So Utah used to be the Redskins, huh?

Love the old ads -- what a trip!

Looking forward to rebuilding the CU-UU rivalry. I think it'll be a fun one.

I was looking through the program and one Buff football name caught my eye. Anyone know who Jack Swigert is? One of our 17 distinguished alums who have flown in space. Coincidentally, he's also one of only 24 people who have flown on the moon. How cool is that?

Oh junk! That was the character Gary Sinese played in Apollo 13. Good times.

Actually, Gary Sinise played Ken Mattingly. He was the command module pilot but there was a risk of him developing measles so he got replaced by Jack Swigert, who was played by Kevin Bacon.

I was in Washington dc recently and saw a statue of Jack swigert in the Capitol visitor center. Each state gets two statues in the Capitol - swigert is one of Colorado's. The same statue model is also at denver's airport

Didn't know that swigert played football for the buffs!

funny thing about the old stadium, are the two staggered-in-grade retaining walls between campus and Boulder Creek. the one that's north of Folsom's east stands and the one that's currently north and below the coaches parking lot at the Dal. they are still there, but not quite as spanky new as they appear in that photo and, today, all the mortar is pretty non-existent. but, it's interesting mason work nonetheless.

for old Folsom shots, i bought my pops this print a few years ago for his B-day....he loved it. hangs in his office next to his diplomas.

    Great find.

I alway like looking at old programs like this one. Especially the ads.

I always wonder what some of the people whos pictures are in them are doing now or what they went on to accomplish.

A couple of other famous Buffs on that 1952 team that are listed in the program:

Tom Brookshier - former NFL player, longtime CBS NFL analyst who passed away recently

Carroll Hardy - only player to pinch hit for Ted Williams, ran the college draft under John Ralston in the 70's for the Broncos (where the Broncos had some of their best picks - Gradashar, Tom Jackson, Louie Wright, etc)

It's cool to see some of that geneology heritage in Salt Lake being applied to football. I like how UU makes .pdf files of old game programs available on line. It was fun seeing the Redskin players photographed in their helmets without face masks. I noticed one California kid on the CU roster, and NONE from Texas. The offense diagrams featuring half backs is so foreign now. Things have changed. Anyone know where I can get a bottle of NEHI soda?

Swigert was on the ill fated Apollo 13 flight. Playboy Jack was the one with the clap who was getting pretty frail near the end of the flight. He went on to serve in the US Congress representing Colorado's 6th district. He lived a full life.

    Awesome look into the past.

The program was $0.25, reserved seats $3.00, and general admission $1.75. That equals $2.04, $24.45, and $14.25 in todays dollar.

How cool is it that this is the Utes' (Redskins) program but the front cover has a huge CU player stomping all over them! Also in the schedule it says that the Utah band will form the "Block U" but then shortly after will form the "C" in tribute to Colorado. Much different times in regards to sportsmanship.

Oh and CU won that game 20-14 and went on to a 6-2-2 season. Highlited by a 21-21 tie of the #4 Sooners and a 61-0 stomping of CSU!!!

    This program is entertaining!!!

Notice in the statistics. It has stats for "Forward Passing". As opposed to...???

And the TV ad, "huge screen" and "picture realism". I'm sure it was too at the time.

Before he got to CU, Jack Swigert played football for East High School in Denver. Class of 1949.
He was inducted in the East High Alumni Heritage Hall in 2008.

I love how the heaviest guy on our squad back then was 225. Hell, Jack Swigert was a Guard and was 6' and 185 lbs. Awesome.

Oops, I meant 230. reading comprehension....

He served on a House of Rep. committee, but you're correct: never took office.

Was my personal favorite movie of all time for at least 2 or 3 years during my pre-teen and young teen years.

Another one is Gary Knafelc from Pueblo Central. Played in the pros ten years and Knafelc is the only player to ever be carried off the City Stadium or Lambeau Field turf by fans.

He served as public address announcer for Packers game at Lambeau from 1964 until 2004.
