Tad Boyle and the new BB commits

I didn't want to clutter up the threads for each of the two new commits but it looks like some people are questioning their potential.

I'm not an expert on who is going to turn out as a college player and both Scott and Gordon have some legit questions about them. To start with you have to wonder about any kid coming out of Colorado considering the lack of quality competition faced here and the limited number of guys who turn out to be legit D-1 players.

You can also look at Scott being a pretty skinny guy for a PF and Gordon being a tweener on a team that is good but not great.

I'm looking atthe other side of it. Both guys are young and still have room to grow. Scott is a pretty wiry guy at 200lbs and 6'8." It is not unreasonable to think he will grow at least another inch and more likely two or three putting him at 6'10" or taller. Add the normal 15-20 lbs that go with going from 17-19 and another 15 in the weight room and we have a 230lb athlete.

Gordon is 6'6"-6'7" and athletic as well. Add some growth and he becomes a match-up problem for other teams like the ones that gave us problems this year. Guys that are too big for a wing to cover and to athletic for the bigs to stay with.

This may sound like a bunch of wishful thinking if we hadn't already seen some of it. Burks coming out of high school was a skinny 6'2" kid who couldn't hold up to a stiff breeze, now he's got a shot at the league. Roberson was over an inch shorter and skinnier when Boyle got him to commit.

The big thing I'm looking at is what Boyle did with guys at UNC. He took a team that was the laughing stock of it's league and when he left last year they were on the verge of winning that same league and going to the dance. This year his same players are looking at being a favorite to win that league.

What brings this to my attention is a brief article in today's post about Neil Kingman a forward at UNC who virtually nobody wanted out of HS. Boyle and staff have developed him into a quality player who would have helped the Buffs this year if he were here. He wouldn't be a star but he is good enough to contribute to a winner.

Point is that Boyle has a history of developing players, unlike Ricardo who recruited some top flight prospects who never quite got any better while here. I look at the rankings of the three guys who are coming from Cali next season and can see that Boyle can recruit highly sought out players. This tells me that he isn't going Hawkins and settling for leftovers. The other option is that he sees in these two guys players who can develop into winning types of players.

I'm looking forward to the future of this program with coach Boyle. I could be way off but I think we are headed for some fun seasons in the near future.

Its a valid concern, although the last player from Colorado Springs that we passed on is currently the 2nd leading scorer in the ACC.

FYI, those three players had a combined 3 scholarship offers from "BCS" schools other then CU.

You might want to go back to the profiles on those guys to look at the offers. Booker doesn't have any major conference offers but he does have offers from some quality mid-majors. Cain on the other hand had offers from Boston College out of the Big East (Major BB conference if you are counting) and San Diego State which has been top 10 for much of this year. He also has offers from a couple of other schools that have been recent tourney teams.

Dinwiddle has offers from Arizona State (PAC 12) Northwestern (Big 10) Oregon (PAC 12) Georgetown (Big East) and San Diego State again.

All three were variously rated in or close to the top 10 in California. By any account these are three quality prospects coming in. Certainly not left overs or minor conference players. They aren't McDonald's All-Americans or top 150 prospects but they are legit major college recruits, a step up from what we had in the past few years on a consistent basis.

BC is in the ACC

Not according rivals or scout or espn. They only confirm the Oregon one. And im not bashing the players. Im happy to have them and think they will do well for us. I just brought up there offers because you said that getting them was proof that we can land "highly sought after" players, but I wouldnt consider any of those 3 to be highly sought after.

JRK scout and rivals aren't the bible especially with basketball once someone signs they let the profile die.

true, but i dont remember dinwiddie mentioning anyone but harvard and cu. georgetown is a pretty damn big offer to leave out.

Keeping the home talent at home. Gotta build this thing just like Embo is doing with football. Would have been nice to have that Colorado kid that went to Gonzaga on the team right now...

It's not that hard to search online about anything you don't know but want to know. Especially we have google.

I did that, and found something interesting. Seems like UCLA also offered him.

According to here, he also picked ASU's offer

I am not saying he is next MJ or something, but saying that "those three players had a combined 3 scholarship offers from "BCS" schools" is totally unfair and misleading.

Let me introduce you to the snarky way to say what you did:

Bouldin did graduate from Gonzaga, and CU had no chance with him. We didn't seem to really recruit Jackson for some reason...

MtnBuff - I like your enthusiasm, but I don't share it. He's the coach, so I give Boyle credit. I'll reserve harsh critisicm...but I'm skeptical of these last two commits to say the least. One thing to point out though - Burks was NOT a 6-2 nobody when he graduated HS. He may have been under the rader leading into his senior year, causing him to be an under the radar prospect...but by the time he graduated, people knew about him. I also don't think he grew 4 inches his senior season...I think it was more over a few seasons??...regardless, your point is taken. Yes, these kids could grow...but that's being pretty optimisitc.
