Its been that 18 months in which HCMM promised to change the bodies of players. Time for some results on the field, besides the huge reduction in injuries.

Recognizing what "Furd did with their approach (becoming the most physical team in the PAC 12) under Turley and his top assistant, Forman, who is now in Boulder working his own deal with the Buffs, I'm looking forward to see how those efforts translate onto the field.

Could be a breakout for the OL! And continuing improvement for the DL. No more tubs of goo, running a full step behind game speed, I hope.

And McCartney at 245? Who da thunk it?

This fluff piece again? S&C just isn't a difference maker in college anymore. Not with so many HS kids in top-tier off season programs like Matt McChesney's these days. Not saying you don't need S&C just saying you can't expect them to turn chicken s**t into chicken salad.

Disagree it is not a big difference maker, but agree that there is only so much molding to be done. I cannot believe people still use terms like football speed.

Guess those starter/games lost to injury numbers are just make-believe, eh? And Stanford's physicality is just a mirage?

Buy a dog; name him "Clue".........

How do you not use football speed? How would you explain Keyshawn, Brian Cox, Zach Thomas, etc?

Wes Welker begs to differ with you that the right trainer can't improve performance and longevity

if i was a highly sought after.QB from Louisiana it would have been spot on. and my girlfriend wasn't as tall as Uma Thurman.

Truly an overlooked role by Robert Downey Jr.

Just say the guy does not possess good speed. In the case of Keyshawn, WRs that big with that body control do not grow on trees. Guys with Cox's size (yikes) and his attitude do not grow on trees. I cannot explain Zach Thomas at all. My main point is I have listened to Buffs fans talk about "football speed" for the last decade as just some generic term that means very little.

Totally understand where you are coming from in terms of the Buffs. It's been thrown around way too much. However, I believe there is "football speed". And it goes both ways. There are players that play faster than their 40 time would indicate, and players that play slower.

That's why I pay so much attention to shuttle times. You've got to be able to stop/start/change directions in this game. Much more important than how fast you can run in a straight line.

S&C is such and individual pursuit I just don't see how a couple trainers leading 105+ guys who (should) all have different training goals and motivation levels will make much of a difference. I guess it can harm your program but it's not going to help it to the level suggested by these articles.

One thing you are ignoring in your arguement is that Stanford has been recruiting 4 and 5 star guys on their line for the last several years. Talent has a lot to do with it.

Sure, but it's also not like the emphasis started when they got talent, it's been emphasized since day 1 of Harbaugh

I was going to let this go, but I can't.

We are on completely opposite opinions with this one. The technology to measure and test athletes for so many things and customize nutrition and workout regimens in response to those results, modified by what the coaches and players want to achieve for a particular position and player... makes the S&C program more important than it has ever been. There is such a huge opportunity to be more sophisticated and effective than ever before and to achieve significant competitive advantage on that with higher performance levels and reduced injuries.

Agreed. Here's a little story about Catapult. Ridiculously sophisticated.

I knew someone would bring that up! And no, I didn't ignore it, but was waiting for your astute comment.

You are correct for the past few years, but Harbaugh didn't start with 4 & 5* recruits, but still managed to raise the physicality of his early teams, using Turley's unique approaches to that field, as Tini noted, from the beginning..

Contrary to Schubeal's assertion, as Nik has pointed out, the new and well-designed S&C programs are, in fact, derived from individual measurements and goals developed when a kid first arrives on campus.

Schubeal's view that S&C is a couple of guys/trainers walking around spotting and yelling encouragement, is so old school as to be pre-historic and laughable. Forman spends tons of time with each player in each player group, teaching exercises specific to that group and for each player individually.

Guess Tini was right with his weight gain estimates.
