Embree's staff is conspicuously "Colorado to the core": Five new assistants either played or coached under McCartney, including both coordinators, Eric Bieniemy (an All-American running back on the 1990 national title team, later a CU assistant alongside Embree in 2001-02) and Greg Brown (CU secondary coach from 1991-93). Two other staffers, Steve Marshall and Jashon Sykes, were part of the program under Gary Barnett. Even Embree's sons, Taylor and Connor, are both playing for former Colorado coaches at UCLA and UNLV, respectively. If they got any more Colorado, they'd have to hire Eric Cartman to do the play-by-play. (Who has the official endorsement of Dr. Saturday for the job, by the way.)

Although not a seasoned group, position coach J.D. Brookhart believes his tight end corps can mesh nicely in CU's new pro-style offense, which will be rooted in a hard-nosed running game.
[IMG] Kiszla: CU's Jon Embree mixes humility with pride - The Denver Post
Football tradition at Colorado is not dead, but the true challenge for Embree is reinflating chests with pride. What irks the new coach is the idea that the 1990 national championship was some kind of fluke. The people of Colorado are humble to a fault. "I think we've kept our success and a tradition a secret. I don't think we talk about it enough. How many schools have a Heisman Trophy winner and a national title?" Embree said. "We should thump our chests about what this university has accomplished, from Rhodes Scholars to the engineering program and the business school.

Embree and his staff are very good recruiters, and they have the new fertile ground in California. They've got to protect the best players in Colorado and get a few special players from, say, Texas, and they can have a very good team in three or four seasons. Don't expect much, if anything, this season. The previous coach once complained he inherited a scorched-earth situation. He certainly left this program worse off than he found it. There is serious rebuilding to do, and Embree has never been a head coach, so he'll need some growth time of his own.

When 6-foot-8, 320-pound senior guard Ryan Miller was asked several weeks ago for his impressions of freshman Stephane Nembot, Miller smiled and simply said, "Whoa." "He's a freak. He's huge and I'm happy he's on our team," Miller said.
Nembot also checks in at 6-foot-8. He weighs 280 pounds and will be listed at defensive end to start training camp. He hopes to make it his permanent home after a high school career in which he played various positions in all three phases of the game, including handling kickoff duties.

    64. In The Buff Colorado stuns Michigan in the Big House Sept. 24, 1994: The day Kordell Stewart and Michael Westbrook hit the mute button on more than 100,000 fans in the Big House. With Colorado trailing Michigan 26-21, Stewart dropped back, rolled right and threw a missile more than 70 yards in the air as time expired. Receiver Blake Anderson tipped the pass out of the hands of Wolverines defensive back Chuck Winters, and Westbrook leaped to grab the deflection before landing in the end zone. The play was designed for Westbrook to do the tipping instead of the catching, but none of the Buffaloes quibbled with the result.

Despite all their off-the-field problems, the Buckeyes are still very much a legitimate threat to win the league title this season, but they'll need someone to take over for Terrelle Pryor and lead that offense down the field. Will Luke Fickell go with the known quantity in Bauserman, who's unlikely to hurt the team with big mistakes? Or will he be tempted to roll the dice with the youngster Miller, who showed in the spring game that he can make plays when nothing is there? Can't wait to find out.
