a starting qb gets way more credit than deserved when things go well, and way more blame when things don't go well.

the fan favorite, unless you have a god at qb, is always the second string qb.

it is just how it is.

add in the bonus of having a qb whose father is the hc and the criticism goes nuclear.

here are the facts, whether some of you want to hear them or not:

cody has a great head for the game and he has all the intangibles you want in a qb. what he lacks, which should be obvious to everyone, is athleticism.

he can't beat you with his feet on most plays. he doesn't have the arm to bail the team out of trouble.

but, if he has time to throw, he is everything you want in a qb.

this is a team game. it was a team loss. had we had a great qb, CU *might* have won that game. cody made a few big errors, but the line got abused all day and the fsu coverage was generally great.

what everyone wants is a superman at qb. but, like most d-1 teams, we do not have a superman at qb. we have a guy with excellent intangibles and very average physical ability. teams that have more bodies can win a lot of games with a guy like cody. we don't have the line or the receivers to do that yet. so, deal with it.

throwing all this vitriol at a college soph who has done nothing but give his all for CU is effing wrong.

now then, on to the nepotism bullpucks... dan hawkins is an ambitious, highly compensated, and very competitive guy. he is driven. if you think he'd play cody ahead of a more talented guy, you are freaking insane. and, you've never been around high level coaches. they want to win. hawk would play satan at qb ahead of cody if he thought he'd give him a better chance to win and if they could keep satan eligible.

finally, keep in mind that our Buffs were *this close* to landing landry jones at qb. hawkins WANTS the best qb he can get in here. the staff just hasn't landed the big bluechip qb yet. it is coming, i suspect. i don't know if hansen or ballenger are the long term answer yet, but i know for damned sure they aren't the answer now. not with this team and this schedule... if either of those guys were ready, they'd play. neither seriously challenged cody at all.

so, we play the cards we are dealt. we can win a lot of games with this guy. but, if he can't put on superman's cape and pull our arses from the fire whenever we need it, let's not decide he has no value. that isn't fair.

He is a Big 12 quarterback. That generally means he should be able to hit a WIDE OPEN tight end. I understand a lot of what you're saying, but Cody has to improve if we're going to be as successful as we want to be.

And I absolutely disagree that FSU's coverage was "great." In fact, I thought their secondary looked pretty ****ty to be honest.

I played intramurals once. I hit a wide open guy right in the chest!

because cody is the only big 12 quarterback that is involved in the drop of a ball?

    what do you mean, exactly?

What the **** do you think I mean? We play in the Big 12 conference, pretty much considered the second best conference in the country, full of outstanding QBs. If we are going to win games in this conference, Cody has to make some plays. That includes hitting receivers when they are wide open for touchdowns.

as i posted in another thread, his timing went to crap because he got nailed hard early and often. the real and imagined pressure gave him a serious case of happy feet. it happens. had our ol held up a little better, he makes those throws that he rushed and overthrew. he doesn't have the arm to be able to just wing it. he needs the offense to do its job.

he had a bad game, but it isn't all on him at all.

It is not all on him, but I have to say I am not seeing much of a progression from last season. He still stares down receivers and rarely checks off. We clearly have offensive line issues, but he has got to start sensing rushes better. I'm not saying we're the most talented offensive team out there (we're not), but sometimes the QB has to make a couple plays to bail us out of jams.

Not to mention, who is the backup QB? Do we even know?

Tough to say fans are favoring the backup QB when I don't think a backup QB has even been named...

I think most people are concerned that Cody is the best QB we've got.

    Agreed with everything.

Cody is not playing well and he is overthrowing wide open guys too much.

The FSU D was very beatable today. They were not the great D that most had raved about all week. We had our chances. We ran on em and we would have shredded their secondary if we had a QB.

and sometimes that qb needs help from his supporting cast. the ol could help him out some. the recievers can hold on to passes that are catchable.

i will note that you appear to mostly pin this on cody. if that is not what you are saying, chill. if you were tempted to pin it on him like a sacrificial goat, then we have an issue.

EVERY ****ing qb puts balls on the ground. even in the big xii. you can act as if you are aware of that fact.

Good to know. Every QB misses multiple wide open receivers for TDs every game. I never knew that, but apparently I am watching the wrong games. Thanks for setting me straight.

way i saw it, cody was NOT the only one who needs improvement. my point of contention is that there is enough need to improve to go around to merit pinning the tail on cody ONLY.

edit: and as a secondary point, NO ONE is ever satisfied with their qb. bradford put up 199 yards in the 1st qtr with 2 td passes and ubt was acting as if it were the end of the world.

    evers? reallyz?

it sucked that they were missed. it is something to improve. but those passes were only part of the bigger picture that needs to be shored up.

****. that would so suck for you. then you would lose all the fun of acting as if it were a singular issue.

he such an easy target, however.

he's the coach's kid. he's not that big. and he's the qb. it is easy to blame him.

the fact that our ol couldn't keep their monsters out of the backfield and the fact that our receivers can't hold the ball or get open (for the most part) had nothing to do with the loss, apparently.

he had a bad game. so did the rest of the team. folks need to deal with it without basically going to hate-con 4.

LB, big games turn on two or three plays a game. Cody missed three WIDE OPEN RECEIVERS! TWO FOR SURE TD'S! I'm still bummed.

LB you know I am Black and Gold through and through but those passes are elementary. I understand your defense, Im with you for the most part but like many have said, if we want to move to the big time, those passes need to be on target.

At some point, we need Cody to progress as a QB. He has now started 17 games in college football. He is no longer a novice here. Yeah, he is going to need some help from those around him, but it is not too much to ask that a starting QB make some plays once in a while. And yes, that includes days when those around you are struggling.

rest assured, i will not soon forget the extent to which your ego became more important than common sense and you it under the bus, along with the buff kids.

i got that you are "bummed". you did not get that half of chat was asking you to lay off the personal attacks. that makes me more confrontational than bummed.

i hear you. however, we ALL knew we were not "big time" this year. so the sacrificial goat thing can be put to rest before it is even started. landry would have been a sweet get.

in an ideal world, those passes would have connected. in an ideal world, passes would not have been dropped. in an ideal world, fsu would not have been up on cody's ass all day. in an ideal world, we would have had three pick six's, as their offense (fsu) sucked balls.

alas, it is what it is. if we are going to be productive, i figure that we need not place ALL blame on one kid. certainly not with comments like "hawk won't switch him out (cody) bc then he would not get laid tonight."

I think BB's criticism of Cody is very fair. I haven't seen the "intangibles." But he's the best we got.

The criticism does not come because he's the QB, it's not because he's the coaches son, it is because, at times, the college game looks beyond his abilities.
