Looking at the current roster, which player (please: don't take the opportunity for cheap shots at the HC), most epitomizes what you want in a CU Buffalo?

I've thought long and hard about this one and have to say it's tough, and not, unfortunately, because there are so many. Attributes I pine for: athleticism, swagger (not bs ego, but cold confidence and a mean streak), emotion, and a consuming drive to overcome all obstacles and win.

    My pick: MTM

Scotty McKnight - I'm really hoping Clemons kicks some butt this year and Scotty gets to line up against a #2 CB or a nickleback.

    Ray PolK

From the time he committed he has been a Buff.

    - He could have gone else where when Darrel Scott signed.
    - Made a position change to help the team where it was needed.
    - Athletic
    - Tough

Hope he has a great year this year.

Bryce Givens, B.J. Beatty, Polk, Rippy...these are guys who play like they mean it, there may be others who I haven't seen it from yet. Mac's teams were chock full of guys who weren't about to let another team beat them without one hell of a fight. IMO, that is the biggest thing missing from the Hawk era Buff teams.

Go ahead and rip me all you want, but one guy I've been impressed with from day 1, is Cody Hawkins. During his Redshirt season, he was actively engaged on the sideline (unlike a few other QBs that I won't mention, but initials are, Brian White). He's represented CU well both on and off the field. It's not his fault that at times, he was our best QB option. All he's done is work his butt off to try and be the best QB he can be. From everything I've seen, the kid is a leader and a great teammate. He bleeds black and gold. Is he as athletic as I want our QB to be? No. But he's been put in an incredibly tough spot, and I think he's handled it with nothing but class.

Spot on. Making an impact on the field and in the classroom (academic all-conference).

Same as Highflyer's pick. Marquez Herrod. I love all the Buffs, but if there ever was a guy you could give just that little bit extra for, it is him.

Herrod. How can you not be impressed by what he has overcome.

I also think Hansen is a great kid. He has been jerked around by this staff and continues to just work hard.

.... WEllllllllll... Honestly I love Cody... I know he lacks the in game talent, but he has such heart... He's stuck by the program, he's stuck by his dad, His work ethic whether on film or what he brings to the school has been outstanding. He tries so hard and never gives up. I wish him the best of luck with everything. Give him Nick Hirchmans athletic ability and I say you've got a Heisman winner

If one of the attributes is athleticism as rodrigo has suggested, then Cody obviously cannot be considered. While Cody may be a lot like Rudy, he should have been treated like Rudy and only got in the game to mop up if we were way ahead.

Good call, I remember reading that write up on him. He had a rough go of it growing up and is
doing well for himself. He has my vote.

Huh? He was our best option at the position.

this... i believe cody has given every ounce of himself to this team...however we have better options now... and as aggravating as it has been to watch him play.... he, at least to me epitomizes everything right with the buffs..

May have been our best option, but not a D1 player. I guess that speaks to how desperate we were at the position. This obviously occurred in part because no other QB recruits wanted to come when the coaches son is on the team.

Anyway this off topic from thread. I was simply suggesting that he did not have one of attributes rodrigo suggested.

I echo Herrod. Great story and sounds like a great kid.

Strange that a guy who is "not a D1 player" would end up holding the career passing yardage record at Colorado....

I'm a huge fan of Cody and Scotty M. as human beings and as members of the CU football team, and I truly believe both has given his all as a Buff. You might even say both have over-achieved given their physical limitations and gone well-beyond expectations playing on guts, hard work and determination alone.

But I wasn't asking who should get the Buffalo Heart Award.

If decent human beings who give it their all - bring their lunch pails, etc. etc. - but in the end can't quite match up on the field is the epitome of want we want, then I say keep Dan Hawkins as our coach because that's what we've got.

I don't see Cody and Scotty as similar. I can see Scotty being a slot receiver in the NFL. (maybe the jets ) While I see Cody being a coach at some level.

Agreed. But if Scotty plays on Sundays it's cuz he's worked harder and gone farther with less then many more naturally gifted guys. What CU needs are guys with that kind of character... and some serious skills/speed/athletic ability.

    1. Herrod (great story; incredible that he survived his youth)

    2. Celestine (took care of personal life and elected to come back, as a walk-on

    3. (Tie) MTM and Miller (injuries, but simply won't give up)

    5. Stevens (walk-on who has contributed)

I love all of our Buffs. Some of the guys like Ryan Miller could have gone anywhere, but chose CU. There's something about Cunningham that makes me think he's special too.

But for raw physical talent, drive, work ethic and loyalty (all the things that make a great Buff) I'm going to throw another vote to Ray Polk.
