There is so much focus on the final plays of the game, people forget how horrible the field was. It was a sand based artificial turf. Prior to games, the manufacturer's instructions were that it needed to be watered to moisten the sand which is what Missouri did before every game. Well, except when CU showed up. They intentionally let the sand dry out so that it was like running on marbles. If you will remember, there were a multitude of plays where our pitch guy got the pitch and went to cut up a wide open field for a huge gain only to have his feet slide out from under him. It was an absolute travesty which deserved a lot more attention than it got because of the way the game ended. We would have won that game by double digits if not for the turf.

Anyway, listening to Pritch on with CJ and Klatt and with Mizzou coming up in a week and a half, I figured the "fifth down" game would come up sooner or later.

Yep, I remember that vividly. That game is not close on a proper surface.

I used to feel bad for Mizzou losing that way. But with all the pastings they've administered to us lately, I say WOO HOO, glad it was against Mizzou!

The field was called "Omniturf." I know that Plati and many other CU folks counted 80-90 slips by Buffs on the day. Pritchard didn't seem affected though, he had a long reverse for a TD and a long reception for TD, blowing by everyone on both plays. CJ started (and finished) the game, an injured Hagan came in for one three-and-out and slipped twice.

The fifth down always seems to follow us around like a dark cloud and becomes more of a pain in the ass to listen to everytime we play mizzou

It sucks but look at the bright side, after we put up with it one more time (although it will be the worst this time), we will not have to put up with it for a LONG time.

i've heard Mac on the radio a dozen times explain how this went down. MU fan needs to let it go. not like beating us senseless the last 3 years has eased their spite.

It was the only way they could shut down CU all day. It was pathetic. Like CU was playing on ice.

Hell, if Fauria doesn't fall down untouched trying to turn upfield on that last drive, CU scores without ever going through any of that last series....

I would like to think that with every B12 game we have left this year that part of the motivation would be "it will be your last chance to get a W against this team for a very long time" Of coursethe other 11 teams could use the same motivation

I'm interested to see how the MU fans remind the Buffs of 5th Down one last time.

Misery fans rightly can't stomach their total foolish appearance in this summer's realignment events. They have to take it out on somebody, and we are ripe for ripping.

I like how MU is so pissed about this. Almost as if we ruined their chance for the MNC that year. **** happens. I don't like that it happened, but it did.

Goodbye assholes and have fun in the Mack-10!

It's all BS, forget the friggin game already. Has any team in the history of athletics given back a win because of a blown call? **** Mizzou, **** Jizla and **** anybody else that still mentions it.

^^^^This. We didn't commit the error. The refs did. We won the game fair and square.

It's things like this that have me so pissed that we kept our coach for the last year of playing in this conference. Would like nothing more than to be leaving the conference with the proper finger of choice salute to idots like Mizzou and the rest of them. We have the kids to do it, but they can't overcome the coaching.

Care to share what your point is instead of being a smart ass. This topic was going to come up before the Mizzou game no matter what.

This is one of the best accounts you'll find of the fifth-down sequence. The best (and most important) part of all is that Coach Mac knew exactly what was going on and took advantage of the situation:

..even though it should have been third down. Mac saw the error and told the ref "we're going to run three plays." No team in that situation is going to go up to the ref and say, "It's actually third down, we're only going to run two plays."

Get over it mizery fans! Look at the scores of the last few cu v. mizery games. 8,000,000 to 3.

I remember watching the Mac show after that and he counted yeah, near 100 slips. Anecdotally, I met a guy who was on that team, a lb, forget his name right now. I asked him if they sanded the field, he laughed and said yeah. Whatever, we won -- deal with it.

I don't understand. Mizzery was wearing, like, Forrest Gump special shoes or something that kept them from having the same problem?

Their shoe cleats were more appropriate to the conditions - ours, not so much

Plus, the conditions kind of "leveled the playing field" (no pun intended) in regards to speed and our option style of offense.

According to a story Dave Plati tends to recycle every year (and excuse me if I'm remembering it incorrectly, the last time I read it was probably 2007) there were special cleats designed to be used on this "omniturf" crap they installed, but they neglected to tell anyone at CU about this fact. So... in a sense, yes, Missouri was wearing like Forrest Gump special shoes, while the Buffs were wearing like Dick Van **** anti-cleats.
