LOS ANGELES - The University of Colorado tennis team showed improvement over even tougher competition, falling 6-1 to No. 5 UCLA on Saturday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

UCLA leads the series 3-0, facing CU on its own courts for the first time since 1982. Last season, the Buffaloes claimed two points against then-ranked No. 1 UCLA in Boulder. The Bruins boast two ranked doubles teams and five ranked singles players, and improve to 11-2 overall, 2-0 Pac-12 Conference this season, while the Buffs fall to 6-8, 1-3 Pac-12 after just its second conference road match.

"This was another performance that allowed us to grow and to learn," CU head coach Nicole Kenneally said. "We competed hard, though today's score didn't necessarily show that competiveness. Our players were out there competing hard. We have Cal and Stanford next weekend, and we look forward to playing them on their home courts. Winde did a fantastic job, and Julyette had her opportunity. Overall, it was another day, and another opportunity to learn and grow, which I think we're continuing to do as a team. We look forward to practicing this week and to using what we learned this weekend and applying it to next weekend."

Junior Winde Janssens had another day for the books. She earned her second career win over a ranked opponent and won her team-best 14th match of the season. Janssens' 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-5) win over No. 86 Pamela Montez helped the Buffs' to their first Pac-12 road point of the season. Janssens continues to stand out for Colorado, falling only three times this spring, and holding a team-best 3-1 record in the Pac-12. She also shows strength in three-setters, winning a team-high 12 three-set matches in her career, including six this season. Montez is the highest ranked opponent she has defeated. Janssens earned her first win over a ranked opponent last week over No. 111 Desirae Krawczyk of Arizona State.

Juylette Steur also had a strong performance on Saturday. Facing her fourth straight ranked opponent, Steur fought against No. 5 Robin Anderson, battling in a 6-4, 7-5 defeat.

The Buffs continue their five-match California road trip, taking on two more top 20 Pac-12 opponents and their final non-conference competitor. CU faces No. 15 Cal on Friday, March 22 at 2:30 p.m. (MDT) and No. 16 Stanford on Saturday, March 23 at 2 p.m. (MDT). The Buffs conclude the trip with a visit to San Francisco on Monday, March 25 at 2 p.m. (MDT).
