    Remember the 1985 Denver Nuggets?

Head coach Doug Moe? Alex English, Dan Issel, T.R. Dunn, and Bill Hanzlik? Those fantastically gaudy uniforms with the outline of downtown Denver? I’m not a regular NBA fan, but I do start to pay attention once the playoffs begin, and the ‘09 Denver Nuggets have been on a roll. In watching the coverage this past week, there were numerous references to the Nuggets making it to the Western Conference finals for the first time since the 1984-‘85 season.

What do the ‘85 Nuggets have to do with the Colorado football Buffs?

    Check this out:

In 1985, when the Nuggets made their run, the Buffs were in the off-season, with their head coach, Bill McCartney, heading into his fourth season.
In 2009, with the Nuggets making a similar run, the Buffs are in the off-season, with their head coach, Dan Hawkins, heading into his fourth season.

In 1985, Bill McCartney was 0-for-3 in producing winning seasons.
In 2009, Dan Hawkins is 0-for-3 in producing winning seasons.

In his first season, Bill McCartney won two games. He doubled that total the second season, only to suffer a relapse (in terms of victories) in his third campaign.
In his first season, Dan Hawkins won two games. He tripled that total the second season, only to suffer a relapse (in terms of victories) in his third campaign.

Despite his losing record, Bill McCartney received a contract extension during his third season.
Despite his losing record, Dan Hawkins received a contract extension during his third season.

In 1985, after the Denver Nuggets made the conference finals, Bill McCartney had his first winning season (7-5), and did not have another losing season as the Buffs’ head coach.
In 2009, after the Denver Nuggets made the conference finals, Dan Hawkins .....

    I’m just sayin’ ....

Dan better do better than 7-5 or he won't ever have another losing season for the Buffs....but, for a different reason than Mac.

    kidding mostly, but still.

I like the Nugs chances better this time around than in 85, too.

7-5 will be fine for Hawk, he's not going anywhere with that record

    Good stuff Montana! Rep given...

And yes, 7-5 would be good enough to keep Hawk IMO.

7-5 will keep Hawk employed, but I would be pretty disappointed in that record.

That is my feeling too. I should have said that. With our schedule, 8-10 wins will be fine by me, less than 8 will be a disappoinment. 7 will keep him here, hell realistically, just a bowl birth will keep him here, I hope thats not the case though.

Do you really think Hawk gets fired if the Buffs go 6-7 with a bowl game loss? I think he stays with an even worse record, but I don't even want to think about that.

He will still be here if that happens, but yes, lets not go there.

The big deviations that will occur start now....when the Nuggs win a championship and the buffs win more than 7 games
