This is a much-needed shot in the arm for Big East football.
Good move for TCU since they'll move to an AQ, but the travel costs will kill them for all other sports. I don't see how this Big East set-up will be viable, long-term. Plus, this gives the Big East 17 basketball schools. :wow:
And perhaps the death knell for the MWC.
I can hear Boise State's AD screaming in the background.
I'm not so sure on travel costs. TCU wasn't able to take a bus to any MWC games as it was. And all the Big East programs are in major metros. It's probably cheaper to fly into Philadelphia to play Villanova than it is to get to Laramie for a Wyoming game. At least it can't be any more expensive. Plus, the Big East pays its members a lot more than the MWC. Easy call for TCU.
Regarding the 17 schools for basketball, they have to add another program now. Or drop a basketball-only school. Or split the conference.
From what it says in the article and from what I've read in recent weeks about this topic, it sounds like the football-only schools would consider breaking off into a separate conference. Another option is to add another school to get to 18 teams, maybe UCF or Temple.
As for travel, Dallas probably isn't much farther from the northeastern schools than Tampa is.
 lambnation is self destructing.
This is really good for TCU. Worst week in Boise history, ever. Lose to Nevada, their "new" conference falls apart, and DH moves back to town.
This would be a good time for Lambnation to let go of their hate and join the dark side.
+1. Time to merge the WAC and MWC, to become............wait for it...............the WAC!
Yep! Without BYU or TCU, the conference is going to die. Boise is the last best team and they will leave shortly and never actually play a MWC game. My guess is that the phone rang off of the hook down at the WAC offices in Denver earlier this morning.
Where would Boise go? The MWC is dead
The Mac 10 will be wanting to get to 12 sooner or later. Boise and BYU in the North?
i guess the Big XII must have shut the Frogs down without much hesitation or consideration. so much for that theory.
Air Force is more likely than Boise State. (I'm serious.)
Good catch two national programs with better TV numbers.
Great catch, left them out and should not have. I am sure that this little conference falling apart issue may make Calhoun a little more aggressive in his pursuit of other jobs. We shall see.
In spite of the "challenges" with travel, logistics etc. this seems like a no brainer getting into a BCS conference.
Very good piece on the TCU move and how both the WAC and MWC have been crippled. They are now at a point where AQ status is a memory, they are just trying to survive, and are looking at a smaller media contract divided among more schools.
Brilliant maneuvering by Larry Scott to destroy the market competition in the mountain and pacific time zones ahead of media negotiations.
Credit to Left Hand Buff on Rivals for finding this blog. fwiw, my impression has been that the San Jose Mercury News is consistently the best source for Pac-12 happenings.
thanks, good to know.
I would just like to tell our neighbors up in Ft Collins during this difficult time...
This is a glorious day for all the ram "fans" that only really care about hating CU and give CSU attention for only 1 day of the year. Guess that is coming back to bite you in the ass now.
Who will leave the big texas conference next?.
Will the pac get bigger?.
Wonder if this move will mean that the other conferences will take another step towards the super conferences...or will they all just stay where they are? Guess there really aren't many exciting options out there in terms of additions for the Big 10+2, Pac, or Mack 10.
So - do you think the fact that Texass sucked this year factored into the Mack 10 not adding TCU? Maybe it was simply the fact that they already own the Dallas market as has been well documented...or do you think it was because they don't want to get kicked around by a "little sister" Texas school. :smile2:
Regretting that move now Boise?
The new WAC is gonna be considered better than the Mountain Worst now.
Not if Nevada, Fresno, and Hawaii still decide to move to the MWC.
Ok maybe not as bad as the WAC, but it is stilll a major blow to the Mountain worst. Lose their 3 powers in one season!
MWC wanted to go to 12 teams and have a conference championship game. Losing TCU, BYU, Utah make this much harder to pull off.
With Boise, Nevada, and Hawaii they still have the best of mid-majors in the western half of the country. They aren't happy with it but it's the best option those schools have right now.
They may have to add Fresno. They should still have a school most years with a good enough record to get an at-large in the BCS.
Strange move - but you can't turn down a BCS slot. TCU does have the same lack of fan support that plagues every Big East school in football except WVU, so at least they'll fit in one way.
Will be interesting seeing Protestant Texans move to a Catholic Northeastern conference. Can you say cultural divide?
I think you mixed up your schools. Fresno is already in the MWC. Hawaii is not, at least not in all sports.
Separate names with a comma.
