekend the Canadian team has moved on to the knock out round of the Pan An Games. They will meet Columbia tonight.

Apparently Kinzner played briefly in the second half of the Brazil game which was an 0-2 loss.

It came to an end for Canada on Friday night with a 1-2 loss to Mexico in the bronze medal game. Sarah didn't play in the match.

Up next for her will be a trip to Boulder to get started with her college career.

What happened to the old threads in this forum? I wanted to review our discussion on the future of Prentup field since it came up in the construction thread and I see we only have 8 threads now.

goalline I really don't know. We are in the middle of a data backup for the upcoming migration to Allbuffs 2.0, so maybe something went wonky with that.

@EscapeFromNMBuff or @chipwich would be the gurus on this type of thing.

I was at the scrimmage yesterday. Glad to see that there were some highlights posted, but at ground level they don't do the two goals justice, especially the second one that was initiated by a very well weighted pass from Sarah Kinzner to Brittney Stark. Stark did very well with the ball once she received it to score. I don't think that's the last time we'll see that type of goal this season.

Just s few random observations:

• The match flowed with few stops of play as the ball stayed in play much of the time and there were few fouls. I assume this was in part because there was a reluctance to injure teammates.

• Maddie (sp?) Krauser didn't play. I am assuming she was injured, but really know. Hopefully she'll be available soon.

• As neither team was really able to hold much advantage it looked to me that there is a lot of quality depth this season.

• The starting keepers were Kate Scheele and Scout Watson. It looks like Scheele will once again be the starter. In addition to her physical talents she is very vocal in organizing the defense.

• I was keeping my eye on the newcomers - although I hadn't seen the team at all last season as I was out of the country. Danica Evans will be a solid player this season. She is strong, positions herself well and can hold up the ball which is what you want from a target forward. Sarah Kinzner will be a key cog in the attack. She played the role of attacking midfielder very well. She looks to get the ball when the Buffs win possession and then works to find open teammates. Stephanie Zuniga also look good in the attack. When Evans, Kinzner and Zuniga are on the pitch together they work very well as a group. There's good chemistry there.

• As Alex Vidger comes in with solid credentials I was also watching her a bit, but as she played in central defense it was a bit harder to former an opinion. My guess is she'll be in the mix to start and at least get some solid playing time.

There of course were other freshmen that played as well, but I wasn't as focused on them.
