Allowing the other team to convert a 3rd and 6 or longer. Oh, man does that kill me. That's a sure fire way to lose a football game. Early Hawk teams had a real problem in this area.

Missed field goals. It's bad enough when a drive flames out when it's close enough to scoring a touchdown that you can kick a field goal. But to then miss the field goal?

Giving up long runs. Hate it. Ohhhhh, I hate it. If I had my way, no opponent would ever get off a run of more than 2 yards.

Interceptions/fumbles in the end zone. Any turnover is bad, but when you're about to score, that's a killer.

those TR scrambles for kansas two years ago still kill me. his two runs won that game for kansas that day.

containment is key for me. i cant stand a QB making a play where all of the secondary does thier jobs and the QB breaks containment for a big gain. that is just as much of a killer as your list above. not that i dissagree with any of it. i would just toss that in there.

Absolutely agree on this one but the issue has been around longer than Hawk. The first time I really remember it driving me nuts was the 2002 Alamo Bowl against Wisconsin. Seemed like the converted a bunch of third and longs late in the game. Every since then I fear third and 9 much more than third and 1.

Those runs didnt bother me as much when we played WV because everyone knew that at least once Pat White was going to do something, he always does. But when guys like Reesing, Daniel and others did it, that really got me.

Also, not being able to convert anything 3rd and shorter than 3 needs to change. Those should be automatic this year

hopefully we see less of: Buffs take possession around their 35. 3 quick first downs to get inside opponent territory and more or less sniffing FG range at miminum.

    1st down: incomplete pass
    2nd down: 3 yard run
    3rd down: jump offsides, 3 and 17
3rd down (replayed): sack, 8 yard loss

4th and a million, self-destruct, drive fails, out of FG range.

punt into endzone, touchback. snap the ball on opponents 35-40 on first down, give it back without points on the board on the 20.

It was going on well before the Alamo Bowl. That was the signiture of a Vince Noclue defense.

yes. the during the last two years of RN, the 3rd and long give up was constant.

oh, the other thing that i remember from RN was taking a delay of game after a TO. that happened constantly and was absolutly in-ex-cusible!!!!! :bang:

Less entertaining that sack's rant, but...

    he's absolutely right.

If you have good 3rd down efficiency on defense, good red zone efficiency on offense, and avoid bad turnovers you're going to win a lot of football games.

Consistantly missing FG's or bouncing them off the uprights inside the 10 yd line is NOT acceptable!

any home game where the final score results in us losing something like 17-6 or 14-10. I am sick of having an inept offense show up when the defense is doing everything in its power to keep us in it. That type of game has happened at least once a year, if not more, since Hawk has joined up.

IntheBuff's edit Going for 2 points before the mid to late part of the 4th qtr!!!!!!

This is right on the money. My observation shows that coaches much too often get tricky/crafty with the arithmetic and go for 2 points and fail, when later in the game that 1 point FREEBIE would make a huge difference. I'm sure one of our IT Staff here could run the regressions on this and show this is the dumbest move ever. Just like when Hurdle used to bunt with men on 1st and 2nd and nobody out. There's been books written (specifically buy supernerd Bill james) that prove the key is to NOT MAKE OUTS. Don't ever give up an out unless the pitcher is at bat - period. Similiarly, get your points and forget about all the math scenarios until you are down to 1-2 possessions. Take the friggin' 1 point freebie!!!!!!

Try 4th and long! Vince Okruch refused to blitz the Badger QB and the kid had ten seconds to find WRs who were open on two separate 4th downs with 15+ yds. to go!

    Damned VO!

A wide open WR, and the pass 10 ft over his head........a fusker pulling out the kick of his life......not one, not two, but three passes knocked down at the line, in the same series......but hey new season, sure the coaches have worked on all of this.....GO BUFFS!!!!!!

that play we run way too often where the QB throws the ball into the 10th row.

Our D rushing 4 and the opposing team's quarterback having all day to throw the ball.

Sadly, I think I will continue to be pissed about this one...:pissed3:

I'm okay with the second point.....

Disagree with the first, tho. It's pretty solid strategy in an "X and goal" situation to run a pass (preferrably, play action) on first down. Reason - if you run on first down and don't make it, the D is expecting pass on 2nd down. Play action is then a worthless cause.

Another year of the worst QB play in conference would probably piss me off to no end this year.

I would also like to see the team put points up more consistently when inside the other team's 30. That has been a huge problem.
