great effort in the comeback attempt, however...

bama is fast. CU was better conditioned and it showed as the game wore on, but the tide had more athletes and a huge lead.

ah well... the future looks pretty bright.

Why the hell does your coach feel the need to go for it on 4th down so damn early in the game??!!! Let alone at the worst field postion ever! :wow:

Yea, I thought Bama's speed really showed thru on defense. It's pretty encouraging to know that CU could've won this game despite being down 27-0 if they had cashed in on a couple more of their 2nd-half opportunities.

Oh come on, that was a 4th and 1 in opponent's territory. I'm not going to knock any coach for running a fake punt there

If I ever see that mis-direction trap play it will be too soon enough.

Not that early in the game. Besides it's no secret that he will go for it. No one bit on the fake either. I just thought that was not a good time to call the fake.

That drove me nuts! No reason that early in the game to give it back to them, gave them a short field too. Frick. Play the field position game at least the first half of the game Hawk!

That said, great comeback by the team. Too bad that we didn't keep pressure on the Bama QB and let him get his feet under him again. Too bad that we didn't make that key 3rd down stop late in the game so we would of have some time left.

I am happy seeing how many true and RS freshmen contributed in this game; I would think some of those big fast D-linemen would see that they can play early here and get committed to the Buffs soon. I also can't wait to see our O-line in two years. THe Buffs will have a dominant line by then!

I completely Agree! That 4rth down was a good call. And It was a new Trick. We hadn't run it like that before. hahaha. And i am sooo happy that they scored 3 points in the last 38 minutes of game time.. !!!! I Love my Buffawoes for this game. If Hawk teaches nothing else it's to play till it's over. I mean man... How many comebacks is that this year> Granted we let ISU come back, but even then we came back to well... what shoulda beeen a tie

The 4th down calls are getting old. Play field position every once in a while.

Overall, I was happy to see the team fight back. We need to get back to being a grind-it-out running team though to be successful. On defense, I can't wait to watch Nicholas and Hypolite tear up opposing offenses. Nicholas was an animal tonight. One area we are really hurting at is safety.

Why was Hawk upset after the last play of the game? The TV showed him going after the Ref. Anybody have an heads up on what he was upset about?

Did he ever make it to mid field to shake hands?

the odd thing about that 4th down play was that the Buffs seemed to execute it really well. bama stayed home and didn't bite at all. i guess that's proof we may have gone to the fake a few too many times.

while i agree we need more help in the secondary, our lack of athletes at lb this year was a killer. we didn't get any help in coverage from them.

I was wondering about both things as well. I lost my Bama post-game feed and never found out.

True. We just lack speed and depth on defense right now. Hopefully this incoming class will go a long way in addressing that.

One other area that needs to be addressed in the offseason is kick coverage. The kickoffs are not deep and we miss a lot of tackles. You cannot spot the opposing team good field position constantly and expect to win.

You need to teach you kick returners not to catch with their head too. :smile2:

I'm pretty sure it's because the ref blew the play dead before he was supposed to. If you watch it again, a ref starts blowing his whistle after the pitch that Ellis made (I think it was Ellis, it was the one that looked like it might be a forward lateral), while the play was still completely alive.

Obviously, if it was a forward lateral the game would have pretty much been over right then and there, but if a Bama player had picked up a facemask penalty later on the penalties would have offset and CU would have had another down. All in all, I think he had a legit beef, though a somewhat piddling one: Perhaps a flag should have been thrown, but the play shouldn't have been blown dead when it was (especially when you've got replay available to go over anything questionable after the fact).

you might ought to rethink that comment. I dont know how many plays I have seen bungled on the field and then after review they still can't get the call right.

I'm sure he was upset because the play was blown dead. And it did seem pretty obvious that nobody was ever down on the play until well after the whistle blew. But then, that was par for the course for these officials tonight. They had a few big missed calls, particularly a face mask on Hugh that should have been a 15 yarder and a third down play where Devree was mugged. Oh, and two consecutive TERRIBLE spots on a series where Bama ended up getting a first down by the length of the football in the fourth quarter. They didn't score there directly, but the time they ran off after the fact was crucial. That said, I couldn't see that they were any factor at all in Bama building that 27 point lead, and that is where that game was lost.

Lots of good and bad in this one. Watching the way Cody rebounded after the tough start was extremely encouraging. Josh Smith had a bit of a breakout game. Nicholas and the Rabid Goldfish were dominating at times. And the young guys on the o-line showed some flashes of what is going to be a VERY bright future there. On the coaching side, it was encouraging to see them make some adjustments and slow down Bamas early momentum.

On the down side, obviously the first quarter and a half. I hope the fact that they really didn't show up ready to play has to do with being such a young team. The fake punt call, like others have said, might have been ok if Hawk hadn't established such a pattern of going on 4th down. I know I was expecting a fake, and I'm sure Bama was too. There needs to be more pass rush on the edge without having to resort to blitzes. And the first half made it painfully obvious that the secondary has a SERIOUS lack of speed. Thinking of the future without T-Wheat scares the hell out of me. I think that's the biggest negatives I can think of.

ALL THE NEGATIVES? WHAT THE HELL AM I TALKING ABOUT?? All the dumbass double misdirection flanker trap play crap really has GOT to go. I know the announcers were saying tonight that it's the biggest thing in CFB this year. I really don't care. It simply takes too long to develop, especially on a night like tonight when Bama was getting inside penetration. They have been trying to run that all year and it has hurt them much more consistently than resulting in a play. That wrinkle really needs to be ironed out of the offense over the offseason.

So, when's the next game?? :gobuffs:

In some ways there is an upgrade needed at safety- watching Bama exploit the seams in our zones was fuggin brutal, but Walters has made some huge plays this year, be it picks or on the blitz.

The secondary, in general, is the one area I'm concerned about getting a talent upgrade. Hawk brought in a lot of numbers there that first class, and I'm not sure how many of those kids will pan out. Getting Woods or Smith at S this year seems pretty critical, but cb should be a priority the next recruiting cycle.

Helfrich and Grimes read into their success against the corn a bit too much with this series. I don't mind setting up the occasional handoff to the receiver in motion when Hawkins is under center- it's a good way to get the ball into Smith's hands, but otherwise it's like you said it takes a way too long for the play to develop.

As the young ol develops I'm hoping the buffs will run a little more from under center, and get Scott, Gates, et.al. going north and south.

    Isn't Ryan Walters a safety?

I don't think we're hurting there, unless you mean depth wise.

Yeah...I'm not too sure why you guys are complaining about safety issues. Sure, our secondary was hurting in the first quarter, but I like Walters and Dykes. Both are quality players, and I think Walters should be on the Thorpe list next year. He's a solid player - one of my favorites on the team. He came in as a highly regarded QB (or athlete) and switched to whatever position GB thought he could be used. These players also had to deal with our old DB coach, who apparently was an asshole.

There were some mistakes made in the secondary, particularly in the first quarter, but I do not think safety is a position of concern next year. CB will be - we really need someone to step up alongside Burney.

DE needs help, but I'm excited to see Herrod and Obi start playing.

Walters is pretty decent, but the problem is at the other safety position with Dykes. Depth is an issue as well.

Herrod, Obi and Perri should be a pretty good group next year. Along with Nicholas and the Rabid Goldfish on the inside, we will have a pretty strong D-line. The linebackers will be good too. Burton and Sipili coming back, along with some of the new guys (Katoa, Major). If we can generate a decent pass rush from the front four, the DB's will have a better chance for success.

what bummed me out is a standard fake might have worked. this one was dead in the water and we didn't need many yards. AGHHHHHHHHHHHH

We've been practicing with the ladie's soccer team. Thats a new play we've come up with. Pretty effective, I thought. It got us 6 or 7 yards on the return.

He's a decent tackler, but he's not a very good safety.
