I didn't want to clutter up the threads for each of the two new commits but it looks like some people are questioning their potential.
I'm not an expert on who is going to turn out as a college player and both Scott and Gordon have some legit questions about them. To start with you have to wonder about any kid coming out of Colorado considering the lack of quality competition faced here and the limited number of guys who turn out to be legit D-1 players.
You can also look at Scott being a pretty skinny guy for a PF and Gordon being a tweener on a team that is good but not great.
I'm looking atthe other side of it. Both guys are young and still have room to grow. Scott is a pretty wiry guy at 200lbs and 6'8." It is not unreasonable to think he will grow at least another inch and more likely two or three putting him at 6'10" or taller. Add the normal 15-20 lbs that go with going from 17-19 and another 15 in the weight room and we have a 230lb athlete.
Gordon is 6'6"-6'7" and athletic as well. Add some growth and he becomes a match-up problem for other teams like the ones that gave us problems this year. Guys that are too big for a wing to cover and to athletic for the bigs to stay with.
This may sound like a bunch of wishful thinking if we hadn't already seen some of it. Burks coming out of high school was a skinny 6'2" kid who couldn't hold up to a stiff breeze, now he's got a shot at the league. Roberson was over an inch shorter and skinnier when Boyle got him to commit.
The big thing I'm looking at is what Boyle did with guys at UNC. He took a team that was the laughing stock of it's league and when he left last year they were on the verge of winning that same league and going to the dance. This year his same players are looking at being a favorite to win that league.
What brings this to my attention is a brief article in today's post about Neil Kingman a forward at UNC who virtually nobody wanted out of HS. Boyle and staff have developed him into a quality player who would have helped the Buffs this year if he were here. He wouldn't be a star but he is good enough to contribute to a winner.
Point is that Boyle has a history of developing players, unlike Ricardo who recruited some top flight prospects who never quite got any better while here. I look at the rankings of the three guys who are coming from Cali next season and can see that Boyle can recruit highly sought out players. This tells me that he isn't going Hawkins and settling for leftovers. The other option is that he sees in these two guys players who can develop into winning types of players.
I'm looking forward to the future of this program with coach Boyle. I could be way off but I think we are headed for some fun seasons in the near future.
